- On this episode of Navigating Academia, Dr. Singh discusses the 5 steps to becoming a psychology professor.
I used to think that to become a psychology professor you get a graduate degree and apply for a job. And if you're a good teacher then you'll get the job. That's not the case and it's really oversimplified. There's really discrete things that you need to establish before you can successfully apply to a place that you would actually want to teach.
If you're somebody who is driven you don't want just any position. You want to be able to teach at a place you would really enjoy. So the goal of today's video is to take you through 5 different steps that you need to take in terms of 5 things you've got to establish to be able to get the job done and lock down that academic position.
Step 1 - Complete a Doctoral Degree
Step 2 - Establish a Publication Record
Step 3 - Establish a Teaching Record
Step 4 - Establish a Grant Funding Record
Step 5 - Establish a Personal Reputation

I also want to be a psychology professor but I'm still far away from it I mean I haven't step to college yet. god English is hard this is my second language :)
You’re doing great
Underrated channel
Thanks bro - please do share with friends and colleagues - my hope is we can grow it together as big as possible - lots more videos on the way (every Tuesday at 10 AM EST)
This was great. Thank you for making this video. You outlined the steps to becoming a professor of psychology in a very clear, organized, and systematic fashion. By chance, do you write for Psychology Today? That's a magazine that I personally really like. My personal favorite area of psychology is contemplative, religious psychology. I absolutely love that! Focusing on how religious practices, such as prayer, yoga, and meditation can help restore psychological health and balance. Super interesting stuff! You're dressed like a professor of law, man. hahahaha. Not psychology!!!
PS, I'm not sure if you're acquainted with Jordan Peterson, but he was formerly a professor at my university (University of Toronto). I loved how Jordan Peterson incorporated literature, philosophy, and religion into his lectures. It was kind of like a blend. It wasn't just psychology from a purely scientific perspective he was teaching. That was truly great.
Thanks bro - love me some JP ✊

I went back to college to study physics and ended up to switching to psychology and cognitive neuroscience. Then, realized that I want to do research and become a college professor. :D
Btw, please continue posting videos. They are very helpful for not only those who are in high school but also for those like myself are categorized as “adult learners” and we are kind of rough in this new educational system.
In summary, yes post all those videos. All of them! :D
Cool!

The community colleges/ universities in my state have masters degree as the minimum
I am concerned about the experience part I will have the masters but no other experience but I work full time in a different field while finishing college
If you have a masters in the field, then I suppose you would be fine. As I’m sure you can understand, if you’re up against someone with a doctorate or more experience, they will get the job over you. But that doesn’t mean don’t try!
Sorry but I need some help, I will be finishing high school soon so what do I do after that?
University
I badly want to be a teacher in phylosophy and/or psychology but I don't have time to get a masteral degree. Is there any possible way to achieve it?
Not that I know of. Maybe being a high school teacher of those subjects, actually.
Nice

how many years does it take to become a psychology professor
4 years of undergrad + 4-7 years of grad school + (optional) 1-3 years of post-doctoral fellowship. So assume 9 to 14 years after secondary school to become an Assistant Professor. To become an Associate Professor with tenure, add another 5 years to that.
Dude I want to be someone like you someday in life. HustleX3000
