  • **Sorry about the quality of the video - This is my first ever attempt and will know better next time. I hope it is still useful to people**
    How to mod a G29 for a handbrake by tapping into the printed circuit board on the wheel and running wires through the neck and out the front of the base.
    Also repairing the design flaw of the G29 where Logitech has the flimsiest wires from the wiring harness to an 8 pin connector which then connects to the PCB on the wheel. These tiny wires then twist every time the wheel rotates, causing them to wear and snap from the inside. *this info was prominent on the Logitech forums until they changed them so that you can no longer find anything!**
    TO MAKE MY DIY HANDBRAKE (as seen at the end of the video)
    **Sorry I didn't take pics/video of this process but the idea of a guide didn't occur to me until after it was finished (& I'm not about to pull it apart)**
    Tools and supplies needed:
    *Measuring ruler/tape
    *A vice, hammer and angle grinder (to bend, shape and cut the metal bracket).
    *Drill (for mounting the switch onto the bracket, the bracket to your handbrake - to your frame/cockpit).
    *Small gauge wire long enough to reach from the wires protruding from your G29 to where your handbrake will be mounted.
    *Soldering iron with solder plus heatshrink and wire cutters/strippers.
    *This handbrake (basically the cheapest available from China): www.ebay.com.au...
    * Metal sheeting from your local hardware - thin enough for you to bash into right angles with a hammer in the vice.
    *A momentary switch that takes 2 wires (a button that will activate when it is pressed in and will then turn off automatically when it is released) - just ask at your local electronic parts store (I didn't buy mine online and thus have no link).
    *Black spray can to make your metal bracket pretty (I also painted my red switch button black). I used auto acrylic gloss as it dries quickly and adheres fairly well to a scuffed, clean surface.
    *Various Nuts and bolts to mount eveything (I used stainless steel M6 threads but whatever works).
    *A male and female connector that take 2 wires (if you want to ever be able to detach the handbrake from your G29)
    Basic instructions
    1. Get Your handbrake 1st - no point gathering the other parts until you can see the approx sizes you'll need - then collect the other parts.
    2. Approximately fit the h/brake into position and measure/mark where you will need to drill your mounting holes from the h/b to your cockpit.
    3.Take your switch to the h/b and fit by eye below the handle so you can see where the button must be mounted when you fully pull the handle of the h/b down.
    4.With your basic idea, take your sheet metal to the h/b to visualise the approx shape that you will need it bent and cut to in order to mount your button.
    5. Now get to work at your vice with the metal and hammer, grinder until you have the right shape and cut down as you need until you are happy with it. - Keep fitting by eye until you're sure that you could mount the button onto it (don't drill any mounting holes for the button or bolts until you're confident it will work).
    6. After you've finished with the bracket, mount it with the button on it and confirm that it works as intended, then dismantle it and paint parts as desired (I'm sure you can figure out the painting on your own).
    7. Solder your 2 wires to the switch (one onto each point on the switch). Now you can confirm that your switch is okay by connecting the other ends of your wires to the ones out the front of your G29. Then fire up a game and test in the button config. options.
    8. After you're sure it works, mount the male and female connectors to the wires from both the G29 and your handbrake (will likely involve soldering the connectors for durability).
    10. Re-assemble, mount and use.

    Also just another heads up: When you 'test' you will plug the power into the wheel and the G29 will perform its start-up sequence each time (the wheel will rotate...). Just be ready so the pcb/wheel doesn't get tangled.

  • @hjhooch3355
    @hjhooch3355  8 років тому +2

    Just an addit:
    Make sure that your wires that will be fed through the G29 from the wheel are extra long as you will be feeding them through and testing it while the wheel is detached from the base - You will need the extra length to play with.

    Nice work. Just done one myself using the same hb assembly as yourself, though mine is to a G920. I always searched for G920, didn't even cross my mind to search G29 or I would have seen this earlier. Did it differently in that I went off the PCB and the B button, (circle on G29).

    After doing this mod again for my Brother - without the frequent interruptions that I had the first time - I now have several refinements:
    1. When removing the neck (which has the paddle shifters attached to it) you only have to remove the 3 larger inside screws (not all 7) which secure the unit to the base. Removing the other four screws allows the paddle shifters to come off which is unnecessary.
    2. Do not apply the hot glue fix for the 8 pin connector until you have already re-assembled both the base cover and the neck, as it can be almost impossible to squeeze the hot glued, bulkier connector through the neck hole during re-assembly (I had to heat the glue back up with my solder to soften and re-shape it and then ended up pretty much re-doing the whole thing to tidy it back up after re-assembling the neck).
    3. When removing the screws from underneath the base, you only have to do the ones around the outside to be able to detach the base cover (there were about 6 of them).
    4. Be sure to solder the PCB of the wheel before you thread the wires through the base and also be sure to thread the wires through all of the:- neck - base cover (through its entry hole) - base - Otherwise you will end up doing what I did and have to cut the wire out of the base in order to be able to re-assemble and then solder the wires back together (major pain in the arse).
    Otherwise I'm relatively happy with the guide here and I was able to do it in approx 45 minutes the second time (without rushing anything), even after having to do unnecessary soldering and re-hot gluing.
    No hiccups/malfunctions in the operations of both mine & my Brothers' G29s. All worked 100% as intended straight away.
    Good luck people.

