  • Trip down to bogs of Eastern North Carolina in November of 2022. Usually this site is completely beautiful with bright yellow-green Sarracenia flava (North American pitcher plants) but they had already gone dormant as we approach winter.
Sites like this are very secret and only shared throughout a tight community for their protection.
Sorry for the poor quality and randomness of the video with little structure or explanation. My main goal was just to enjoy some time with my little family and friends, and bask in the gorgeous wildness of this natural land.
Thank you Dr. Brandon Huber for sharing your enthusiasm and botanical knowledge for carnivorous plants and all things horticulture.

That still amazes me that they're only native in one small region on the planet. Thankfully with so many nurseries propagating them, it's unlikely they'll ever go extinct.

I have managed to see Venus flytraps growing wild, but not in their native habitat.
I live on the west coast and have never had the opportunity to visit North Carolina. On this coast, I have visited several Darlingtonia sites, the most interesting of which also had Pinguicula macroceras beneath a water fall, scattered about on rocks like green starfish.
Nearby where I live there is an isolated bog where CP enthusiasts have started a colony that contains not only native sundew species, but four Sarracenia species and Venus flytraps. They are not tended, but grow wild, slowly spreading around the bog.
A State agency was going to destroy them as “invasive” species. But after discussions with local enthusiasts, they were convinced none of them could spread beyond the bog and threaten anything native.
We go to see them once per year or so.

I love flytraps and it's amazing they are so localized to one area of the world then other carnivorous plants that are nowhere near related to them live all over the rest of the world.

The soil they are in is like a sponge and is very saturated. It is a combination of peat moss and sharp sand.

as red as they are it makes me wonder if a group came out and planted a few hundred around the bog of some clone or new variety from the plant groups just to help keep the species alive in the wild, most of your typical plants dont get deep red but more light pink

Venus Fly Traps are native only to a couple of counties along the NC and SC border near the coast. They're invasive anywhere else.

What kind of soil are they growing in?
If you were to dig a little hole, what would it look like?
    Is it rocky or sandy?
    I'd really like to know.
I heard if you plant them in soil containing nutrients and minerals they dont last long.
But how do all the other plants grow around it if that were the case?
Dont they need nutrients and minerals?

    • @marblebotanics
      @marblebotanics  Рік тому +1

It's a 50/50 mix of decayed peat moss and sharp sand. The other plants growing there are adapted to that soil type as well.

Here on the coastal plains law enforcement are aware of these plants habitats and they keep an eye on those areas. It's a felony to dig the plants plus
you can get into legal issues if your trespassing on private property. There are areas where you will see Sarracenia Flava growing along side the roads, they're
easy to spot because they're so tall. In spring you can easily find the Dionaea by their tall spikes of white blooms, but otherwise they can be tricky to find
as they are growing in dense areas of shrubs. If your exploring these areas keep an eye out for snakes, there are several venomous species that call these
      bogs home.
