And no, this started long before 2014. It has been Putin’s goal all along to take over Ukraine. If you follow his speeches and interviews, you know this. Countries in Eastern Europe are fully aware of the threat Putin poses to their countries. This is why they tried so hard to join NATO. NATO did not seek out their membership. If you’re not a Russian troll, then you’re probably just an uninformed American who bought into Russian propaganda. If you want the truth, try speaking to people from Latvia, Estonia, Finland, Poland, etc. Russia is not a good neighbor. They are clearly the aggressor and have been planning this for a very long time.
Sean Penn is Really focused. He had a specific purpose and he has held great restraint in moving toward that purpose to help the Ukraine.

The US and EU want full control of Ukraine. We all know why. Russia only agreed to give up Ukraine in the first place if they remained neutral and demilitarized. Having Nato/US/EU in Ukraine controlling Ukraine with a super advanced and Heavy Military would be a devastating blow to Russia.

I don't understand why Sean Penn is so worried. The war is going on in the eastern regions of Ukraine., there live mostly Russians or empathize with them. Similarly, Kiev and the cities around it, like Bucha, are populated mainly by those who support Russia. So Ukrainians almost don't die, only Russians.

There were many points that Penn brought up that I agree with...sovereign nations...God...and Chicago. This is a wonderful American heart felt interview. Sean Penn is focused and cares about the Ukrainian People. Prayers to Ukraine. And I pray NATO will stop this terrible war.
Being objective, if NATO were to involve themselves, this minor conflict would escalate into a war that would result in considerable losses for NATO countries.
A) Nato has a combined total of about 3.5M ground forces. That sounds like a significant amount until you consider the facts. During the war in Iraq, the coalition had between 100-200K soldiers in country trying to secure a state that's roughly the same size as New York. Russia is roughly 40x the size of Iraq. Also, just to be clear, much of Iraq was not patrolled or controlled by ground forces.
The point being, unless the Russians supported NATO removing Putin, we would simply repeat the mistakes of Iraq and Afghanistan.
B) The Russian Navy is formidable and they do have a blue water navy.
C) It is plausible that NATO actions could force China to support Russia out of fear of a western power taking control.
NATO can stop the war only by not involving itself in it any more and letting the two sides negotiate a peace. NATO's invitation of Ukraine to join their military pact had started the whole conflict.
I love these comments more than this professional discussion. Both the left and the right can agree that we are not in a good place and if we don’t sit down NOW and try to put our differences and disagreements aside, and try to figure out the appropriate direction for this country, we are riding a ticking time bomb.

I am not a big Sean Penn guy but I admire that he sat down and spoke in an articulate way. Setting all politics aside he related what he saw what he experienced while he was in the Ukraine. He made it his business to get real information not embellishing or censoring what is going on there. Passionate in his beliefs and actions. And I really appreciate his honesty about what he believe is our responsiblity to help end the conflict. Bravo we need more of these non.partisan exchanges without arguing politics.
