- In this video Beckett's Blacksmithing builds an authentic wood fired Estonian Sauna. This was a pandemic project that we started in early spring and completed in the fall of 2020. My family members were all involved in the project and I show the build from start to finish.

At Beckett’s Blacksmithing I specialize in hand forged products and custom decorative ironwork. I use traditional tools and methods and heat my steel in a coal fired forge. In addition to this, I use modern tools such as welders, power tools, and gas torches to bring this ancient trade into the modern era.

Hi Beau. Great video. I'm about to start a build and use your sauna as a template. Did you use pressure treated wood to frame it and under the cedar floors for the base. Thanks!
Hi Jonas. Sorry for the late reply. For the floor structure I used pressure treated then for the floor boards I used 2x6 cedar. The wall and roof framing was all regular SPF lumber. The siding was standard barn board. The roof was sheathed with 3/4 plywood. The interior was all done with tongue and groove 3/4 inch thick cedar. I hope this helps.

What was your cost?
The stove I made from a regular small woodstove that I got for free. I modified it so I could put flashing up against it to seal it to the wall, then I built a cage on top for the rocks.

Sorry for the late reply. The sauna platform was 12X8 and this included the little 4 foot porch on the front. The inside measures about 7.5 X 7.5 feet.

Thanks! Stay warm. We will occasionally see -35C here in southern Ontario, Canada. Hard to keep the sauna warm when its that cold.
@@beaubeckett6045 So this is Canada?! I did not know. I have long dreamed of moving to Canada, but Covid happened. Then the war... Now I'm completely at a loss what to do. The dream seems unattainable.
Beautiful job! I was wondering, is that 2 inch wood stripping over plywood on the exterior? It looks nice and would be a far more affordable way of finishing the exterior (I am about to build my own sauna. Cheers from the Yukon!
The exterior wall is not plywood. I used barn board and did a 2 inch batten over the cracks. When I priced it out it was about the same as using plywood. Pricing may be different today and different in your area.
@@beaubeckett6045 Hi Beau, thank you so much for replying to my comment. I started reading your replies to other questions and ended up answering my own question lol. Regardless you did a great job and your info on the specs were very helpful. Going forward I plan on using the same board length dimensions. The only difference will be that I will substitute the 3 foot porch for a change room. Thanks again!

Hi, it looks wonderfull. i have a question about furnace.
How you insulated the furnace from the walls in place of instalation (in the wall) to prevent a fire?
Hello Marek. The chimney goes up inside the sauna and through the roof. It goes through the roof with a double walled stainless steel chimney. Inside the sauna where the single walled chimney is closest to the wall I have put a 32 inch wide piece of cement board all the way up up the wall to the roof. Behind this cement board there is a 4.5 inch air gap with no wood or insulation. So for the section of wall directly above the wood stove there is no insulation.

Great video. Do you have a video or pictures of the ( I guess you call it ) the inside part of the stove and how you put it any. Sauna rocks ? I have a wood stove insert , and that would be hell lot cheaper than buying a sauna stove. Thanks so much
Hi Roger. I took some pictures of the wood stove from the inside that I can send you. If you send me your email address I can email them to you. This stared out as a regular woodstove that I modified for the sauna. Definitely a cheaper way to go.

Hi there! Great job and inspiration for me! I wish to ask you, is there any insulation used at the floor level? Thanks for answer!
Hello. Only the walls and the celling have insulation. There is no insulation under the floor. The floor is made from 2x6 cedar pushed together with no gap. (there are tiny gaps in some places) This allows the floor to drain if water gets spilled but isn't drafty. This seems to work pretty good, even in the dead of winter.

Hello. I don't have any real plans for it. I mostly just figured it out as I went. I can give you a few dimensions though. The base platform is 10 feet long and 8 feet wide. It is made up of seven 2X8X10' boards with two 2X8X8' boards on the ends. I didn't have to cut any of these boards. This was then covered with 2X6X8' boards to make the platform. I built it this size so I could just buy the wood with no cutting or waste. From there up I just framed it in with 2X4s. The outside dimension of the room is 8' wide by 7' deep which left a little 3 foot wide porch at the front. The walls were framed 7 feet tall and the peak on the inside is 8'6". If you don't want a porch, an 8' square platform would be a good size sauna. I hope this helps.
inside sauna have to be warm. In the feet also. Why you don't have any isolation from the bottom ?
I didn't put any insulation on the floor because I didn't want animals ripping it out and living in it. The floor boards are 1.5" thick and seem to hold the heat well enough. When we use the sauna in the winter we don't have any trouble getting it up to heat and the floor is warm.
A sauna I once participated in building had the floorboards spaced ~1cm apart to get fresh airflow from beneath and also to drain the water. That sauna still works perfectly even in the coldest winter days. Insulating the floor is completely unnecessary.

@@tanyasluckinski7088 This is a regular wood stove that I reworked for the sauna. I connect the stove to the wall with sheet metal and there is a 6 inch gap between stove and where it goes through the wall. On the wall there is cement board with an air gap behind the cement board.

What stove did you use??
I used an old scrap wood stove that I adapted so that I could feed it from outside but the main body of the wood stove was in the sauna. It was free and I made it work.
What is the floor made of?
The floor is made of 2X6 Cedar deck boards with no gap. There is only one layer and the floor in not insulated. I wanted any water that was spilled in the sauna to easily drain.
How did you deal with drainage?
We don't generally wash inside the sauna so there is never a lot of water in there. The floor is not tongue and groove so any water on the floor just drains through the cracks. Haven't had any problems yet.
How you get out of thatwhen you are all sweaty and warm and its cold outside?
by opening the door.
now for real, going from hot to cold is also a part of sauna, the shock. Some jump in a pool, other throw a bucket of water on head, in winter some run outside.
first time with cold water on you will be like hell, after a few times you get used.
if do sauna right, you body temp will be high enough to compensate.But if jump in a pool dont stay more than 20s or else you will lose to much of the body heat.
It feels great to come outside to cool off after being in the sauna. Even in the winter and in the snow. We usually sit on the step out front for a bit , then head back into the sauna or head into the house.
How hot does it get in there? I’ve been in electric heater saunas but never a wood fired one.
Hello, Sorry for the late reply. We can get it quite hot with the wood. We have had it up to 95C before but we find this a bit hot. I'm sure I could go hotter if I tried. It takes about 2 hours to get to 90C and this is even in the winter. The thing with the wood heat is that it is a bit harder to control. I am getting used to how much wood to put on the fire to get it to a certain heat and how much more to put on once it gets to heat to maintain it. It takes a bit of practice.
@@beaubeckett6045 I appreciate your honesty. I have 3 Woodstoves (not sauna) and they take time to control. Lots of factors such as moisture content of wood, species of wood, outdoor temps etc. Enjoyed your video. Thanks.
Great video, thank you! Curious if you insulated the flooring at all? If not, did you use treated wood?
For the floor I used 2X6 cedar and I did not insulate the floor. I didn't want animals living in there so I left it open. We use it in the winter and the floor is still nice and warm and I can still get it up to heat with no issues.

What stove is that?
This is an old wood stove that I converted for the sauna. I put a flange around it to seal it up against the wall and I built a rack on the top for stones. It was a free stove that was headed for the dump.
Hello. Before you attached aluminium/foil sheeting on insulation, is it also necessary to put vapour barrier? Your thoughts. Thx mate.
Hello. sorry for the late reply. I did not put any vapor barrier behind the foil. The foil acts as a vapor barrier. Also with a sauna regularly reaching temperatures close to 100C I'm not sure how a plastic vapor barrier would hold up over time.
