You can hear the Lightnin' Hopkins influence here. Great tone! Burton has said he used a small Gretsch amp on this. And this was before he started using the super light strings.
Mr Burton played all the guitar parts and did all the arrangments for my mom's 2 albums from 68 and 69. "Anna Black • Meet Anna Black" and "Thinking About My Man" - songs to listen to are Little Annie Weed, Gloomy Sunday (by Billie Holiday) and the Beatles Eleanor Rigby - just to name a few highlights.
James Burton AKA 'The Telemaster' in 1957. Thanks for pulling apart the original. If nothing else, it highlights the true genius of these rock guitar pioneers. Thanks for your Cliff Gallup, Scotty Moore and James Burton lessons so far.
I started doing some Rick Nelson stuff and really got "hooked" on James Burton's playing...many thanks Adrian for showing his style of playing...I noticed that James Burton played with a finger-pick on his middle finger which I thought was unusual but he has been doing this for eons. Just starting to do "hybrid picking"...not easy as all I have been doing is "flat picking" ! ! ! !
I've read an interview with James Burton about 10 years ago where he says his first guitar was a Telecaster, so it most likely was recorded on that. I had a friend from the same town in northeast Louisiana where James is from and he learned the lick from James. He taught me the correct way to play it about 20 years ago, just as you played it. Thanks!
Sure and you know how to pick 'em Adrian. Another great song which I knew at a basic level but you have added nuances I can learn and use. Many thanks!
You have the same gear Mr Burton used, an old telecaster and and "old" fender Deluxe combo. The Tele was his 1st electric guitar and he played it 97% of the time and then Fender gave him a paisley Tele in the late 60's but he was still favoring his 1st that his parents bought for him in the early 50's.I watched a "Hall of fame" viddy interview and thats what he told the interviewer. You nailed it!
Ah, James Burton! One of my favorite rock'n'roll guitarists. Well done. You've succeeded in getting to the guts of Susie Q. BTW, James Burton came up with the riff, so the story goes, and Dale Hawkins improvised the words.
Great video Adrian! Thank you so much. The sound is just perfect. During the solo there is a percussive sound as you strum from the echo effect that makes it absolutely perfect. I have a great story for you. I purchased a Fender GTX-100 modeling amp with 200 presets, but it also allows you to download tones created by other folks. Just an hour ago I was fooling around with it and came across a tone named 'Cow Punk' and it is literally this exact sound that you have in this video. It is absolutely perfect for Susie Q. I can honestly say I had no desire to learn Susie Q until I saw that you posted a video about it, but now it is my favorite tune to play! Especially with the newly found 'Cow Punk' tone. Excellent video as always, Adrian. I really appreciate all of your videos.
Saw the film Le Mans ‘66 yesterday and had to Shazam the song ..... Polk Salad Annie.... by James Burton. Digging around for UA-cam lessons brought me here. Couldn’t find a decent tab anywhere. Would be fantastic if you did a lesson on that track from the film. Totally opened my eyes/ears to James Burton...ashamed to say I had only heard of Scotty Moore as an ‘Elvis’ sideman in my years of fiddling with guitar. Discovering lessons like yours are inspiring me to get my head down and actually learn rather than just fiddle. Thanks.
Great lesson - at the risk of sounding pedantic, it's not actually James' first recording, he played on various tracks on the Shreveport based RAM label before this. Dale Hawkins "wrote" it in that he made sure he got the writing credits but it's absolutely James' lick (after Howlin' Wolf pretty clearly!). Oh and technically he used pick and also metal finger pick on his middle finger. Anyhow, great stuff all round.
I see you have the same Fender '64 Custom Deluxe Reverb I have ..i just had it worked on recently , the tech tracked down a factory flaw which was plaguing me for a while with hiss and floor noise..it's back sounding good now..
Hey I'm using same Fender amp and Belle Epoch! Having the hardest time keeping that low E thumping after the phrase. I know, practice. Dig your lessons. Found your channel looking up "Star Men" or maybe it was "Sound and Vision" by Bowie.
Superb video Adrian as always ....Could you show us how to play the Awesome descending lick at the end of Emmylou Harris version of Ooh Las Vegas....You got pretty close to it in your Fantastic Hybrid lick video which ive got down now but be great to have that one aswell…. Love Mr Burton ....Regards Tony B
This song is the "real deal" and really the only version to learn ( IMHO) CCR was great but this version kills CCR's interpretation. Thanks for taking time to do this particular lesson - click on slapback !
could you make this song in Johnny Rivers version, I think that is the best version and you can listen their solo and is better. please try Rivers version.
Wonderful job! I used to work as Dale Hawkins' bass player. He was a hell of a nice guy and quite a character.
@Jordy Ezekiel you guys are gonna get detention for goofing around while Adrian is trying to teach!
Without a doubt, one of the best guitar tutors on UA-cam. Thanks again.
You can hear the Lightnin' Hopkins influence here. Great tone! Burton has said he used a small Gretsch amp on this. And this was before he started using the super light strings.
Great job Adrian for a great rockabilly classic. This Dale Hawkns-James Burton version is the most soulful version of Susie-Q.
Adrian really is the tastemeister par excellence

