2024 VW Atlas Review: Engine Good, Touch Controls... Still Not

  • The 2024 Volkswagen Atlas has received two big updates - a 2.0L turbocharged four cylinder engine and a completely revised touch-controlled interior. While the turbo four makes as much power and torque as the old VR6 (RIP) and the #VWAtlas is actually quicker now given it's a bit lighter - the interior follows other recent VWs in being... pretty frustrating.

I own a ‘24 Atlas Cross Sport and love it. Never had an issue with the touch controls. Yes it took me a few days to learn but that is true for any new car.

Great review and spot on. My wife has been driving a white R-line for a month and loves it. I got her the Atlas and took her 2023 ID4. We dont have any trouble with the touch controls (familiar since we have the ID4). I tend to just tap for volume and temp changes instead of swiping; the response is fast enough. I agree, they should be back lit. The Atlas works well for it's intended customer, which isn't a car enthusiast like me. The 2.0 liter engine (a detuned Golf R plant) is a bit loud until you're up to speed but it's not bad and doesn't struggle; if you put it in sport mode the fake V6 sound is pumped into the cabin. 😅 The Atlas LED on the passenger side dash trim is a nice effect at night. I wouldn't have an Atlas for my personal vehicle, but it's perfect for my wife who wants to drive a marshmallow with light steering and lots of room. The Atlas is a good value, we bought it for $48K which is several thousand less than the competition we were cross shopping.

The Atlas looks like exactly what it is: a vehicle with a body shell and stampings from one decade and details from a different decade. It doesn't offend, but neither is it particularly handsome. It's too bad VW couldn't spend the money to retool some of the body stampings, especially those crude swage lines and wheel flares.

    Another great video.
I recently rented an 2024 SE with Enterprise for only 2 days. . I really needed a week to get used to the technology. Thank goodness for you tube to get me thru.
I like the height of the vehicle, interior quality and comfort, and its quiet.
The poor visibility lights (activated in lower left light buttons) are really cornering lamps hidden in the headlight assembly and light up when turning the wheel in either direction
Like the dual exhaust ,unfortunately not connected to the faux bumper exhaust. The turning radius on this , the ID.4 , maybe other VWs too, is industry leading. Turning on a dime
I wish VW (America made cars) would install (even as an option ) the high intensity rear fog lights that Audi and Porsche still have. Toureg had them, i guess because it was manufactured in Germany

This video totally made my day! I just test drove the VW Sel R-Line Premium (Aurora Red), Honda Pilot Elite, New Hyundai Santa Fe Calligraphy today. Suprisingly, I loved the VW over the Honda (was dissapointed honestly) and was pretty much sold... Until.. I drove the UGLY Santa Fe Calligraphy. That was the true winner in my opinion. I honestly was super shocked that it was so nice. Now I have to decide between the two. I'm really torn. Your video helped tremendously.🤗

So glad it was helpful! Did you end up making a decision yet?

Haven’t made a decision yet. Forgot to mention that I’m driving a Subaru Ascent Touring (my Volvo XC60 is in the shop for a mild fender bender) and honestly I see why people love Subaru’s! I really like it but I am losing some luxury features. The powertrain is excellent and it handles as if it’s on rails. 🤷🏽‍♂️

Jake, I'm with you - I miss the Touareg but the Atlas makes sense in the US. I REALLY wish that VW had held off adding their crap infotainment in this one. The Golf/GTI/R and the ID.4 have gotten absolutely destroyed by the press for that garbage and rightfully so. Seems like VW just shrugged their shoulders and kept on moving forward with the facelifted interior because they were too far down into development to change course. It's a shame because I hear the newest iteration of the touch controls at least backlights the controls. Glad they are using buttons on the steering wheel though. My wife's '22 Tiguan has the haptic garbage on the wheel and it is horrible (not to mention the hands-on detection has an extremely high failure rate and has resulted in the steering wheel being replaced to fix incessant travel assist errors).
I'd be an interested buyer in this Atlas if if weren't for the bad UI. I like the refreshed interior otherwise. I'm a hardcore VAG guy and have lots of experience with the 2.0t engine - even in a Q7. It's impressive for what it is and probably better than the old VR6.
Side note: I was one of the bidders on your Cayenne which is how I found your channel and have subscribed! I ended up getting a different one about a month after yours sold. What did you end up replacing your CD with? They are AWESOME cars. And yes, if you want a modern Touareg, just buy a Q7/Q8 or a Cayenne. I'll probably pass on the Atlas and get a Q7 sometime in the future.

VW needs to give it one of the V6 turbos, or maybe the 2.5T 5 pot for an Atlas R variant.

Great review but the 2 negatives for my are the 4 cyl turbo I prefer a N/A power plant. The other is a huge negative thats all the touch sensitive controls, please give me physical controls.

Having driven both, ide take the turbo, especially going up a mountain grade. The VR seems stressed and the transmission shift points are loud.

Although it looks great, I’m noticing that this car is literally just a bunch of existing parts cobbled together. The pedals are the exact same ones I have in my A4, the buttons for the defrost from the ID4, and the gear selector from the Golf/A3, etc. I get that’s how VAG works, but for their volume seller, you would think they wouldn’t just half ass it and cobble together a parts bin second facelift….