    Just a heads up to anyone trying to do this mod.. do NOT use this video as a guide. It does NOT work. The solder points he used are for the menu button.. the paddle solder point are on the opposite side of the pcb, which also only work for pc. Anyone doing this for xbox one needs to use either x,y,a or b. Hope this helps someone out

    I know this video was posted a while ago, but did this end up working? You never posted an update vid. Im currently in the process of doing this mod, but the solder points you used seem to be for the start or select button. Ive seen another video of the handbrake being wired to the right or left paddle and they used 2 of the 3 solder points on the opposite side of the pcb. Please let me know, ive spent roughly a total of 12 hours in the past 4 days trying to figure out where to actually solder but there are so many videos that say to solder at different points. Thanks!

      Hi Mike. Just came across this video. I have done exactly what you are asking, made mine for my G920 tapping off of the B button. Risky, but I was not going to do it for any other button. As you know, the 920 only has the paddles LB and RB, so if I used them then no paddle shift, and LSB/RSB which are the stick buttons, and no game maps handbrake to those buttons. So it was B or bust! I have the g920 and want to mod for the handbrake. I was going to solder it the the R2/L2 but after looking at comments on this video, it seems that you can't map out your buttons on the Assetto corsa game console version for Xbox one. when I play forza 4 or forza 6 the ebrake button is A for the Xbox 360 and for Xbox one on forza, which means that would be the X button for the Ps3/Ps4. you have any idea what solder points is for the X button/A button for the g29/g920? I know peppedik have a picture of it hooked up to the O button. can I get that picture?

    • @samuelvong90
      @samuelvong90 7 років тому

      I just looked up the configuration for the Assetto corsa xbox one and it's the B button for the ebrake so it would be the O button for the g29. what are the solder points for the O button?

    • @hjhooch3355
      @hjhooch3355  8 років тому

      I'm positive it will work for a G920. Iv'e seen a dismantling of one and it is 95% identical to the G29. The L/R buttons (triggers on XBOX) are in the same place on the PCB and and can be tapped into the exact same way. Good luck

    • @JustJamieHDG
      @JustJamieHDG 8 років тому

      Quick question is it the L/R Buttons i am soldering? i was just curious i thought it would be B or Circle Due to that button being the handbrake

    • @hjhooch3355
      @hjhooch3355  8 років тому +1

      The reason for L or R buttons is because you would have to really mess up badly to damage anything. The circle, square, triangle, x buttons don't have a direct solder point. Peppedik did it and had to tap into the printed circuit through a tiny port on the board (I don't feel confident in my ability to do that).

    Assetto corsa doesn't have button mapping so this is no good... surely the wire has to run down through the servo base? If you could somehow find it elsewhere it would be a lot easier than this

    • @hjhooch3355
      @hjhooch3355  7 років тому

      The wire does run down through the servo base (did you actually watch/read it all?). It has to if you want to maintain PS4 compatability.
      amstudio has figured out how to tap into O or X button (time index in his video: three mins 13 secs) ua-cam.com/video/zuyuqYL9Fe4/v-deo.html
      This tutorial still applies for all other aspects (amstudio does not go into those details). Good luck

    • @nonoantonio98
      @nonoantonio98 7 років тому

      HJ Hooch no sorry I didn't watch til the end... I'll be able to find it but I thought I'd google it first. It wouldn't bother me but Assetto is the only game I have that doesn't have some sort of button mapping (I'm on xb1) thanks for the help

    • @hjhooch3355
      @hjhooch3355  7 років тому

      Yeah, I didn't buy the game on console for that reason (it's ridiculous that there is no mapping). The G920 & G29 are the exact same wheel - just less buttons on the G920. You will just have to use abrasive paper to expose the circuit on the PCB for X or O (B or A on XBox). Just take your time and be careful, then follow this guide for all other elements (amstudio also has a dismantling video which is helpful)

    • @hjhooch3355

      Any small gauge copper wire is fine. If you could get one that has two seperate wires inside it - even better as the two will need to be threaded through the small whole through the neck of the base (about 5mm diameter).

    Helloo i have the g29, i can use the circle button to do this?

    • @hjhooch3355
      @hjhooch3355  8 років тому

      As per the video - It would be very risky as you would have to tap into a printed circuit on the board. That's why I chose the L/R 2 & 3 buttons. Almost no risk of damage as the solder points are already there for you to tap into (I really wanted to use the circle button also but it wasn't worth risking damage to the board). Just re-assign the buttons in any game's control configuration options.

Have a go on your own and take it step by step following my video and additional notes here. The reason I put this video up is that It I honestly think that anyone could do it with a guide like this (I had no experience at all with soldering and still managed fine). Just look up a soldering tutorial and buy yourself a cheap solder (mine cost $20 from J-Car), wire strippers/cutters (you could just use a sharp knife & scissors) and a hair dryer or cigarette lighter will substitute for a heat gun for heat shrink (ask about the heatshrink and connectors in J Car) Good luck.
