The level of ability here is completely off the charts. One guy is a comic who could easily have had a career as a pro guitarist and the other guy is in the top 5 or 10 guitarists of all time. And yet, when you watched this, it was all “Aw shucks!” No big deal. Incredible.
Campbell was good, but not in the top ten of all time. No better than James Burton, or Danny Gatton. Campbell was a first call player, good enough to have made a living as a session player if his career hadn't have taken off, people make a bid deal over his playing now, because he's mostly known as a singer.

Quite often a 'pro' ends up in one career when the other was their true desire. Back in the day when actual talent ruled, people were usually more than a one trick pony if they had any staying power.
Also an extremely accomplished painter. He studied visual art before going into show biz. At least one of Steve Martin's banjo records features one of Mull's paintings as the cover art.
Jesus. To be a pretty good guitarist and singer and not utterly freak out singing and playing with Glenn Campbell! Beautifully done. MM liked my dog Connor and petted him.
Martin Mull on "Mary Hartman", "Fernwood Tonight", & "America Tonight" was comedy gold. Loved Tommy Tedesco in The Mirth Makers band. You'll never see TV like this again in your life.
Same here. My sister and I caught him first on Mary Hartman. Then Fernwood 2Night. He and Fred Williard did a skit in heavy Scottish brogue, "Fern, say hi to Herb. Herb meet Fern". We cracked up every time. Being a take off of late night hosting shows at one point the band conductor was " Happy Kine" and always wore headphones. (Real name was Frank DeVol, an excellent band leader in his own time doing skits at the end of his career). Some producer should've seen the brilliance of that pair and given them their own TV show similar to Rowan & Martins Laugh-In. Somehow it wasn't meant to be and they parted ways.
Saw Martin Mull in a tiny showroom back it the 70's. He called the show "Martin Mull & His Fabulous Furniture". Just him sitting in an old wing back chair with a side table to hold his drink. Two hours of the funniest shit I've ever seen. He is a real treasure.
Hawkes is one of those remarkable guys who’s played with everyone, or so it seems. I saw him backing Flo and Eddie around 2015 and with Todd Rundgren after their New Cars project.
I always knew Glenn Campbell was great but Martin Mull just blew me away. I thought he was just a comedian. You could’ve had a hell of a career as a singer and guitar player. Just fantastic!!!
I’ve seen Martin Mull hold his own - actually, more than hold his own - with artists such as B.B. King and now Glen Campbell. Plus, one of the most iconic comedic talents ever.
I've Loved Martin Mull since Mary hartman.. one of the funniest and most underrated comic performers ever. As a musician, I'll bet you money Martin managed to get a lesson off Glenn. You don't squander an opportunity like that.
He's overrated these days. He was good enough to be a first call session player when he was young, but there are lots of first call guitar players who aren't household names. People make a bf deal over his guitar playing, but he was no better than James Burton or Danny Gatton.
I remember seeing this when it first aired. Martin Mull was a funny, funny man, but he was also a multi-instrumentalist. He often sang on his comedy albums. And of course, Glen was one of the most in-demand session guitarists in the business before hitting it big in the late '60s with a ton of hit records. They will both be missed.
Ya'll probably know this already but Glen stood in for a spell for Brian Wilson in the 60's and was a member of the Wrecking Crew. The man had chops. Mull not bad but he ain't no Glen.
I knew Martin played a little. Dang ! That was out standing. And of course Mr. Glen Campbell, one of the best pickers that ever lived. The Lord doesn’t make them like that anymore. R.I.P. gentleman.
Wholesome country music. We had it so nice. Mull and Campbell are in good form. Glen was quite the lead player, really nice country riffs, and Martin was no slouch either. Rest in peace Martin.
I saw Martin Mull live with a friend of mine way back in 1975. My friend sent me this clip and expressed the ongoing shock we feel when we realize so many of the entertainers we grew up with are in their 70s & 80s! But that’s OK. I’ll be there too in 10-15 years anyway.
I know what you are saying about mortality. I saw Mull in 1974 opening for Robert Klein. He was a ‘no name’ at the time, but boy he immediately won the audience over. I was so happy he made it in the business. He deserved it.
@@lindak1768 it was a comedy performance. He had a big band and a little person. Spent 15 minutes promising he would play a song from his album “just like on the album. Hilarious agony.

I saw Martin Mull in Tucson around 1979 and saw him perform this song in his one-man stage act sitting in a comfy chair and old lamp to his side. Always hysterically funny. One of many great performers from northern Ohio, now drained of brains, seemingly. I left in 1978. Best decision I ever made.
Martin was a funny, funny guy. Lines/titles from his albums included; 'How can I miss you if you won't go away', 'How could I have ever missed a girl of your size', 'The blacks are giving me the blues'. etc. Or listen to 'Ukulele Blues'.
Mull did solo stand-up at Emory University sometime in the early 70's. I believe he was connected with someone who taught there. I had never before and never since laughed so hard and so long that I hurt. I don't remember what I was laughing at but I've never experienced that since. I also remember one brief song snippet he did, making fun of the pain of the wealthy--a blues number--something like, "I woke up this morning, both my cars were gone...I was so upset I threw my drink across the lawn." Sorry to hear he has passed away.
That was very nice. Martin Mull is not in Glen Campbell's league but he made it fun. Glen Campbell is a super talent that make everybody around him look good. Thanks for posting this one.
Great comment. It seems that Mull settled in to this number after a verse or two, when Glen’s superb fills began to carry the song. Freed Martin up to focus on his vocal and rhythm playing.
