Love this analysis. Aftersun is such a beautiful masterpiece. It doesn't feel like you're watching a movie, it feels much more significant and real. As a single dad who has struggled with depression for most of my life, this is the single most affecting film I have ever experienced. Thank you, Charlotte Wells, for making such a beautiful work of art!

Thank you for this comment and thank you for sharing 🙏🏾. Paul’s performance as well as the direction was phenomenal. I felt Paul’s sadness and empathized with him . I was most impressed by how despite leaving his daughter we don’t hate him for it . Instead I was really hoping he was ok and found peace

I really felt her anger at the end. How could he leave her?!? Maybe he thought she would be better off without him but I definitely don’t think she was. It seems like she stopped being the sunny, fun loving, tender little girl as soon as he walked down the airport corridor and into the abyss. Maybe she’s also remembering /mourning who she was before he left her? Charlotte Wells (and the actors) really managed to channel so many complex emotions into a 1hr 36 minute film.

Thank you for this comment and yes I felt her anger as well . He left her hanging . Also I think she was never as happy again as you said . This trip was the last time she felt whole

Excellent analysis. Really loved your take on all aspects of the film. I really love that you view the dance rave scenes as her seeking the answers from him - trying to find the “why” … where adult Sophie ultimately yells at him to “stop” and then embraces him. Saying “stop trying to hide all this away. Embrace me. Show me the truth” type of vibe.
The other scene that really stood out to me was where Callum spits on the mirror after Sophie is talking about her bones not working and feeling heavy, etc. He spits on the reflection of himself to represent hate of who he is and the thought that he passed this depression down to Sophie was too much.
Brilliant analysis though. Great stuff. This is one of the most deeply affecting films I’ve seen in a long time and easily my best of the year

Thank you Paul 😊 the scene where he spits in the mirror then shortly after is sitting with a towel over his head only hit me on the Second viewing . He tries so hard not to show his daughter he is hurting inside he can’t even let her in when she expresses that she sometimes feels as lonely as he does . This is a beautiful movie and Paul gives a stunning performance . It’s one of those movies that I will think about often

You are very good at articulating your thoughts. I tried telling my friend about this movie, and I was really struggling with finding the right words.

Thank you 😊 this was a very difficult review because I honestly had a hard time explaining how they were able to convey such emotion on screen.

This is a good analysis, I saw this only at the beginning of December, it is the loss felt that is so palpable. Really stayed with me for days this film. It gets under your skin and it's one you think about for a long, long time. Quite rightly given best film of the year in many quarters.

He was so so good. She was unbelievable too. Their chemistry just pulled me in and then walloped me emotionally.
I also think the sound design and editing were just off the charts good
