I really appreciate when you put in a segment at the beginning telling us which rounds are most interesting. I love your content, but don't often find myself with the unbroken time to watch a full league, so it's super helpful!
23:55 The opponent likely attempted to play something other than Disruptor Flute and Dauthi's wording respects timing restrictions, so they were unable to play it.
I feel like lands has the highest percent of banger leagues, please keep them coming, seems like a deck that's just very fitting for intricate plays and cute lines aka your bread and butter.
@9:41 would have grabbed Mox Diamond to allow myself to Life From the Loam. Don’t really care if it gets dazed. Next turn having two green mana, you can exploration and life from the loam, begin the wasteland lock and getting Urza’s saga back online to either grab your spear or map for tabernacle depending on how the game plays out over the course of the next 3 turns
That was my immediate thought too. The magus control deck isn’t threatening you any time soon but you can pretty much guarantee they have a counterspell. Picking up a 2nd punishing fire seems like the way to go
At 55:49, why didn't you use Grove to put a second Punishing Fire into hand with Magus on the Stack? Magus was turning Tabernacle into a mana-producing land anyways and it reduces the chances of the counterspell being a blowout.
27:42 Otawara would've also been an out here, if it hadn't been swapped out for another Tropical Island. Since you briefly questioned at the start which situations it would cover that Boseiju (which is in hand) couldn't.
55:55 you could have tapped grove in response to the magus and gotten either one or both punishing fires back from the graveyard to deal with magus instead of only relying on the one copy in your hand
53:50 G1 R5 Hyper Marginal, but you could have dredged with Loam for more looks at punishing fire. You had exactly enough to activate ghost vacuum with snapcaster and snap fire onto magus
Playing grove in a deck that wants to mostly win with Depths seems off in an era of magic that you can’t really be grinding anyways. What about a grove/punish version of 8mulch?
Cool league. Flutes pretty medium there. I have been using them a bit more proactively. Library feels kinda slow. Have to think on some other options for those slots. Maybe its something really degen like a fluster and a consign. GG's thanks for taking it out. Totally agree that lands strategies are in a bad spot. Lands is the deck Ive got the most reps on, and success with, so I tend to stick with it.
9:30 i woulda got shadow spear. admitably, it woulda been bad since the petty theft came shortly after, but the stay alive longer play seemed good to me
at 12:30 is there a reason you only played turn 1 wasteland and didn't turn 1 taiga -> exploration -> wasteland? seems like a missed land drop, or am I missing something?
@@ThrabenUniversity ok ok. Daze is def a thing isn't it? I thought maybe you were playing around interaction, but since they tapped out for Ponder I didn't think it was an issue; forgot about Daze. I'm more used to modern.
For a while now it's seemed like Marit Lage is too easy to deal with. How would this deck perform with swapping that out for something else? I like Ghostquarter, with so few basics in decks it's basically a Strip Mine after the first one, and even the first one shuts down utility lands.
9:30 I like the needle here. Spear is probably the highest upside if they don’t have a removal spell, but if they don’t have removal 10 power is gonna win pretty fast anyway so pressuring them in a different way makes sense
I'm not really a fan of trying to needle fetches against Delver until they show you a Badlands or whatever. Optimal Delver is 2/2/2/2 fetches, so you're so unlikely to keep them off-balance by Needling the fetch. I agree with the assessment that we have inevitability if we don't die. I personally would've gone for Vacuum. Keeps DRC and Murktide offline which is how we get punked out.
Hey Phil, been watching you for a while now and I've been feeling the itch to play legacy. I've limited time and honestly it's been a minute since I have played on mtgo. What's the best way for an entry into this format?
I recommend getting a rental account through a company like Cardhoarder and trying out a handful of decks until you find something you like. Play a couple of games in the tournament practice room until you are comfortable with the controls and shortcuts again, and then start trying to play leagues. If you're looking for a deck suggestion, I'd try something powerful and linear until you have a better feel for the format again; snag a list from a website like mtggoldfish or mtgtop8.
9:30 100% pithing here because I just can’t pass up a good ol stone rain. I agree with spear making push better. Why make our opponent’s cards better when we can make them worse?
Mycospawn actually seems like a pretty good candidate for this list. Since the inability to remove basics seemed like a sticking point for the deck at times

Specifically they tried to play urza's saga, you can see Saga getting the blue mtgo "can be played this turn" text
Specifically it looks like they targeted Urza’s Saga
I feel like lands has the highest percent of banger leagues, please keep them coming, seems like a deck that's just very fitting for intricate plays and cute lines aka your bread and butter.
55:53 should have returned other punishing fire with grove to have two answers in hand
Waste landing your own bog brought me joy untold
That second game against Reanimator is why I keep playing Loam decks.

Obligatory algorithmic contribution. Bonus for lands!!!
Hell yeah!
This is why I love Legacy. this deck is 90% the exact same Lands deck list I have been playing since 2012.
I appreciate when you give insight about which matches to watch, you did not disappoint. GGs bro
Always stoked for these intricate lands games.
55:58 why not return punishing fire with grove in response to magus?

@@seifeir6951 Only thing I could think of would be to play around Daze, but the opponent hasn't shown it so it's prolly a mistake.
@@Valc09 opponent showed the counterspell trifecta in g1 and you can be certain every FoN is in against the loam/punishing fire deck

Is there anything I'm missing if I think vacuuming snapcaster and using the second ability of vacuum in game 5 round 1 an option?
Is this a 76 card deck? I may have miscounted but I noticed game 2 you had 61 to start.
I love the idea of lands decks, so something that can navigate the current metagame is always welcome! Good games Phil!
Thanks phil from the future and thanks phil from the video for a great 2024 of mtg! Happy new year!
Hyped PhilFromTheFuture is the best Phil 0:01
Omg I love this. Punishing fire was before my time. Sweet tech!
55:55 you could have tapped grove in response to the magus and gotten either one or both punishing fires back from the graveyard to deal with magus instead of only relying on the one copy in your hand
can't get both with only a single red source, and can't use the magus mana because the trigger is gone by then
@@sephirothrr Can however get one back! Fortunately god is on our side.
Look, when you say this league slaps, im trusting that. Let's buckle up
You ever think about how Phil from the Future never will be from the future

This was fun and spicy. Happy to see punishing fire
With Winota stompy not being a viable deck in Legacy, I'm glad to take solace in these Life From the Loam decks.

I think between fetches and the shocks off Fire, burnwillows won't put most opponents above 20 unless they're specifically playing around marit lage
New Phil Lands league? Sign me up!
Punish fire cleanses the legacy player’s soul
Happy New Year Phil of the Past
I think the needle was correct given you had the wastelands in g1. Will watch the rest later. Cheers!
I would have probably fluted K command round 3. Ive stolen many eldrazi games that way.

XD

It’s always nice to see a fair (non-blue?) Strat do well!
In game one of round 5. You possibly have dredged a punishing fire and used ghost vacuum to make a snapcaster mage to clear
I want to fit a Field of the Dead into this list, but I don't know what/if to cut. 😭
Phil says it's crazy? Okay I'm game
Oh lands my beloved
At 34:44 would it of not been correct to Disruptor Flute the Command when you identified it as a threat, then Sor/Upkeep the DD?
56:01 paaainnn you could’ve returned one punishing from grave to have the second fire in hand for next turn!
Always needle a fetch when you can
the moons + depth interaction is cool, does red stompy have room for a combo finish?
You had me at lands
The best Phil on the best deck!
Think you can fit a dismember for harbinger?
@ 9:00 I would fail to find for the psyschic damage.
