Comparing 80 YEAR OLD Prismacolor VS 2019 Prismacolor Pencils: Have They Gotten Better Or Worse?

  • I'm so lucky to have found the FIRST edition prismacolor color pencils! I'm going to compare them to modern Prirsmacolor pencils, Faber Castell Polychromos and even a little bit of Crayola Color pencils. We're gonna find out if the quality has been on the incline vs the decline.

Alternative theory: they have always been softcores but the cores have dried/hardened over time
Note: I have a set of eagle prismacolors and they are just as soft as my new ones, but they were in an old protective tin when I bought them. Maybe air exposer over time changes or impacts the cores

I agree!! I have a set of BEROL's from 1970 (sigh...my first set)...and they were buttery soft and the ones I still have still are. I just can't handle the never ending breakage of the new ones. It's frustrating as heck and why I switched to Polychromos.

They are more for sure. I work in mostly vintage pencils and they seem to me to be the best of both worlds. Best of Polychromos and of Prismacolor. I thought it could be age but I like the older than Midpoint. There is a version before Eagle and that is when it was Eagle “Turquoise” Prismacolor colored pencils. Eventually it dropped out and Turquoise was meant for the graphite alone. Canada had factories as well and their versions kept up the quality much longer than US.

    • @TheMamaPowell
      @TheMamaPowell 4 роки тому +20

I get your point. The breakage has lead to many a fit in my own household. I do think they are trying to walk a fine line between being soft and to hard to layer the way we want them to. I find if I sharpen mine with a knife instead of a pencil sharpener they go farther with less breakage.

    • @Reeniepie

@@Reeniepie I do not agree that caran d'ache are the same. I have 3 different kinds of Caran d'Ache, Polychromos, prismas and a few others. They are all good for different papers and effects I want. I have been using Prismas for a long time and I believe people who say they break more easily. I don't think they are lying but I just don't have that problem 🤷‍♀️ I use all my brands of colored pencils and love them all. I have yet to find a pencil that is an exact dupe for prismas. I just enjoy them so much I could never get rid of them. Everyone is different though :)

Love this video....as a 62 year old artist, I got my first set of Prismacolors around 1970...and it really breaks my heart to see how the quality of this loved art supply has plummeted. In fact, I actually still have a few of my original Prismas in my collection (I can tell because 1) they say BEROL Prismacolor 2) the color FLESH instead of the now pc LIGHT PEACH and 3) they are stubs....The fact that these older pencils are still being used and haven't shattered into a million bits, while my brand spanking new pencils shatter if I stare at them too long...tells the tale. It's also the reason why I switched to Polychromos pencils...I had that wonderful set of 48 with the self standing packaging. It was the best. .Prismacolor...I hardly knew ye.....(lol) Keep it up Rae...I've been around the art world for a long time, and your videos are some of the best!! BTW...one more thing...it's not just an uneven core, or that the pencils are a softer formula...I'm fine with that...BUT the pencils break because the pigment cores are not glued onto the surrounding wood. Because of this, whenever a pencil is dropped (either in shipping or whatever) the core shatters into a million bits and that is why you often cannot sharpen them. I have tried heating up the pencils to soften and "heal" broken cores...but unfortunately, until the makers of this wonderfully buttery soft core start gluing those puppies in place...this will never stop. And I just couldn't justify paying good money for a pencil that I used once because every time I used it, it would break, and then break in the sharpener, again, and again, and again.......on infinitum....you get the picture.

Material do get old and brittle over time. I remember those pencils being soft. Like when you have new crayola crayons their better than the old ones. They do expire at times even though they shouldn't.
My american prismacolor still don't break and their butter smooth still but I keep them in a not so dry but dry area. So if your pencils came from texas or other silly hot states like California... they might be not the best reputations of what they were long ago.
Just to edit and add. It's because things still have moisture in them even wax unless their are products like dry pastel that they wont loss their consistence. Wax actually have moisture and when it loses it in products it cause them to not work well but to much of it can hinder it too.

Great video! I think another thing to consider is the effects of aging on old stock. I don’t think that a 1930s era pencil will perform the same way today as it did when it was new. But this is a factor that is virtually impossible to test unless you have the resources to make a new pencil using the original formula.

I had a set gifted to me in the 90s (I'm thinking 1994- because that's when I created my first OCs and used them for concept art) like when I was in 5th grade (god..) and I remember them being so much better. There are pieces I have from back then (when I sure as hell didn't know how to use them LMAO) and there's NO waxbloom, and if it's there, it's not that bad. Fast forward to pieces I did in 2015, and it's all over the piece. I gave up on them and moved on to Polychromos by Faber Castell- more expensive but well worth it!!

At 55 I have a nice selection of Prismacolors from Eagle to Berol to today’s version. Maybe it’s because of what I’m used to, but I still grab my older ones first! Another neat test would be between Faber Castell Polychromos and what was an absolute staple in Canadian Schools, the Laurentine coloured pencils that were made for school kids. Only about five years ago I discovered that they were made by Faber Castell. I searched my mom’s house for an old set and dang, they were freaking good!

Miss "Nancy Drew's" rudeness aside...I wondered the same thing. She didn't clarify that and it could be any of things you mentioned. I personally thought original & 80's vs 90's & now. But it could have been just the original vs now and skipped the 80's & 90's since 80's was similar to old and 90's similar to new. Anywho, doesn't really matter to me...idk why I watch these videos, I'm not an artist. Not a good one, anyway! 😄 I guess I still find it interesting and I like Rae's personality.

That 90’s 24 was my first prismacolor set, I still have it. The package is a little cheap but it does transform into an easel to make them easier to access while using them. I also have two 48 piece sets and a 120 from the late 90’s-mid 2000’s. Oddly enough, the 120 has Sanford prismacolor stamped on them instead of Berol.

Ok. Thank you thank you for making this video. Even my art professor and other artists I’ve talked to/artists I’ve watched on UA-cam have all said that the old prismacolors used to be sooo much better. I freaked out when I bought my first set bc just after I got it my art professor had basically told us that the new ones are literal trash. This is so interesting to see that the whole time it was just that their formula changed. Also idk why everyone says prismacolor is better than Fabre castell. I have both and Fabre castell is gorgeous haha. Both are great in my opinion.

The newest prism as that I looked at in hobby lobby were not the same pencil you showed at the end in the tin. There was no gold band, they said premier but were skinnier and not lacquered. The quality is no longer there. They were so skinny I would not be comfortable holding them for hours with my 80 year old hands. Any pencils before 1996 are useful.
