Fieldsports Britain - sabs on a pheasant shoot

  • Two sabs armed with whips and chemical sprays stopped a shoot where we were filming. They had been looking for a hunt to disrupt, but they heard shooting so followed the sound. It only takes two to stop the 20-50 people out shooting from having their day. So what do you do about it if it happens to you? Step forward former Metropolitan police detective Ian Jensen and BASC’s Gareth Dockerty, who explain your rights, and how you can get the police to help.
That’s not all. Geoff Garrod is having a soggy day on the squirrels, Deborah Hadfield goes in search of game meat and finds it is a restaurant delicacy, and James Head gives his view on the age-old airgunning question, .22 or .177?
We are giving away a peg on a 200-bird day on 3 November 2023 priced at £1,100, thanks to Gwysaney Sporting, David is on the news stump, and James Marchington has the best hunting videos on UA-cam in Hunting UA-cam. It’s all in this week’s #FieldsportsBritain

If sabs invade a shoot, first elect a spokesperson to make the first engagement, ask the sabs who they are and what they are doing on the land. Elect another shoot member to film the proceedings, do not engage with the sabs but film their faces and without being deemed as aggressive as close as is necessary to keep the camera in focus. That and very little else. Walk away and call the police and inform the police as per the video. In the meantime, every member of the shoot party departs from the scene and if possible, eat sandwiches, drink coffee but do not drink alcohol, chat away to each other but totally ignore the sabs. It goes without saying, put the dogs away or take them to a safe place as well as any weapons. If anyone is carrying a knife, put it in a vehicle and lock it.
Repeat….do not engage with the sabs …. Ignore them….they do not like it….they are attention seekers, being ignored will irritate them.
Enjoy your sandwiches and chat for as long as you like. If they trespass into your space, ignore them, turn your back on them. Do not under any circumstances give them the pleasure of seeing you are displeased by their presence. Any of the shooting party begins to get frustrated, take him/her to a vehicle and drive him/her away but do tell the shoot captain you are leaving but DO NOT SAY WHY. The sabs will not know what is happening and will be confused.
Repeat….do not engage but simply blank them out.
If they attempt to make conversation, blank them, walk away….calmly.
Inform the beaters and pickers up by radio to STOP, collect into a group and await further instructions.
If it is midway through a shoot and time for lunch, tell everyone and carry on about your business as normal but above all else continue to ignore the sabs…..blank them out constantly.
If the police arrive, let them do the talking, tell them the sabs are trespassing and their actions are likely to cause a breach of the police and if there are children present advise the police officers the children were distressed by the situation created by the presence of the sabs, especially if they are wearing those silly masks or have their face covered.
Ask the police to talk to the elected shoot person in private out of earshot of the sabs and if they insist on talking to the group, insist the discussion be out of earshot from the sabs……..again, this total exclusion irritates the hell out of sabs.
Far better the sabs make the first aggressive move on film without any prompting. Remember your right to a shotgun is at risk, stay calm and remain the status of being a fit person to hold a certificate.

It`s a strange world we live in if the best advice we can come up with, is to just ignore these two clowns, stop shooting, pack up your guns, and go home. It will be the easiest win they`ve ever had.
I`m curious to know if this same advice would be given in other scenarios ??
If these same guys decided they don`t like football, and stand on the pitch on a Saturday afternoon. Would the 40,000 paying spectators be told to ignore them, quietly leave the stadium, and go home?
Or they stand on a runway because they don`t like people flying. Would everyone be told " sorry, but these two clowns don`t want you to go on holiday, so could you all just leave the airport, and go home please"
Hey, maybe they could stand on the Chief Constable`s driveway and stop him leaving home. I`m sure the Chief Constable would be fine with that, and just ignore them.
It`s just a guess, but I have a feeling they would be cuffed, dragged off, and charged within minutes. Maybe i`m wrong.

Stopping shoot days is different from fox hunts as there is a financial loss element.
They can be taken to court for the financial loss individually or as an organisation.
Luckily here in Scotland it's actually illegal for them to interfere with a shoot under land access law so not just a civil offence.

Someone on my property with a mask on and being threatening or refusing to leave would be likely to meet very small objects going very fast in their direction.... but then I don't live in the UK.....so the police are, largely, not on the side of the thugs.
There is NO way these creeps should be allowed to disrupt lawful activity. It would serve the ratbags right if some of them got injured.
It seems in the UK you have to allow them to succeed. That is WRONG.

    • @davidsmith663
      @davidsmith663 8 місяців тому

The police are actively on the side of the criminals in the UK. You call about someone breaking into your house while you are in it and they don't have anyone available. If you call about people trying to break into your garage, they have no one available. But if you say you're going to get the gun out and hang up (even though you have no guns and are 80 years old) two armed response teams will show up, fully kitted out, guns drawn and screaming at you to come out with your hands up. All that while your son in law chases the crooks in his car giving a running commentary to the 999 operator. I have reported poachers many times, with loaded guns driving around the roads and shooting on private land. They refuse to come out. This is in a so called safe country where you supposedly have a right to defend your home.

    • @danny1ft1
      @danny1ft1 8 місяців тому

Two different countries, I can think of plenty of reasons to hunt in America and Canada and some of Europe but Britain has no place or reason for hunting it's just a blood sport over here so the majority of people don't support it especially when it comes to hounds fox hunting, it's just cruelty for the sake of fun so we outlawed it, without Sabs trespassing, if you can call it that, they'd continue to illegally hunt, in Britain no land is private from public access when it's countryside, most countryside owned or not has to have walk ways to pass through the land, so trespassing in most these cases isn't happening.

