Hi Carz Plus, I am from Gilbert, AZ and have a 1929 1-1/2 ton work truck. I have been wanting to dismount and mount new tubes and tires for many years. I have been looking for a video with similar content to what you have now provided. Your video is exactly what was needed. In the next two weeks I will give it ago! Thank you for your presentation and instruction! -Cush

You can also use the rim jack to expand the rims in order to lock the split in place. Normally the rim jack is used both to compress the rim for removal of the tire and then used to expand the rim for the installation of the tire.

Yes, you're correct. We found it more practical to use a porta power to pop the rim back in place. Thanks!

I am amazed you did it by yourself! Excellent video! I did just one with 3 other guys- talk about work!! You make it look easy. I have a ‘28 Pierce-Arrow series 81. 6.00 x 20 inch tires.

We always put the tire on first, then lift the upper of the tire and tucked the tube in starting with the valve stem! And yeah, it's a lot faster! But thank you for the reminder! You still have to make sure and position the tube!

    Good video, a few notes.
DON'T USE YOUR FINGERS!!! That rim is a pinch point and it will absolutely wreck your day if it snaps on your fingers. Instead, use rubber/plastic mallets, screwdriver handles, anything that doesn't have sharp edges and is preferably plastic, wood or rubber.
When initially seating in the tube into the tire, bounce the tire against the ground all the way around a few times to help it "settle" into the tire and remove any wrinkles that can't be seen inside the tube.
When using the spoons to wrap the tire, only pull one side of the tire onto the rim at the time. Similar to how modern tires aren't peeled all at once, do it the same. Work one side of the tire onto the rim all around, then seat the other.
When using the spoons to wrap the tire, be very careful not to pinch the tube with them.
You can get 4' and 5' long tire spoons from commercial truck tool suppliers. They tend to have thicker ends, but the extra length makes peeling and wrapping tires significantly easier.
Overall, good video and appreciate the uncommon topic and rim type.

Nice video. I have a 1928 Whippet and have replaced all the tires. That same tool you used to collapse the rim can expand it back in place by reversing the crank direction. I don't think you needed the hydraulic pump. Also I had heavy rubbers that go over the tube to protect it from the metal rim. I didn't see them in your video.

Nice video. I like to shake the tube in a plastic bag with talc rather than put talc in the tire. Also, you can set the tire under the sun for a while to soften it.

I have put a lot of tubes in bicycle tire and have to watch those metal tools so they don’t pinch the tubes and create a hole. Great video as I am about to change the tires on my 1928/Durant Star. Not as hearty of a tire though.

Dishwashing detergent works a lot better than WD-40 and is more benign to the rubber.

I'm about to install 4 tires, tubes and flaps on my 18 in. wooden spoke split rims for my 1930 Hudson. I'm curious why you didn't install a flap? It would seem to me that that would eliminate any pinching of the tube while installing, as well as when expanding the rim back into place.

The quality of the interior rim didn't seem to require it with these rims. It probably wouldn't hurt to take the extra precaution. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for the video, even before Ive found this video I've tried doing the same on my 20 inch 1928 Plymouth ...Ive used porta power 10 t , I also used the original tool I don't know what exactly happened but I ve managed to bent the rim and I can't get the two half to meet up...I don't have a spare what do i do now ? any ideas would be greatly appreciated .

See if Stockton Wheel (Stockton, CA) can fix it. It sounds as if you might have over-bent it thereby deforming it. We've never sent them a split rim, but have had amazing luck with everything else we've sent them. Good question! Thanks.

Tube should have been placed around the rim 100% first then tire worked onto rim. Pinching the tube against tire iron and tire.

Thanks for the idea, it sounds like it might be worth trying. There's more than one way to skin a cat. While that didn't quite work for us, we'll give it a shot again next time.
