    This was brilliant when it came out. I loved Tokyo. My brother was actually in Japan at the time, and I'd drive around where he was, imagining what he was seeing there :)

    I remember I had waited months for the release of MSR back in 2000. And as I finally get a grip on this game I played it for hours and days in pure amazement. The graphics, the features and the song collection were way ahead of its time. And then came Shenmue...

      Exactly the same feelings and story... And then came the glorious Shenmue indeed.

    I had a first edition of this game and that edition came with a glitch in that every single race awarded you massive amounts of kudos points everytime so progression was made much easier. It was still a game that its moments where u tore your hair out but progression was generally fairly straight forward.
    The devs realised and changed this so that later editions of the game didnt have the glitch and u had to earn EVERY single kudos point but this was the days before downloadable updates so those of us that preordered and had a first edition got the easier game:)

      @@brandonfarfan1978 the first edition has many glitches and problems though, there is an article at The Dreamcast Junkyard titled "The Bugs of MSR" which you might want to read before you buy an early PAL copy of the game. The NTSC version which I have is way better and has much less glitches (it came in January 2001 though, 2 months after the first PAL version). Nowadays you can even play it on a mobile phone using a Dreamcast emulator.

    The really cool thing about MSR is the real-time simulation which is missing from the PGR games. It also simulates the length of each day very accurately, so the days are long in summer and short in winter. Very cool, and I have not seen any other driving game do this.

    They actually went to the cities in the game taking pictures of everything so the game's scenarios were as authentic as possible. Also, the music kicked ass. This game totally blew away Gran Turismo's rear back then IMO.

  • @Relugus
    @Relugus 12 років тому +1

    The lack of real-time in PGR always meant it lacked a certain magic MSR had. The attention to detail in the real-time simulation was stunning; it was months before I noticed that MSR simulates the time of day absolutely accurately; reflecting the actual length of days at the time of year! A stunning detail which I suspect most people did not even notice. Jacques music is pretty damn catchy (and in some cases damn funny)
    The free roam mode was awesome too.

  • @SteveBrandon
    @SteveBrandon 12 років тому +1

    Bizarre improved on METROPOLIS STREET RACER in many ways with the PROJECT GOTHAM RACING series, especially with having most of the major exotic car licenses, but the one thing I still love about the original MSR is the atmosphere, with the local DJ's and the "real time" lighting and some aspects of the weather system, especially in any race with fog. I even like most of Richard Jacques' soundtrack, "Am I Only Dreaming" more than makes up for the rather lewd country song "Long Long Road".

  • @Relugus
    @Relugus 12 років тому +1

    Yes. While PGR improved on it visually, MSR simulated the time of day (and the time differences between London, San Francisco, and Tokyo), it did this so accurately that whatever time of year you played it, it would accurately reflect the time of day, including the length of day/night. An astonishing detail which I have never seen since. Much as I enjoy PGR, the lack of real-time lighting means it lacks something that MSR has.

    8 reasons why this is the best racing game in the history of video games.
    1- Awesome easy to listen pop/jazz music with good vibes, mostly.
    2- The perfect difficulty to keep you interested and making progress at a reasonable pace without it being too easy or too difficult.
    3- Extremely fun once you get familiar with the physics of the game.
    4- Perfect balance between simulation and arcade
    5- Real streets with graphics that have aged extremely well and have this old retro charm to it now while still looking more than decent.
    6- Its simplicity, not a crazy amount of options and customization to get lost in, straight forward old school gaming (which means more time playing and less time adjusting parameters,etc)
    7- A truly groundbreaking game.
    8- Dreamcast :)

    Love/d MSR, the game really demonstrated the leap from PS/Sat?N64 to next gen.
    I don't think the PS2 had anything to compare to it, though the Xbox got the sequels, PGR and PGR2.
    But they lost something in the translation and though looked class, weren't as enjoyable as MSR.

      PGR as you said just wasn't as enjoyable, although it's IMHO the closest a racing game it's been to MSR in terms of fun, etc.

    One of the greatest games of all time, taught me how to play racing games as a kid, gran turismo was great yes, but this felt more rewarding and even though in my opinion it was tougher it also felt more laid back than gran turismo, this really doesn't get the recognition it deserves and a lot of modern racing games could learn a thing or two from this little gem of a title!

    Metropolis Street Racer is Project Gotham Racing. When the first PGR came out, OXM had an article about it. MSR is the original PGR. Bizarre decided to scrap MSR, and basically reboot the game with better ideas. The Kudos isn't just a similarity, the MSR game is what PGR was originally. And, for those who think this game takes forever to get through, play PGR4. That game never ends! I've been playing it for a few years, and I still have not reached the end of that game.

    It's not about being redundant, it's about giving a better understanding of the game in review, which is the real problem with many of CGR Undertow's shallow reviews, which have become a consistent thing.
    With this Metropolis Street Racer video, there wasn't a single Lord Karnage or Vextrex reference mentioned, but even with them in abundance, they don't stop Mark from delivering rich, detailed reviews.