Most unfortunate. Britain on a whole is a small country in comparison to Europe or North America. SABS seem to be having a upper hand and unfortunately seem to be gaining ground . Thinking about this and the response of land owners... " what are you planning?"..
"What" deterrents are you looking at ? ( blocking their access to and exit from your properties)??
( this will cause them financial difficulties I'm sure )
Hit them.. in their.. pocket book. That particular individual may think again about the cost of inconvenience, fines and court time for harassment and trespassing. You must start working on "their " level.
As a outdoor enthusiast... and.. wildlife control officer I am most concerned with this matter.

The shoot or landowner should instruct his guests or clients to put their guns away and to call the police, who and in the experience of many, may well take several hours to turn out? Is that a serious response?.…. is this not EXACTLY what those who are breaking the Law by committing aggravated trespass hope to achieve? Are they not acting with a sense of total omnipotence and with the certain knowledge that they will walk away, scot-free and once they've achieved their end goal?
A day's shooting may well have cost the client/host well in excess of £10,000. Will we soon be approaching the time when shoot owners feel compelled to employ private security operatives who will themselves be trained and licensed?
The idea that landowners or those in authority need to exercise caution when ejecting trespassers from their land who are acting outside of the Law, really does make a nonsense of logic and reason.

We have had many dealings with sabs on our shoot, we help get their names and real faces. We had the so called Manchesters notorious 🤣 notts and many more. But what cowards trying to beat old men up who were in their 70’s, they came in force pushing everyone around and trying to attack dogs, and the police were useless, so we had no choice but to use reasonable force to get these thugs to the ground, many were arrested on the scene for assault and aggravated trespass, but later released because our rubbish rural crimes said they couldn’t be identified? Although they were arrested and taken to the police station, our rural crimes needs educating, we gave them video footage at the end of the season, they brought it back to us in April and said, “let us know when you finish shooting” 🤔 it finished in February 🤔 just wow, let’s hope other shoots get a educated rural crimes.
The sabs start by stalking while you’re out feeding or dogging birds back, they watch your every move just like they did with me, I am the main one to go dogging in so I had to start taking a friend because the police was not bothered and you feel vulnerable especially when your in secluded woodlands. The sabs tried taking my dogs from the back of my vehicle, and my kennels, but again the police did nothing. We have both gathered a lot of car number plates and faces, these sabs start by stalking but stand out like a sore thumb because you can just see they don’t dress proper for the countryside and look total chavs and out of place. We confronted many sab teams and they are very uneducated and refuse to be educated, the reason the countryside is so beautiful and full of wildlife is because of the management but they would rather see it flooded in vermin. They think they can walk where they want and get aggressive and violent when confronted, even to women, and I am a woman who will stand my ground and stand for what I love and believe, my life for the past 20 odd years has been all for helping run a shoot, working and training my dogs, and encouraging others into the way of life, I was a townie from Manchester but I’d never go back to a town, I educated myself and never looked back. So why can’t others be like me, they would be surprised at how much a better life it is rather than thrive off ruining others.

Some private prosecutions are warranted, or at least private investigations then presented to police/CPS for a charging decision, would be a good tool. There are specialist firms of solicitors who can do this work and BASC has the money to fund it. Key will always be the identity of the sabs in question but where, as here, they’re stupid enough to leave their faces visible they can be persuade. Alternatively, an injunction preventing further incursion can be sought. If breached they can be hauled off to jail in criminal contempt of court. Such injunctions can even apply to persons of unknown identity and are potentially very powerful. What I don’t understand is why nobody has the appetite for this!

Not long after joining the local climbing club we where on our way to town as it was very bad weather, we passed a fox hunt in the valley about 2 to 3 hundred yards away. The first car stopped I had never seen a hunt before. First someone shouted leave the fox alone next we where all shouting, it was great fun annoying people . I can see how it has developed into a sport in its own right.

If there is a genuine human demand to eat these birds then they can be bred like chickens and killed as humanely as possible, as with chickens, then that can continue. But shooting parties aren’t about eating these birds so that’s why I believe it should stop.

Be honest, I don’t particularly like big game hunting but I understand that the most endangered species in Africa are only kept alive due to this type of hunting, it’s the Chinese that supply the demand for the dead animals, pheasants and partridge are bred specifically for shooting! Grouse are not they are managed within their ecosystem , your argument has so many holes on so many levels tbh, we as humans breed animals to be killed to feed the population ! @@dominicjohnson8427 I am not veggie or vegan and as mentioned I have no problem with hunting as long as takes are sustainable within the natural wild population. My issue is with breeding and artificially increasing bird numbers solely to be shot, particularly using driving techniques to flush targets over static guns. In addition, the breeders and keepers manically and very often illegally suppress other wildlife which might compete for food sources or predate on the game birds. I know there is an economic impact on rural populations but our government is very quick to abandon other employment areas when it suits them. While I recognise there may be localised severe impacts on individuals I have no objection to investment in alternative livelihoods that will have wider benefit to society as a whole. I am also supportive of raising animals for food as we do with cattle, pigs and poultry where killing is undertaken in relatively (to blasting with a shotgun, often almost randomly what I’ve seen) humane conditions. If people want to eat pheasants then kill them as we do chickens.

Have to agree with some comments below - this response is an easy win for the sabs - the hunters are not aggressive enough. You have a right to remove people from your property if they're trespassing (step 1), can people film you on private land without your permission ??, if not do you have a right to try and stop them ?? Can you seek to at least try to identify sabs wearing masks because you want to proceed with a civil prosecution for trespass or loss of earnings. Could a lawyer bring a case for loss of earnings ? Can you effect the jobs of these people ?
