Classic Game Room reviews TURBO OUT RUN for Sega Mega Drive released in 1992. Hop into your Ferrari F40 and race across the United States in this 1992 release for the Sega Mega Drive / Sega Genesis. While more linear compared to its Out Run siblings, Turbo Out Run delivers solid, predictable acade style racing with good music and colorful graphics.
Turbo Outrun = Good in the arcades, absolutely bag of shite on the Mega Drive.
This is one of the worst ports ever. Practically everything that was good was removed. The port had a crap frame rate despite no track detail, horrible scaling, & far fewer cars.
The port sucked balls back in 1992...I can't imagine how bad it is now.
Yes, look at the wonderful Memphis mountains... towering up above the Mississippi river.
Fun fact: Instead of Sega this version of Turbo Outrun was developed by a small European developer called Tiertex Design, mainly known for making horrible computer games.

By now I've played all the Megadrive Outrun games and I think I might have to buy all of them, because they are all awesome games.
It doesn't look as great as outrun.
OutRunners is one of my favorite Sega Genesis games. It was one of the later releases from the mid 90s. The music was boss.
i'm starting to suspect that Mohammed doesn't exist, and it's just a character created by Mark... i mean, this guy should be crazy (and rich) to donate all these games and systems...
Nothing beats the Master System port.
I thought the music on this port was shite and no arcade effects to boot...boughtit on ebay...still love it though
what i was saying is that turbo outrun is megadrive exclusive so we get it and genesis don't.
I live in ATL, and yes, that does look like some bad southern snow.
It would shut our city down for weeks.

I think Outrun, Outrunners and Outrun 2019 are all betters than this one. The main problems i found is the slow framerate and strange handling.

Last time I went to Atlanta, I didn't see any snow or giant pickles. This game must be from the future.
The turbo feature is a nice touch.

Thankfully, I too also don't care about the graphics since im pretty a much old skool gamer myself, but I see what you mean. Graphics don't always make a better game and many people have truly forget the essence.
@berzu21 indeed. In that time, games were about the games, not the graphics. It is sad to say that today all they care about are the graphics

It's such a shame... this is by far the worst version of OutRun of all. It doesn't live up to any of the rest: Outrunners, OutRun 2, let alone the original!
Damn, Top Gear 1 and 2 are better than this, too, now that you mention them. All of the games mentioned above run smoothly and have kickass songs, unlike this one...
There should be a survivor version of this game. Outrun, Out play, Outlast. All challenges take place in your car, whether that be simple things like eating bugs in your car (careful not to wipe your hands on the dash) or by playing a giant lawn darts game with your car as the dart, and dirt as the lawn (just like my "lawn").
i love the arcade machine for this game. it vibrates so violently :P
@mklopf1 You gotta remember that this game was made in Japan in the early 90's. They didn't had internet back then so they had to rely on books, photos, or travel guides since they couldn't just go to the states at a whim.
mega drive does what genisisdon't as if you own the mega drive with the ext and high def writting on then u have region free mega drive.

@borobengal you should check out the artwork on the japanese boxes and instruction manuals to see why they're instantly cooler and more collectable then their western counterparts..although i do quite like how stiff and eighties some of the western covers look like Srider for example..both versions have their ups..the bigger 16Bit gold txt on the japanese console is way cooler than both the pal md and genesis imo and the colour scheme on the controllers was cooler too..it's all personal taste eh
at 4:29. Whoa Whoa Whoa! Memphis has mountains? I don't remember mountains when I was last there. Well I haven't been there since 1993. I know! Maybe the scientists from EUReKA went there with a super fast mountain growing formula to make fully formed mountains in a month's time. Yeah, that must be it. Wow science is amazing!
The Genesis was not Region codded. If you modded the cartridge slot it will play this game fine.
Sometimes your rival on the porche will scream "Take a hike, pal"
But you can't hear it that often
@SmoothCriminalAaron I had one of them gold Honeybee cartridges for mine, but only needed it to play Japanese games on my PAL Mega Drive, so I'm guessing the Honeybee cartridges worked with the Genesis, what with the cartridges being the same shape as PAL cartridges.
The PAL Mega Drive had the best logo, the Japanese one looks bland. The Genesis logo looked just as good, but I think Mega Drive sounded better. The Japanese carts look crap, but think they're more collectable. I'm sure this had a PAL release, but never got to play this anyway.
If you think the way they visually depict cities in this game is bad, you should see NHL Hitz 2003. The Winnipeg arena is just a frozen pond in the middle of the mountains, with a log cabin behind it. There are no mountains anywhere near Winnipeg at all and we actually have a huge arena.
This game looks terrible for a 16 bit game. It almost looks 8 bit.
@nintendoneil mode seven was great for racing games unless you wanted to have a hill effect..games like road rash and turbo esprit are good examples of great megadrive racers although personally i much prefer having a go on Fero or mariokart
@ZetZatar That's only true for games made prior to 1992. In mid to late 92, they started using region lock in the carts. There are game genie codes that will let you play some imports, but not all. The best option is to region mod your genesis.
Btw, you can play Megadrive games on your Genesis, they just don't physically fit due to their case difference. All you need to do is use a Game Genie (or similar) device that extends out of the Genesis, and you can play them just fine. :)

there the same thing genesis is the us version of the mega drive in fact i got a mega drive 2 thanks to classic game rooms review of the genesis 2 i got turbo outrun with it!!!!! :)

the genesis/megadrive didnt have very good racing games.... games like f zero and super mario kart for the snes were alot better because of mode 7...(the genesis had better shooters though because of the faster processor)
the C64 version of this game is way cooler just for the opening alone, it has some of the best use of sound sampling done on a SID chip. But Mark is right OutRunners is a lot more fun on the Genesis/MegaDrive.
So this is where they got idea for Need For Speed: The Run?

He forgot to mention both the F40 and 959 were never made as convertibles. I have the European version of Turbo Outrun and it is pretty awful when compared to the other games.
Oh c'mon! We all know what that chick was doing in the car with that guy.....messing with the radio and that's why he wasn't driving well. Had to fight traffic and bad tunes
I'm trying to debate on Outrun Online Arcade while it's on sale and before it's taken down next month. I was searching for a CGR review, but there doesn't seem to be one. =/

Oh REALLY Mark?!?! It does snow OCCASIONALLY here in good ol' GEORGIA!!!! Hell, when a 1/4 inch of snow falls on the ground, people don't go out at all.

The original Outrun was 8-Meg the supposed sequel Turbo Outrun was only 4-Meg. Not hard to see why it is considered a huge disappointment .
We still have the original outrun arcade machine near where i live in the uk , i play it every saterday lol that and space harrier :)

Mega Drive is called in the PAL regions like europe, japan and south america i had one as a kid the first model xD when i was a kid

We have so much to be thankful for, like not having to play these games anymore. Driving games have advanced a bit, to say the least.

the turbo button makes this game fucking awesome you just have to make sure you dont spam it, though the soundtrack is meh to the original outrun, its still a great port

This is worse than the technically god awful Amiga version by the same people, looks like a mildly improved Master System technically. Why SEGA didn't do it in house after their excellent OutRun boggles the mind.
