A sequel to this film would likely be very unnecessary but I’d still want to see it

The reason Why I want a sequel is because we need to explore the rest of the characters, such as Julieta, Pepa, Agustin, Felix, Dolores, and Camilo. Also, kind of like Inside out, nearing the end of the movie there was a button that said puberty. For Encanto, it isn't as blatant as it was for Inside out, but I feel like Dolores and Mariano having a relationship was kind of foreshadowing what would come in a sequel.
But, I kinda disagree with the video as a series just makes alot more sense. I just mentioned 6 Characters that had 0 development in the first film, so it just logically makes sense for me if they spread it all into an animated series instead.

_Encanto_ really feels like it was tailor made for a TV series, and I mean that in the best possible way.
The movie itself told a complete and satisfying story that doesn’t really need continuing in a feature length sequel, but the setting and the characters are all so engaging and fun that I ended the movie instantly wanting more.

No, it isn't in my personal opinion that the movie told a complete and satisfying story. I think the concept in general was better fit for a TV series from the start. Too many characters to jam-pack under a 1h45min runtime leading to underutilisation...grandma was forgiven way too freaking easily...etc. etc.

@@oddity7263 Honestly I agree, I always felt like Luisa and Isabella's arcs were also rushed and we didn't get to see much of them prior to their songs

@@JustSdn I still have lingering bones to pick with this movie...while I should go light on it because it targets an audience below my age group, the area where things are more shallow, I can't dismiss what I see as genuine miss opportunity. I don't personally think it portrays abusive family dynamics...or generational trauma in THAT realistic of a way. The most glaring issue is that these types of problems, especially seemingly more than 2 decade-long problems, cannot be resolved in 1h and 45min, or well going by the movie's timeline...3 days. And I must be the only one who finds Mirabel often bratty, insensitive and annoying unless the writers need her to tone it down for the forced and rushed character development lol.
Overall, none of the character development truly felt...whole. And I say the only characters the movie truly focuses on is grandma, Mirabel, Bruno, Isabela (and Luisa).
Luisa is well, I'm not even sure if she gets much character development. She gets a song where she vents her stuff to Mirabel and Mirabel and her have like a 2-sentenced heart-to-heart where she accepts that she's been working too hard...and that's it. Later on when grandma catches Mirabel coming out of Bruno's room, Luisa runs up the stairs and cries about how worthless she is without her strength....so character development reversed? Then at the end of the movie when everything is sunshine and rainbows, she seemingly goes back to being relaxed...wow...really wish we could see more of that...but 1h 45min runtime.
Isabela went from this terrified girl (who is still a snob to her sister) who is willing to go to any cost and length to please her grandma to FULLY redeemed free and wild girl in one 3-minute song. No, actually, she was still terrified when the grandma stepped in later. But then at the end of the movie, she goes back to being free, as though there weren't any lingering fear of her grandma still there.
      And speaking of grandma:
That's right, she constantly dismisses her family's emotional needs, and is the very cause of Casita breaking. Let's not mention the disturbing fact that she disowned Bruno, her own son, and banished his name because he couldn't please her misguided narcissism. Regardless of her intentions, she did not prioritise her family and what they wanted. And that he turned out to be living in the walls for 10, awful lonely years. Sure to drive anyone insane. But so far, I do dislike her, but she was a realistic character. I was actually going to say I liked her character, until of course how it was treated at the end. Now I have to admit, I love Dos Oruguitas, the song and the animated sequence. But once again, it's like whipping up a last-minute tragic backstory to make us feel sorry for the antagonist. I agree grandma isn't "evil", and isn't irredeemable, but she didn't actually do much to redeem herself, or make that redemption earned. It's a couple of apologies that really feel like token ones. I really dislike how in the ending song, she said a "I'm sorry I held on too tight, just (because) so afraid I'd lose you too." Stop making excuses for yourself, you know you're in the wrong, and that's not how you convince others to be on your side. Oh wait...that's exactly how she convinced others to be on her side, because everyone went along with it immediately after and harboured no feelings of anger or negative emotion towards her.
Bruno...man he was treated the worst. First of all, his sisters or otherwise other family members of his who acted awful to him were quickly forgiven or if not, their actions were not addressed at all. Pepa, who treated her own brother's name like it had Tutankhamun's curse, was pretty dang happy to see him when he showed up at the end.... why? And BRUNO was the one apologising to them! Why?? He's the centrepiece of this movie's conflict and also the scapegoat. Everyone should be apologising to him. He apologised for ruining Pepa's wedding. His powers were and are only prophetic. He can't change the future, he can only see it. Likely or even definitely, he said something that was unlucky and terrible and Pepa was the one who ruined her own wedding. Compare that to holding a 10-year-long (probably more) grudge against your own brother, treating him like a bad omen, choosing grandma over him, and that it lead to him spending 10 years in solitary confinement. True, Pepa grew up under grandma, but she was now a full-grown adult, and there was no excuse or justification for how she treated Bruno.
And Mirabel had an uh... "I need to find my worth" arc I guess...but outside of Waiting on a Miracle we don't get a lot of moments out of her that show her self-doubt or self-esteem issues. So while I know it's there, it feels like it was dropped for half the movie then showed up again and was completed at the end.
...Yo what about the other characters? The husbands? Pepa's kids? No problemo at all? And what about all the unanswered worldbuilding questions? Who really was Pedro? Why is it that only the Madrigals are magical? Does the Colombian government know about the Encanto's existence? Heck, how much do the Madrigals or the people of the Encanto know about the outside world?
So I doubt this was the writers' intent, but you know...I don't think we should be teaching kids to apologise for petty things that weren't even our faults, or to forgive abusers and long-time abuse when they haven't earned a fraction of your forgiveness.
eh...if you read to the end...a tiny apology for the long rant.
Movie was flawed. Nonetheless, I do still want to see a TV series made on it, if they do make one.