That's amazing - found the albums on Spotify - I'll check them out this week!

Thank you Adrian, I joined your Patreon. You are keeping the guitar styles alive that I love.

Susie Q is one of the coolest riffs ever. Going to dig out the delay pedal.
Thank you Adrian.
The internet absolutely needed this lesson:the Creedence version is ubiquitous and that’s fine, but this is the one-thank you!!!
Same Scotty Moore👌
Sun records from 1955 by Elvis Scotty and Bill - Mystery Train 😃👍
Sure and you know how to pick 'em Adrian. Another great song which I knew at a basic level but you have added nuances I can learn and use. Many thanks!
I watch a lot o f tutorials on the you tubes. This is by far one of the best.
Cheers !
Another fantastic choice. I’ve wanted to learn this for a while now. It’s like this guy can read my mind!

The very first part of that lick and the technique used is a lesson in itself.
Adrian, not only that I love and appreciate your lessons.. I enjoy your thumbnails, very classy.
Thanks Adrian, much more authoritative than some of the other YT lessons out there. I appreciate your diligence 👍👏🤘

Excellent video as always, Adrian. I really appreciate all of your videos.
Adrian, you should get a spot on the Queen's Honour's List for this. Brilliant!
Apocalypse Now! This is where I first heard this one, loved it ever since.
Beautiful played, and this is a great tutorial. I keep avoiding trying to learn hybrid picking, but this is going to be my motivation to try. Cheers!
Awesome lesson as always. I really admire your eclecticism and good taste.
Burton played a telecaster very early on. You can see him playing one when he played on the Louisiana Hayride right around the time they recorded this
Weekend homework!!! Excellent.
Thanks very much for this outstanding lesson, Adrian!
Love to hear you doing this can’t be today by the rain parade as a tribute to the great David Roback
Yes!!
Want to tell you that you are excellent! Thank you for excellence and dealing your knowledge.
Great song, great lesson, great teacher...👌🏼

I made one of my special Picks for James Burton.
Dude, great job.
Wow that Tele!
great lesson !
Thanks for the cool vídeo ♥️
Thx avlot .good work.
I am really struggling with the hybrid picking, keeping the beat on the low note. I won't quit until I get it but frustration has set in...
Fantastic lesson, Adrian, you spoil us 👍🏻
This main riff is basically smokestack lightning isn't it?
It is very similar indeed. ActiveMelody Songs has a great lesson on Smokestack Lightning if you haven't seen it already :)

Superb.
Thanks!!

So did one of my heros Johnny Winter

I like that. Tele was misbehaving lol!
This song is the "real deal" and really the only version to learn ( IMHO) CCR was great but this version kills CCR's interpretation. Thanks for taking time to do this particular lesson - click on slapback !
Adrian....You need to travel to Nashville.......
could you make this song in Johnny Rivers version, I think that is the best version and you can listen their solo and is better. please try Rivers version.
Love that Tele! What model is it!
A pleasure for the ears, well done Adrian! I would also say thank you, but hybrid picking is out of my league unfortunately.
Ok I think I got this now...
Wow!
Bom no ensino. thank Adrian. maneco - Brasil.
Hi, do you use a pedal? You have a nice sound a bit
Awesome as always. Could you please do a Built to Spill tutorial? Randy Described Eternity or I Would Hurt a Fly perhaps?
5:17
6:54
12:28
What effects are you using to get the tone.
What pickups do you have loaded on that tele?
Adrian, where is the TAB ?
