Hey everyone, the book was donated to a local museum shortly after this video was filmed. They were more than happy to take it in and it’s now safe forever!!! I’ll update you if they put it on display, so you can see it for yourself if you’re in the area! 👍 Im sure the artist would be happy to know that their artwork is in a museum.
I’m Sorry if I seemed rough in the video, I was just genuinely excited to share this with you all. I never drew on anything in the book. I saw some concerns for that.
So it’s safe, untouched and in the proper place! With that peace of mind I hope you all can still enjoy the video!!

I recently inherited from my grandpa an antique piece of furniture. While cleaning it out i found a piece of paper with a story partially typed onto it. After I pulled it from it's hiding spot between the wooden drawer frames and held it for a moment it DISINTEGRATED IN MY HANDS. I stupidly touched it with my fingers and badly damaged it. I shoved it into a book and I've not touched it since out of fear. Paper is FRAGILE and our grimey human fingers are merciless. LOL

Maybe even a local museum would have been glad to have it donated to them. I had no interest in my late uncle Sal's old NES and Atari games (Stadium Events and Air Raid) in particular, and other goodies in his box of old games and accessories he had. That didn't mean I didn't do my research and see what I could get for each one, but that was because I already knew that there were lots of people in a semi- hidden culture that have nothing better to do with their lives than throw lots of money at an old working game cartridge still in it's box and still with it's trimmings that has been lightly used. I have an interest in games myself, but I was certainly not going to be playing them. I was floored when I found out how much money some people are willing to throw at retro games.

She began sketching for a therapeutic reason when she was 54 and continued until the year before she died. I hope this helped, found it on a family tree website. Although she was 600+ miles from Gettysburg, it's clear that Gettysburg played a huge part in her life? Did she have a husband or brother that fought there. The drawings clearly showed she'd seen battle first hand. There was a lot of fighting in Tennessee, though not on the scale of Gettysburg

And that printing was only for books and newspapers and for highly official stuff. Typewriter in offices maybe, but that took also long to spread... So everyone had to make sure, that his/her handwriting is well legible for everyone. I don't know how that is in American schools, but in Middle Europe where I grew up, handwriting is still a very important subject in the first years of school (and that means cursive, first with pencil, later with pen). For the first 4 years (age 6 to 10) we weren't allow to change any of the letters in our own style/liking. Personal handwriting had to develop after that. First we had to learn the uniform way. And I am still better remembering stuff I wrote with pen on paper than what I have typed or only read. It is very efficient for learning in every age, I can highly recommend it.

Rae, please please please consider donating this to a local archive or museum. I've volunteered in an archive and let me tell you, the hand-drawn art was some of the most important stuff archives keep for the reasons you stated in your video. An archivist would be *thrilled* with this find, especially given the subjects of the drawings--both the commentaries and adult ones. Donating it would allow historians to research this fellow and learn more about American history and heritage, too. I know it's exciting to own something like this for its uniqueness, but I sincerely hope you consider donating it, since its history could go so much further, and it would last for so much longer into the future.

@@MandalaBunnyhome not an art museum, specifically--probably an archive in a university or a state history museum, which maintains a collection far beyond what you see on the floor. The purpose isn't necessarily to display works, but to collect and preserve them as tangible relics of the past. Proof of what people were doing and thinking about, back in the day. An art museum fulfills a different, though similar, purpose, but I agree would not likely be the place for these sketches.
Edited to add: when I volunteered at a state history museum, the majority of artifacts were from unnamed people. Like you'd have mittens or letters from someone who wouldn't even belong in a footnote in a history book. But the artifacts still recorded events, thoughts, day-to-day life of normal, average people. A sketchbook like the one in the video would fit in perfectly--it portrays practice methods used at the time (studying stamps), social commentary, sketches of scenes from the artist's life. That's exactly the type of thing a history museum curator or archivist might find significant.

This was fascinating! I’m 68 and that sketchbook is from the time when my grandparents were young adults. I have Grandpa’s dip fountain pen - it’s got a cork grip around the wood stem, and the cork is crumbling now so I don’t handle it at all. I think that’s what your artist would have used to draw his pictures. My Dad was born in 1932, and when he and Mom married in 1952, he was using dipped fountain pens still. I’m not sure when ballpoint pens became popular but I remember using cartridge fountain pens when I was in jr. high and high school. We were able to get different tips for our pens, and you could get very fine tips to broad tips. I don’t remember having markers when I was small - maybe in jr. high school. 🤷🏻‍♀️ That might be something fun to research and share on your channel - the evolution of art supplies. Since you do have some blank pages, I’d like to see you make a modern cityscape - what his street would look like today. And I like your suggestion of only using art supplies that he would have had available to make a drawing. It would be fun to watch you work. Anyway, thanks for sharing that “treasure”. Too bad we only know his drawings, and nothing about him. Maybe one of his descendants will see your video and contact you. Time will tell.

Judy Conry is written at the bottom of the drawing of the lady feeding chickens. Artist may be a woman. May be a student. Drawings were probably done with India ink and crow quill pen. Notice how the line is generally thin but the width changes. Old people have beautiful handwriting because as school childrenmanuscript (printing) wasn't taught in the early 1900s. Students were taught cursive (probably Palmer Hand) from the beginning. Palmer Hand was faster to write and easier to read than Spencerian Script that preceded it. You had to have fast, legible handwriting to get a job. Another thought: some of those drawings may be in silverpoint.