@@oddity7263I feel like you truly missed the entire point of mirabels character if you think she’s “bratty”. She had to live in the nursery for 10 years when everyone else got their own room she was constantly overlooked or looked down on. She didn’t even feel like a part of the family. I wouldnt say she’s insensitive either moreso ignorant. According to her the family are perfect with no problems and she feels she doesn’t fit that. When she actually understands what’s going on she has a lot of empathy and is incredibly supportive. One of the movies themes is perspective and we see how mirabels perspective as well as almas are challenged. Also mirabel is 15 so there’s that too. She’s probably the most emotionally intelligent character in the film though.

I think a Disney+ miniseries would be a more fitting follow up to the movie. It would have the same art style as the movie and consist of 8-10 22 minute episode that would tie up loose ends from the film such as Deloris’s romance and Abuela atoning for causing the family’s trauma. It would also give much needed spotlight to characters that had minor roles in the film like Chamilo and Mirabel’s mom.

Encanto more lends itself to a tv series.
    1. There's so many characters that wouldn't really be able to have a full movie of development and closure
    2. Of the characters, they all have their burdens and have a lesson to learn and it would be good to show those lessons (like how adventure time and stephen universe had some really deep episodes where characters dealt with grief, anger, loss, etc, but you weren't babied with the idea)
    3. There was no villain in the movie and can't really be one for a second movie. The antagonism would have to come from the house or the village unless the whole movie is about someone leaving the village, but then what makes it encanto?
    4. Kids would each have their favorite character that they want to see more of and a movie wouldn't give that character justice because...well, there's a lot of main cast.
But having a tv series where each person has to learn more about their gift's abilities (ie, think outside the box) and then slowly lose their gift's potency so they have to learn how to deal with things without superpowers and band together as a community _would_ be a good tv show. The gift isn't dying, but there's so many people who got powers that they only get a little power, or the house senses they rely on it overly much so and so is "trying to teach them a lesson" but goes too far.

I’d really rather have a cartoon adaptation like with Tangled. And I do hope Disney takes its time with something like this because I love the first movie so much. A series would give us more time with the characters over smaller intervals, so we’d hopefully get better chances to explore the Madrigal family and learn more about the community.
Completely unrelated, a funny thing I came across on another platform was someone INSISTING that a franchise is ONLY a series of movies. Nevermind that we call things like Pokémon, My Little Pony, and Spongebob franchises. Because while they have movies, that’s not the MAIN focus of these properties.

