You know that moment when you’re putting groceries in the back hatch and the door comes down and hits you on top of the head? That’s a pretty good sign you need to change your lift supports. This particular vehicle has two sets. One set on the glass, here … and one set on the hatch itself, here.
As always, before doing any work, check the manufacturer’s specs for your vehicle, and if you’re not completely comfortable changing them out yourself, we’d be happy to recommend a professional technician in your area. But if you are, here’s what you’ll do:
• Prop your hatch open securely or have someone hold it up while you work to keep tension off the supports. Use your flathead screwdriver to pry the clips loose at both ends of the support… Be careful, and wear eye protection-these clips are under tension and can pop out quickly and unexpectedly.
• This should allow you to slip the ball out of its socket at both ends… Once you’ve detached the support at both ends, compare it with your replacement to make sure they’re identical.
• Snap the ball on one end into the socket, making sure the clip is secure… then do the same thing on the other end. After securing the support on the first side, repeat this process on the other side.
• Once both supports are replaced, close your hatch, then open it again to make sure they’re both secure and functioning properly.
• And, if you just need to replace the supports for your back window, that process is similar to replacing the supports for your hatch.
And that’s it. - Авто та транспорт

Thank you for this video. I am 70 years old and replaced the lifts on our 2011 4runner in under 5 minutes. It was easier to install the new one top first then the bottom one. And yes , as you pointed out wear eye protection because the clips you loosen with the small flat head screw driver went flying off of both tops of the old lifts. Thank you again for graciously sharing your knowledge. We propped up the back lift gate with an eight foot open step ladder - was very secure for us.
Your store was the only one who was able to get the parts. I picked them up today and installed in less than 10 minutes. Thanks!!
Thank you so much. I just installed mines in less than 10 minutes. 😁
Great video, straight to point. Thx!
Awesome, thank you for posting this. Super easy.
You for got to include the fact that sometimes a shock may need to be positioned. Of the Stabilus pair I got, the right one was a cinch but the left one did not position with the ball socket on the liftgate. I was able to turn it clockwise by hand and install it. Hope that helps someone.
Thanks! Put a little bit of lithium grease on each mounting ball? (I use an old toothbrush for such).
This saved me $$. I got tired of a broom stick holding my trunk door. $40 from the body shop store and good to go.
Thank you
My santa fe has 2 powered struts and the lift gate won't open. Not sure how to test these or if i should buy both ??
Are you interested in installing other model's tailgate?
One day my lift gate struts were working fine on my 2004 Santa Fe, and the next day they would not lift? Is there a fix for the struts other than replacing? What makes them fail?
Is it possible to install longer lift gate struts on a 2012 Rogue? Since I am a tall person, I always hit my head on the door when it is open, with the factory installed ones.
sweet
is that ok to fix only one shock instead of both ,
You could, but it's best to do both. I just replaced hatch struts on my 2009 Scion XD. The pair cost me $18. That said, I do work for an auto parts store, so I get a bit of a discount, but full prices generally for a pair are $50 at the most.
If one is bad, you can bet the other is not far behind.
Aren't you supposed to put the clips back on?
I just installed mine, and the clips are already attached and you just pop them on.
@@bryanschrock5414 Thank you Bryan.....I had the same question....watched the video and saw they were already on and just popped on as a whole, but still was unsure ....Happy New Year!!! It will so nice not to have lift gate fall on my head in the cold weather!! Thanks to OReilly too!!! You both are so appreciated!!
@@insilence6156Haha. You're right. The weather here just dropped into the low 20's and my glass window won't stay up at all. If spring was here I might not need to replace them. They worked 'ok' when it was warmer.
The new ones usually already have the clips in place.
Can this be repaired at home?
Yes, easily. Did it in literally 6 mins. I used a pick instead of a screwdriver.
Yes. In most cases, a flat-head screwdriver and something/someone to hold the rear hatch open are all you need. Or, if you have a small enough car, could use one hand to hold the hatch open and the other to pop off the old ones and apply the new ones, as I was able to do. For me and my car, the process took about 5 minutes.
Why is James Corden fixing cars now?
Thank you
