Seeing your old art really gives me hope for improvement in my own art! I think I compare my art to other people's art that have been through art school and are years and years older than me and forget that they had to start somewhere too, we all have to be a beginner sometime ❤️ love you Rae!
When I was younger I compared myself to other (better) artists all the time aswell and it would really drag me down. I would have never believed someone if they'd told me "someday you will stop comparing yourself to other artists" but I eventually actually stopped. Instead, the artists that I used to be so jealous about are now my inspiration to keep going :)
If you just keep drawing you will soon start to see improvement, it's super motivational and that's honestly the best about art. Always remember art has no destination, it's a journey :) you'll never stop learning and that's the great thing about it
Practice practice practice. What helped me (and how I was trained in high school) draw items from life with graphite, and use different levels not just HB pencils. Practice creating full ranges of value without smudging. Helps you learn to shade better and pay more attention to each and every detail and gain more control. Practice drawing a few items every week and you’ll improve. Knowing how to draw well (and proportioned) from life even helps when you branch out and be more creative and make cartoons. Studying from life helps
@@noel7085 if the only improvement you saw in the video was her tracing her drawing then maybe you should look a little closer at her art. She chose a harder reference to paint, with more abstract colors, used a medium she was more comfortable with so she could get the best results, and her blending skills and accuracy was amazing. She also used the carbon copy method to save herself time. All of those things took years to learn, and with that knowledge and from watching her channel, I know she could have just sketched her face if she wanted to but it would have taken a lot of unnecessary time when she wasn't showing her sketching skills, she was showing her painting skills and how her art has improved overtime.

People in the comments are all like “oml your “bad” painting is better than anything that I do” these kind of comments piss me off so much because if you people have time to comment something like that, then you have time to get up and draw something. Yeah it may be bad, but practice will make it grow, you can’t just snap your fingers and be good at something. Rae worked really hard to get where she is at, so don’t think she is just “good” at it, and she was born with the talent, no, she wasn’t, no one is born with an especially great talent, but if you work at it you can create a talent to be proud of.

You’re self portrait is fantastic! I did the same thing of doing redoing a portrait. May I make a suggestion? With your oils, I suggest you use Linseed oil mixed with your paint. It helps retain the pigment of the paint without thinning it out, while also helping with spreadability. Paint thinner is good for underpaintings, and Linseed oil is good for the actual layering of paint. A squirt bottle (condiment bottle) of 75% linseed oil and 25% paint thinner is ideal.

I think this was probably one of the first art videos that I saw when I first discovered art-youtube back at the beginning of the pandemic. It came up in my recommendations so I am rewatching it in 2022. Such a great idea to go back and revisit old artworks as a yardstick for growth.

I love this! You're my inspiration. I'm a 28 y/o mother with a 5,5 y/o daughter. I never meant to be an artist, but I always loved drawing, painting and practically everything creative (been like that since I can remember, in my family I was always known as the 'creative' one). When I first saw your videos (beginning of this year) I had a burn out, I was tired and the last few years had been an emotional rollercoaster, especially for my body. So, now my body gave up on me (don't worry, I was physically fine. Just extremely tired) and I took some time of from work, got my love for drawing and being creative back thanks to your videos. They mean a lot to me! I hope you read this and that I want to thank you for giving me that back! Now that I'm not so tired anymore, I still make some time to draw/paint again and I'm certainly not as good as you, but it's because of you I found my passion for it again! I think it would have been cool for you to start from scratch instead of using the carbon method because it would probably have been a fairer comparison but I'm still loving your new painting, you did a very good job with its colours and I can't wait to see what amazing art you'll be making in 10 years from now!
Ah! I usually never use the carbon method (if at all) for my drawings and some paintings! But this one I felt it was appropriate since I show what’s changed in my process! I appreciate the feedback!

This is called Reductive Drawing and is commonly done with charcoal.

wait so u transferred the picture onto the canvas by covering it with charcoal then outlining?? is it normal printing paper? thats so smart bruh
That is the oldest trick to transferring paintings. It is hundreds of years old.
You can use any kind of paper also you can use graphite to cover the back instead of charcoal
Or use transfer graphite paper if you want something less messy