I think the sequel will be about the village having to face the outside world again. Maybe it'll be like "The Village" where they are behind in technology because they were surrounded by magical mountains for decades. Mirabel led the family to a new era and split the mountains, now she has to lead her family into the modern era. Or maybe re-face the threat her grandparents ran away from in the first place. I felt thats why the ending was ambiguous, to flesh out better in the sequel.

    • @josephivenegas
      @josephivenegas 11 місяців тому

Pretty sure that was the original plan for the movie to begin with! Instead of exploring for a solution WITHIN the family home, Mirabel was meant to explore the OUTER world (presumably with the same goal of addressing some hidden trauma from the family's past)! Even the song at the end has a line about "letting the walls fall down". Exploring the rest of Colombia - to find long lost relatives, perhaps? - is a pretty organic next step to take.
That said, releasing a collection of fun shorts on Disney+ first is a good idea!

I think it would be fantastic if Encanto had a spin-off series. Each character would get to shine and explore their true potential along with their power. This would also be great from a marketing perspective. Disney could make tons of merchandise of the rooms we didn’t get to see in the movie.
If Disney could make the catastrophe of Oye Primos, they can absolutely make a spin-off of Encanto.

A slice of life series would be great for encanto. Like following every family members, interaction to between different family members and so on.
Like maybe an episode about Isabelle having her own garden just to see a little animal that eats her plants. You know the classic gardener vs annoying animal. And at the end we find out that it was just Camilo which end with him becoming the scarecrow.
Another episode about Pepa having a day off for herself. But her way of relaxing is doing dangerous things. Connecting her back to her original power and her being a daredevil.
Lastly. Some episodes with Alma looking through a photo album and the kids asks about one specific photo for the episode and we follow the story of the photo until it gets taken.
Maybe episodes about Bruno's rat dramas.
There's a lot that can be done.

I would love both a sequel and a tv series for Encanto.
For a sequel, you mentioned maybe following up on a character that did not get a tone of time in the original but still have Mirabel be there and I (personally) think that cousin Camilo fits into that slot perfectly. He is a cousin, literally the same age as Mirabel, just a few months older. And while the dude got barely anytime in the film, he still stands out as a crowd favorite. Also, something to note is that we do not see him use his Gift again after the the Miracle is restored and I think there was a storyline for him that ended up being cut for time, which they could take inspiration from.
As for a series, I would love one similar to the Tangled series that shows the younger Madrigals adventures and exploring outside the Encanto.
Another thing can could work for both a sequel and a series, but might fit better as a series, is the Madrigals, especially the younger generation, forming connections outside of the family. Like, obviously they will still be close, but besides Mariano and kind of those three kids, we barely saw the family interact will the townspeople.
    Just some thoughts.

I don't think sequel to Encanto will solve Disney's problem but it probably will make Encanto a victim to Disney's problem and that problem is *Complacency*
Disney has been too complacent with it taking little risks in its creative ability and relying too much on the idea of sequels and it feels like they're using that as an easy way out of having to come up with new ideas.
A sequel is good if it merges well with the first movie, but if all conflicts and storyline factors have been said, done and resolved in the first movie then there's nothing left to work with in a sequel which will drag down the storytelling quality of the original.
With Tangled, it worked well with the movie short of Rapunzel and Eugene's wedding and the Tangled series in between which showed Rapunzel's life with her family and adventures before the wedding.
It told a story within the story that gave everything a satisfying conclusion without any plot holes.
While a sequel to Encanto does sound interesting, I don't think that would be a good idea.
The story of Encanto more or less wrapped up all the possible plot holes in one movie and little to no unresolved twists unless they make a strange plot twist like Abuela's husband secretly survived which would make no sense since Abuela herself tragically saw him die.
Maybe, yeah a time skip to where Mirabel is chosen to be the future matriarch after Abuela but this would drag it on not in the best way.
I don't have anything against Disney wanting to make sequels when it's suitable for the story but they can't keep relying on making sequels especially to productions that don't need sequels which will jeopardize that production.
I don't know why Disney is so afraid of taking risks and trying new imaginitve ideas, and when they do take risks, they don't put enough effort into that risk and just set it up to fail.
There's also the fact that Disney tries too hard to prove a point in something like it has to include a certain factor to a work so hard that you can see it from space but not in a good way. It's more an in-your-face way that doesn't make anyone comfortable and comes off as an indirect insult.
The Disney now is trying to create an impossible flawless image of itself that doesn't exist.
The Disney back then accepted wins and losses as they are and took them as lessons which made the next ideas instant wins as they learned from their mistake and combined those lessons with new ideas to know what to do and what not to do.
This Disney now is trying to act like there's no flaw at all which is first mistake thinking that there shouldn't be a mistake to have to learn from, and the moment they find a mistake in their work then they'll scrap that idea saying that it didn't meet a desired standard, which is actually a nonexistent standard that they just came up with a few seconds ago.
I'm sorry if I'm rambling, but I think Disney really needs to sit down and rediscover what made Disney, Disney because they audience knows who Disney really is and is capable of but Disney itself needs to reawaken who it really is otherwise it'll just drag itself down.

