Best movie of the year hands down! I was so waiting on y’all to review this! It’s so beautiful. I haven’t had a film affect me on a level like this in a while. I literally called my dad and hugged my mom and told them how much I loved them. Only cinema of this caliber can do that.
Oh it hit me hard too, I still cry thinking about it. It deserved all the Oscar's. The leads were perfect and the use of Under Pressure was avant garde.
Most underrated film review channel on the web. Every video is cake. The icing, for me, is whenever Christy hydrates by taking a long sip off a Kirkland Signature Sparkling Water (usually Lime). I share the love.
I saw this back in early October and it affected me in a deeply profound way. I was eagerly awaiting to hear what you guys thought about the film! For my money, you two are the best film critics in the biz. So happy you got to see and review this!
Instantly my movie of the year, 2022. Delicate, Definitive, Devastating, Mr. Mescal and Ms. Corio beyond praise. Ms. Wells needs to make more films. Thank you, Christy and Alonso. Beautiful.
I would love this movie to be recognized during the awards season but honestly I don’t care too much either way cause I’m just so glad someone made this movie and now it’s forever in the world
I think that's the intention of the film. It's trying to feel like a very boring family holiday, having grew up going to resorts like this I could feel it.
Thank you for the review! This is my favorite movie of the year so far. It’s a mesmerizing kaleidoscope of child Sophie's viewpoint, Calum's viewpoint and Adult Sophie's viewpoint. When I watched it for the second time, wow... everything felt so much clear and poignant but also beautiful in this thank-you letter to a father.
It's been a while since I've had to work to understand a movie like this one. I went into this movie very carefully. Based on what I've heard it was going for and the response, I knew it was going to be special. I was crying at scenes I didn't know what for. Very profound experience
It's a beautiful movie. Performances are understated yet so riveting. I think it's about time the academy paid attention to performances like this. not everything has to be hammy or baity to be incredible. Great review as always.
Finally just watched this. Beautiful. The ending was incredible. It was all great. The editing. Some of the best compositions & colors and grain. Music. Acting. Directing. Amazing. The ambiguity was great. So many questions but I loved that they didnt force any answers. Yeah this was a expertly executed. Wow. How is this not nominated for best pic? Ugh. Would have loved to see it in theaters. It didn’t come near me for some reason. Ok i just watched like 20 reviews on UA-cam. And now I think it’s my favorite movie of 2022.
Only got around to seeing it now. Agree a lot with Christy on the editing part, can’t remember the last movie where I’m watching passively and thinking how fluid the editing was even through the past, VCR, imagination and present
Saw this at NYFF. It is one of my favorites of the year. Probably the best use of Under Pressure in a film. It just overwhelms you with emotion. A24 has kind of blown the marketing and release of this one, IMO.
Am living for this film. Delicate evocative nonlinear unreliable narrator narratives get me every time. Can. Not. Wait.. Fantastic review, as usual. Woohoo, hoorah, hopla. Happy Holidays.
the last dance scene is one of the best of the year. Paul Mescal should win best actor but unsure if he will even get nominated. Great review and loved your personal insight Christy!
I became a HUGE fan of Mescal after seeing Normal People. He has so much talent and it blows me away. I wish his character in God’s Creatures could have been explored more. I am also kinda scared to watch Aftersun because of how emotional it is going to be for me. Mescal had me in tears in Normal People and the trailer for Aftersun has me in tears. I’m not sure I can handle it! I would love to see Mescal win the Oscar for this. He is just SO GOOD. Every role I have seen and that’s three performances but he has really blown me away in all of them. 😮😮😮
@@BreakfastAllDay I know I will end up watching Aftersun. It just seems so dramatic and I was late watching Normal People. That series DESTROYED me. The acting was so good and though it wasn’t tragic; it was so emotionally draining for me.
I can’t wait to see this movie; I’ve heard nothing but great things. I also grew up in the 90s and had a complicated relationship with my parents who got divorced when I was young, and it was a weird experience as a kid to not know what was going on, but you can tell your parents are going through something and things are changing, etc. Then I finally started seeing them as people way later than I should have (probably my early 20s). I think that is an interesting subject matter and I’m sure this movie with strike a chord with me. P.S., I’m a huge Chumbawamba fan 😂
I'd like your guys' honest input on this: do you think when it comes to running your own site to perform your passion of film reviewing, but you're not yet making a penny in return, is it worth it to keep doing it? To keep reviewing movie after movie, even tho no one is (currently) paying you to do it? That's my personal dilemma right now, and the lack of financial motivation is undeniably damaging in terms of staying motivated.
This movie bored me for the first half and then slowly an unsettling feeling built up inside me punctuated with flashes of mortal dread like nothing I'd experienced in a movie before. With the climax dance scene I was ugly crying and didn't stop for long after the film finished. The mirrors of my own life were crazy. While separating from my ex wife I took our young daughters for our first solo holiday to Oludeniz in Turkey! It brought back all those feelings of going through the motions to give my daughters a great time while inside I felt empty, lonely and cast adrift from myself.
I just watched aftersun, and I had heard it was great, and I wanted to like it, but as I was watching, it may be because it doesn’t provide answers. The film felt very empty to me now that could also be because of the detached nature of the the dad and the detachment between him and his daughter I don’t know, but I felt that sort of detachment as I was watching the film and made it very hard for me to enjoy. I definitely see why Paul mescal was nominated for the Oscar and I don’t think it was a bad film. But I would have a hard time recommending it
I liked the ending. I think I needed a reason to care for these characters though or a story that gave a little more insight instead of being so ambiguous all the time. That’s just me though. At that age, my dad paid for us to go to Orlando Universal Studios for a few days and we had fun. But i do remember seeing him cry when he got the bill. Now as an adult, I feel his pain.
I was expecting Paul to be playing an Irishman, that aside really want to see this film due to great word of mouth. That's high praise and score from you both, a must see.
When I heard about Aftersun I thought it was going to be a thriller or mystery, like the dad committed some crime on the vacation and asked his daughter to hush it up. And she speaks about it on her 25th birthday. Instead Aftersun is rather overlong vacation movie with a few moments of sweetness here and there but nothing else. After a while there is nothing to watch. And you know exactly where its going to end. Even the ending is very underwhelming. The acting is very ordinary. Its not really acting but a collection of scenes of lead actor and little girl swimming, and laying in the sun, and having drinks. With a few dialogues thrown here and there. Its shaky cam style of shooting to use Christy's terms. At least when you trying a make a sweet movie about father daughter relationship then use some real dramatic scenes. But this movie uses the "documentary" type cinematography for the entire runtime. There is really no substance in this movie, no story, no great scenes or moments and nothing to speak in terms of acting or directorial style either. I give it a 5. I am disappointed that a movie with a little girl as lead gets such a low rating but there is nothing to recommend here.
The film is not at all for everyone. And its not 'hype' when people genuinely relate to what they see. The film will only appeal to a relatively small number of people and that is why it is very much a limited release. I thought it was a stunning film.
Best movie of the year hands down! I was so waiting on y’all to review this! It’s so beautiful. I haven’t had a film affect me on a level like this in a while. I literally called my dad and hugged my mom and told them how much I loved them. Only cinema of this caliber can do that.