I think he might have fought in a war since his drawings of wars seem to be from an older time since he has a drawing from the battle of Gettysburg in 1863, so either he drew that from memory, meaning that he was around 70 years old or he drew inspiration from another painting so my theory of him being 30-40 is correct or the time might not have even been 1913 since we only derived that from a drawing..

So, those 'lithograph' sheets are assignments where the subject was already drawn at the top of the page, and there would be a blank space at the bottom for the student to draw that subject out. That's why the subject at the top was so well done and the one at the bottom isn't as perfect. They look like they are copied from a book, as there seem to be page numbers at the top. This portfolio is probably of school work that the artist did. What a great find and thanks for sharing. There is a lot of rich history being presented in those drawings.

I think it might be a misunderstanding. A lot of 'X-rated' hand signs today actually were something completely different in the past.
It is especially true since if this is the Conry I have heard of he worked with deaf and mute organizations.
I believe the second one confirmed this. A lot of sign language can be misconstrued by people unfamiliar with it. Especially older sign language.
Edit: Heck it could have been a Sewing or Knitting demonstration as well. Those were common themes for life drawing for a while for some reason. Maybe because it was a simple and easy scene that didn't actually interfere with most models lives.

Did he perhaps die in the First World War, and this was sent back home; usually the only part of that person to return, due to the horrific things that occurred on the battlefield. Sorry to sound so dark, but please treasure this intact, as the owner himself would have done? You're an amazing artist, not to mention soul, but you are you, not him. This was amazing, thank you! I’m curious what the woman was doing with her hands that required the censorship (LOL, not being a perv or a stickler, just genuinely curious what she could have been doing???). But again, this was amazing, thank you for the tour and commentary -to me looks likely a school for would-be illustrators(?) and also amazing how similar and yet different certain aspects of life are in a time so distant from now as you pointed out. Wonderful stuff!!!

Y’all need to calm down, I’m pretty sure Rae got the message. I get that y’all have opinions and I respect all of them. I agree that she should scan the drawing before she covers them. I also agree that she should’ve handled the sketchbook with latex gloves to prevent damage. Both of these messages where originally constructive criticism but people decided to make drama out of it. Calling Rae dumb for not using gloves in disrespectful and invalid to the entirety of the argument. Calling her rude for coloring on the actual drawings and saying “she always ruins things” is also invalid. I’m sure Rae will either 1) make an apology vid 2) scan the pictures and then color them.

Why is this comment section so harsh, all I see is comment after comment saying what she did wrong. I enjoyed the video, she exposed me to an artist that really inspires me. She had the right intentions, just because she wanted to color it doesn't mean you have to be mean about. ((Especially if she said she would scan it)) I doubt that she had any experience with a 100 year old sketch book. You don't do anything perfect on the first try:). P Taylor i have a year book from 1950, my stepdad found it at an old house, one day i needed to do a homework that i needed some pictures of people and i just had that book and i cut some of it, my stepdad saw what i did and said "don't cut it, might have some price" and i said "my homework is more important than money", I'm sorry but let's don't forget that we should not be so attached to something, things can go and come back as well, also as well we are a valuable piece of history too

How selfish does anyone have to be to think that homework is worth more than a part of someone's past? We shouldnt be too clingy to some stuff, I agree, but we also shouldnt just run around ruining things that might mean or have ment something for someone, that's a very dick thing to do.
"Things can go and come back" the sketchbook Rae is showing is unique. There's only one copy of it in the whole world, it's common courtesy to show it some respect. There may have been more copies of the yearbook you had, but how many in good condition? These things are priceless, they're an important part of someone's past, it may have been their only way to live on. A relative of one of these people or one of them themselfs may have enjoyed seeing the yearbook, the 50's didn't happen that long ago.
Besides, we're in a digital era with lots of technology at every corner. Why not print some pictures of other people or maybe scan the yearbook and cut the print of that? It doesnt matter wether you have an actual scanner or not, there's plenty of apps for it that do the job nicely. It also doesnt matter wether you have a printer or not, schools have them. And even if yours doesnt, someone in your class has, I assure you that.
You stained an amazing piece of history just for a piece of homework I bet you didnt care that much about, that's incredibly selfish, how could you not realize that? How can you say that this is fine without any remorse?
And yes, we are a valuable piece of history. Absolutely. That is, of course, if people from the far future care to preserve it. A shard of glass from an old phone screen doesnt hold any historical value. The whole phone does. People in the past didn't think their stuff would be found and much less that it would be seen as important. We've only started to have that ideia in mind recently. We have to preserve the few things we have from the past 'cause otherwise our grandchildren wont know how life was like, the farther into the past we go, the less stuff we have from it. Not just stuff like documents or anything, stuff from everyday life. Like a sketchbook or a yearbook. Preserving history is very important, and I can't see how anyone would dismiss it.
Honest to god, I really hope you're not any older than 12. I can forgive a kid doing stuff like that, but a teenager? They're more than old enough to undertand what they're doing.
Also also, unrelated note, but where are you from? I have yet to see an american with the name Gabriela, so that's interesting.

My first thought was that the family of this artist would probably love to see this sketchbook. I would be thrilled to see any drawing that was done by my grandparents or great-grandparents! Did you locate the family? I'm happy to know that this beautiful piece is safe in a museum, but I can't help but wonder if the artist's family knows where to view it. Thanks so much for posting this video! It warms my heart to see young people such as yourself taking an interest in the work of generations past.