What about the (political) enemies that burned down the former home of Abuela and Pedro and probably killed him? I personally think that the plot of the follow up would be much like frozen 2: give a cause to the magics appearance. [Spoilers] Frozen 2 was like "yeah your parents united two kingdoms, sort of, and were nice to the enemy despite having every right to be upset, so thats why there's your magic. Btw, there are more magic sources in the world than main characters", and it would make perfectly sense that the magic abilities given to the family Madrigal is a counterpart of another group with powers, thats going to be threatening to the people. Now that the mountain that separated the two locations literally split in half they could interact again - or attack. (If thats already a theory, sorry I didn't know that. It just crossed my mind how obvious that plot would be, considering wish also worked with a balance power, frozen 2 introduced 4,5 of them, Moana had the good power herself turn into bad and so on. See a theme here?)

Idea for an encanto follow up:
Abuela handing her responsibilities over to mirrabel. The next generation’s kid (probably dolores’) life leading up to gift ceremony and how mirabel while trying to not make the mistakes abuela did, makes different mistakes that add too much/different pressure onto the kid. The movie would be the journey on how family loves you and stuff and would show how mirrabel would apologise and take accountability for her actions.
You could shine light on how chamil is a tad bit overlooked and now as an adult still hasn’t really found himself and that’s ok. Antonio could be an important character and have some wise uncle words.

They were bringing some of the refugees they found in hiding back to the Encanto when they were attacked and Abuela was killed, probably defending Mirabel.
This would create a new trauma for the family to heal from, raise the question of should they continue to stay in the valley or try to help others in their country, and show Mirabel having to grow into her new role as the family matriarch and source of the magic, all while preparing for the gift ceremony of Dolores and Mariano's first child.

If they do end up expanding on the franchise, I think they should try something a little more concise like focusing on the dynamic between Mirabel and her sisters. "Encanto" had a lot of interesting characters, but since Mirabel had to be the main focus in the film, it was hard to get a real sense of their relationships as a whole. With Isabella I kind of get, she was raised with high expectation while Mirabel was shunted to the side, but I couldn't see much in terms of a sibling dynamic with Luisa.

I think Zootopia shorts are the way to go, at least to test the waters. Parallel with the movie, just flesh out the other characters, hint at something else and see how much of an audience there is for it.
Because unless you do a decades-long time skip where Antonio or new family members are the stars, not sure where the story would go exactly. Stories need conflict and while there's probably some lingering trauma, I don't see much of it left in the Encanto. While I can see the other recent Disney films having sequel potential within the confines of what they established, Encanto was a story about a family and their trauma. And that seems to be pretty healed.

Or, here me out, take the money for making a movie, and make an animated show out of it!
One of the things that made Encanto so popular where the characters. And a movie simply DOES NOT have the proper time to breath to delve into all the characters properly! People want to see more of the characters, of the family struggle to grow together again, over an in-universe longer period of time! A show can give us that. Don't cram that stuff into a movie and let interesting side characters fall off the line becouse there is no time to delve into them! (Looking at you, Maleficent 2!)

I'd go with Dolores and Mariano's wedding for the overall plot where the stakes come from. With the emotional focus being Abuela trying to change but not being perfect(and the rest of the family adjusting obvi) I think planning wedding makes for obvious temptation to fall back into being controlling while also being a wonderful opportunity to put her family's emotional needs first. This would also allow us to focus on Dolores and her siblings and parents more than in the first film. Plus it was well established that Bruno messed up Peppa's wedding so there would be some intriguing tension there. And this would be kind of extra but Mariano being fleshed out beyond nice man that wants to marry a Madrigal.

