Hack - mapping a 4 way joystick game to an 8 way joystick

- If you have ever wanted a quick video on a trick/hack for mapping a 4 way joystick game to an 8 way joystick, this is for you! I have found that this makes for a much better playing experience on these 4 way games! Enjoy!!!

What about when you have to go up or down, you still have to be exact with those movements right?
You leave straight up and straight down alone.
This is brilliant! Now I can get rid of the 4/8 way joysticks with the limited travel and go back to my wonderful suzo-happ 8 ways. Thank you!

Just did this trick again. Also mapped P2 deck controls to player one so on two player you don't have to share a stick. Thanks

I wonder if there's a way to make this a mapping for all 4 way games without having to map for every game?
Possibly but I don’t think that’s how Mame works. It’s either map the one machine or map globally. It’s unfortunate. However, there’s only a few four-way games that I play so I haven’t had a problem mapping those few games and it doesn’t take long to map them.
@@dantron69k same here, I tried making my cabinet easy enough to use for new people. I was thinking of making some sort of switch to change the 4-8-way gate under the control panel, but I'll just compile a favourites list and do this for 4 way games.
Does it still feel off while playing? Or is it pretty playable with this setting?
@@massir7769 it’s way more playable then trying to use an eight way. It’s still not as good as a four way, but really close. Try it on a game like Pacman first and see what you think.

if you want to change a 8 way into a 4 way, look at its base. It has a gaurd you can slot into place

Sadly this doesn’t work with donkey Kong, Mario still gets stuck on the spot when you push up right or up left
You could probably swap and map left and right alone with the three up and down being all up and down. I don’t have this problem you’re describing.
@@dantron69k tried that combos also but still didn’t work properly, it’s still ok if i push bang on left, right up and down, but if i accidentally push one of the diagonals it just makes Mario stand on the spot, the rom still recognises diagonal up and being “up”
@@garycormack that’s weird because that game ROM is only four directional inputs not six so diagonal jumping is not something that was in the original donkey Kong. It was jump and press one direction that’s how you move while jumping so I’m not quite sure I understand. I hope you can figure it out because I don’t have that issue with my iPAC.
