- Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro Via the Machame Route, I climbed with the Tanzanian company Zara Tours. Zara handled all of the logistics of my trip. First off they picked me up from the airport and drove me to the Springlands Hotel in Moshi, which they operate. Zara provided my meals while at the hotel. They got me to the mountain. Their guide got me to the summit. They got me back to Moshi and finally back to the airport. Our group on the mountain included me as the tourist, Nechi as the Guide as well as a cook, a waiter, and a porter.
Day 0 - TRAVEL DAY - I flew into Kilimanjaro International Airport from Kenya and was transferred to the Springlands Hotel in Moshi where I stayed the night.
Day 1 - TREKKING - We were driven about an hour to Machame Gate (5997 ft). Our gear was organized among the porters. We had to pass our gear through a metal detector, which was a pain. We hiked about 7 miles through the primary rainforest to Machame Camp (9948 ft).
Day 2 - TREKKING - On the trail early hiked through the Moorland up a ridge to to the Shira plateau and Shira Cave Camp (12,303 ft). Today's hike is a slow one. That afternoon in Camp Moody my waiter took me on a short acclimatization hike.
Day 3 - TREKKING - This morning we hiked about 4 hours into the semi-desert vegetation zone to Lava Tower Camp (15,092 ft) for lunch. After lunch, we dropped 2,000 ft to Baranco Camp (12,795 ft).
Day 4 - TREKKING - Another early start to beat the traffic on the Barranco Wall. The wall took us about 1.5 hours then we continued to traverse Kibo to Karanga Camp (13,255) for lunch. After lunch, we would hike to Barafu Camp (15,358 ft) gaining 2,000 ft.
Day 5 - SUMMIT DAY - I was awoken at 11:00 pm and we left camp a little after midnight. The trail to Stella Point (18,871 ft) is steep and grueling. But don't think you are done here! The trail traverses the crater rim to the highest point in Africa, the roof of Africa Uhuru Peak (19,341 ft). From here we cruised back to Barafu Camp in about 2 hours. After a rest and some food, we hiked another 3 hours down to Mweka Camp (10,170 ft). I was done and wanted to leave the mountain so we continued to Mweka Gate (5,380 ft) and got a ride back to the Springlands Hotel in Moshi.
Day 6 - REST DAY - Since I got off the mountain a day early I spent the day resting. But had I stayed in Mweka camp it would have been a 3-hour hike to Mweka Gate.
Day 7 - TRAVEL DAY - I hung around the hotel until 3 pm when I was transferred to the Airport for my flight home.

congratulations, man -- the climb looked awesome. nice to scratch one off the bucket list. i enjoy your videos.
Thanks, I appreciate it!
This sounds like I’m listening to NPR
how much did you spend from nairobi airport starting with
i have been offered for 4k from london , flights, climb, 2 days safary . is it expensive?
Though I am not a travel agent and don't know what the itinerary looks like, that sounds reasonable to me.
what vaccinations you had before going to africa
You should visit your doctor at least a month prior to your trip as they will give you the best advice. However for myself, I was up-to-date on all routine vaccinations including COVID-19, and I was prescribed malaria pills plus was vaccinated for yellow fever.
Yellow fever vaccine is required to enter Tanzania?I am leaving for JRO from LAX on12/22/22. Please help. Thank you
Yes, it was required. It is a great adventure, have a great time!