There’s so many characters and a series focused on slice of life and smaller plot makes it easier to focus on those characters and their dynamic. There’s so much to explore with Dolores and Mariano, bruno being back in the town and his relationship with those people, alma unlearning her ways and being open to change, luisa and isabela bonding because we never see that! there’s so much potential I feel like a sequel would ruin what was the best part of encanto being the characters and their relationships.

I think it would be good but there is always that fair especially with sequels sometimes not being as good as the original, since Disney is falling into a bit of a dark age again, the fear I have with the sequels coming out is that what if the story isn't good, because what if people spend all this money to go and see a sequel to one of their favourite movies like frozen or Encanto and it's just really not good, that would be truly disappointing and if Disney is in a slump era with movies like wish, then what does that mean for movies like frozen? That's my concern at the moment, it would be good to see a new film, as long as there's a good story and good songs that actually have a purpose and flesh out the characters, as well as tell an engaging story, not just something to make money.

I don't think there would be a TV show for Encanto. At least, I don't see one. The Tangled one made sense because they had the movie, the short showing Rapunzel's wedding to Eugene and the show filled in the in-between. Rapunzel adjusting to getting to know her parents, why it took her as long as Eugene claimed for her to agree to marry him, etc. Even the short was made because of a comment Eugene made at the end of the movie about him and Rapunzel getting married. The only way I can see a show happening is maybe a prequel series, show Mirabel growing up as a kid with no powers or maybe how her mother, aunt and uncle grew up. (I'd honestly find the latter more entertaining and I know a bunch of people who draw fanart of the triplets as kids and young adults would agree.)
As for a sequel movie, I've heard a few thoughts on this. One thought I've heard is that a sequel would have the characters explore outside of the village and into further civilization. Another I've heard is introducing a new generation. Maybe Mirabel's Abuela is gone and now she's the one running the house with her sisters and maybe even herself having spouses and kids of their own that end up in their own mischief. Maybe it's just the start before a new generation and it's Delores getting married. There are places they can go with it. Heck, there could even be some overlap of the two.
It isn't necessary, but I'd watch it just to see where they go with it. I think it would be interesting.

I mean dolores and Mariano end up dating by the end? there was a cut epilogue of mirabel getting her own room. Or they could just have it be slice of life. The tangled series introduced new characters and world building they can absolutely do that for encanto. They can also explore a lot of dynamics we didnt get to see in the movie. There’s 13 madrigals and only 90 mins in the movie. I feel a series would have more creative freedom too. It could be set post movie but have some episodes that are flashbacks to triplets childhood or grandkids when young or even very recently before the movie. They could do that

If they do a sequel - which I want sooo badly- this should be the plot:
Three years after the events of the first film, Mirabel, now 18, is closer to her family than ever before and even has her own fantastical door and bedroom generously provided to her by the rest of the family. Despite this, she still can’t help but wonder why she was denied a magical gift thirteen years prior. One night, Mirabel wishes on a shooting star for her answers, and ends up being called by the magic of her ancestors to the place where it originated and where Pedro grew up - and the magic of the whole Encanto starts to falter thanks to the rift between its people and those from the outskirts of the Encanto that was started by the attack that forced Alma and Pedro out of their original homes many years ago. Mirabel, Isabela, and Luisa must travel to the land of their ancestors to uncover the reason behind Mirabel’s lack of a power and save the Encanto.

I don’t mean that in the disrespectful way, but it feels like the movie itself hinted to a larger plot instead of self-contained family drama that being what caused them to need the Miracle in the first place, I would love to see the sequel dive into That somehow maybe introduce some really cool, big villain, although I know the history behind the big migration from Venezuela to Colombia so it might be too dark for a Disney movie but it would still be cool to see

I know i only really started to like him the moment i felt he had depth and meaning. At first, just a crazy guy in the walls, but then you see that it's all to cope, that delores has to know of his existance within the house but just keep her mouth shut until mirabel asks, and that he's very human.
Kind of like catra in shera for netflix. At first, she's just a cat person, which gets people interested in her. But then she becomes very human in her struggles and that makes people really latch onto her story.