That is a great way to look at it.
Paul Mescal made it in to Best Actor and I am so happy for him!
I was bored for a lot of it but when the last 15 minutes tied it all together... I was STUNNED! Movie of the year!
So powerful, right?
I think that's the intention of the film. It's trying to feel like a very boring family holiday, having grew up going to resorts like this I could feel it.

It's so subtle yet complex. Thanks for your thoughts!

It's pretty incredible. What she does is so elusive, yet the images and emotions are so vivid. Glad you checked it out.
Yes! Glad you guys reviewed this one! I can’t agree more. What an excellent film.
Indeed, thanks, Kristopher!
Only got around to seeing it now. Agree a lot with Christy on the editing part, can’t remember the last movie where I’m watching passively and thinking how fluid the editing was even through the past, VCR, imagination and present

So glad you loved it too. Yes, that sequence is powerful.
Loved this movie so much, and love your comments here as well! Wells, Mescal and Corio knock this one out of the park. One of the year's best.
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks, Brian.
Congrats on 19K subscribers !! Let's get to 20K soon!
Woo hoo! We're getting there.
I thought it was an incredible film, it really got to me. I can't express how much it affected me.
I'll not forget this movie for as long as I have my memory.
Am living for this film. Delicate evocative nonlinear unreliable narrator narratives get me every time. Can. Not. Wait.. Fantastic review, as usual. Woohoo, hoorah, hopla. Happy Holidays.
Woo hoo indeed for all of that! Happy Holidays to you.
My favorite movie of the year and it’s not even close. So glad to hear your thoughts!
Thank you for watching, Brice!
The movie didn't grab me at first, but once I got on board with its tone it began to creep up on me so much that I was really moved by the end.
It's stealthy that way!
made me cry
The emotion sneaks up on you at the end, doesn’t it?
@@BreakfastAllDay that last scene hit me really hard, amazingly done.
I've heard mixed things, but the way you described it made me realize I'll probably love it. Thanks!
Let us know!
This movie is truly devastating. My favorite movie from last year.
It really creeps up on you, doesn't it.
I need to see this again. I really liked it but I think I’ll love it the second time. The ending was extremely emotional. I had to hold back tears…..
That final section is edited so powerfully. Glad you loved it!
the last dance scene is one of the best of the year. Paul Mescal should win best actor but unsure if he will even get nominated. Great review and loved your personal insight Christy!
Thanks Abigail! Love the way that dance scene was edited.

I haven’t heard of this film. Thanks for the recommendation. I like films you watch with people and discuss afterwords. Keeping an eye out for it.
Great! We think you'll love it.
Saw this at TIFF and been waiting for your review for a while now! Went straight into my top ten of all time
Thanks for watching! We're so glad we caught up with it.
I'm excited about this one! I'm always down for a film that doesn't hold your hand every step of the way and people can talk at length about it.
This is that for sure.

Thanks for all of that, Courtney (even the Chumbawamba part)!
Yay for the late 90's!
A fertile time for bad pop culture.
I've been checking for this one in theaters in Atlanta. Hopefully I didn't miss its theatrical run.
Fingers crossed!

We saw a completely different film…top film of the year
This film was very disappointing. Slow and monotonous. Subversive but not effective.
