Diana sabotaged her marriage by falling in love and getting involved with her bodyguard Barry Mannakee in 1985-1986. They were spending a lot of time alone together, openly flirting, and others noticed. Allen Peters, another bodyguard, noticed and informed Charles. Charles ended his intimate relationship with Diana. Otherwise, it would be possible for Diana to have a child by another man and pass the child off as an heir to the throne . That would be high treason.
In 1994, Charles publicly confessed his marriage was irretrievably broken down by 1986 and that's when he renewed his intimate relationship with Camilla in 1986.
Irretrievably broken down referred to the conflict in the marriage and Diana's relationship with her bodyguard. There was a lot more wrong in the marriage. They were not compatible in many ways. Their relationship became increasingly toxic and both were miserable. Diana blamed Camilla for the problems in the marriage to divert attention away from her affairs that were being reported in the tabloids. Diana had 8 or more affairs before the divorce was final in 1996. Some of her affairs were with married men and Diana was labeled a home wrecker in the tabloids. Diana was the other woman in Will Carling's and Oliver Hoare's marriages. She knowingly hurt other women.

I thought it was very hypocritical of Diana to blame Camilla for the problems in the marriage in her 1995 BBC Panorama interview.

This was 1986. Charles and Diana were already on the “outs” at this point. She doesn’t even wait for him to line up in the Abbey. He seems to be doing his best to just sit next to her. So sad. They were both at fault in different ways. However she was 19 when she got engaged. She barely knew anything about living life. He was 32. Well educated and well traveled. But in love with another woman. It was a disaster in the making. We just didn’t know it.
He - and the entire establishment - were naive to assume she’d accept what they were asking her to accept.
Charles and Camilla are not some grand love story. Camilla wasn't even his favourite mistress - that was the late Lady Kanga. Camilla's advantage was her proximity to Charles and always making herself available. If Camilla was so besotted by Charles, she never would have married Parker Bowles. Charles could have married Camilla back when they were both single but he wanted to play the field. Both were content to cheat on their respective spouses. They are a couple of amoral people. Poor Diana. She really didn't have a chance.

The marriage was a tragic mistake. Both had different expectations and needs. Both failed to provide what the other one needed. They were not compatible in many ways. They didn't have any common interests other than the boys.
It was pretty much an arranged marriage. They didn't really know each other before the wedding. Charles was pressured into proposing to Diana by the queen and prince Philip. If you read about their courtship, proposal, and engagement, it's pretty clear that he didn't love Diana. He was surprised when she said yes to his proposal. He all but ignored her during the engagement. He was probably hoping she would break off the engagement. Diana knew in March 1981 that Charles was very fond of Camilla and they are best friends. He didn't change his bachelor lifestyle until the day before the wedding and Diana knew it. The day before the wedding Charles told Diana he didn't love her. Both had second thoughts but it was too late to cancel the big wedding.

Diana had unrealistic expectations primarily because she had a crush on Charles since 1977 when he was dating her sister Sarah. As a child her nickname was Duch, short for Duchess. She believed she was destined to marry into the royal family. She was raised to become a wife to an aristocrat or royal. That was her "career" plan. She had dropped out of school, lacked education, and was working in unskilled jobs, primarily child care. Her parents provided a flat in London where she was living with girlfriends.
She was known to read romance novels where the main character marries her prince charming and lives happily ever after. Charles is not prince charming. I believe Diana was in love with her fantasy of Charles and she wanted her dream of being a member of the royal family.

The honeymoon was a disaster. Charles planned a 3 month relaxing vacation to get to know each other. They didn't know each other. Diana was disappointed, angry, argumentative, and she had a destructive outburst of anger. She was binge eating and purging multiple times a day and crying. Just saying, the smell of vomit is not an afridesiac. Charles found a therapist for her before the honeymoon was over.
Diana refused therapy at that time.
Charles had ended his intimate relationships with all the women he was seeing, including Camilla, just before the wedding. He wasn't willing to end his friendship with Camilla. They met in 1970 and Camilla is the most emotionally supportive person in his life. Diana wasn't emotionally mature enough to be supportive.
Both Charles and Diana needed supportive people in their lives. Diana was extremely emotionally needy. She suffered from depression, low self-esteem, and self-destructive behaviors including bulimia before she met Charles. She had mental problems caused by her unhappy childhood. She had anxiety disorders related to her mother leaving her children when Diana was age 6. Her parents marriage was toxic. Diana was emotionally neglected. She said she felt unwanted and unloved as a child. Diana had many of the traits and symptoms of borderline personality disorder (BPD). She struggled with depression, bulimia, and insomnia most of her life.

Charles was never prepared or capable of providing the level of attention Diana wanted. Charles is stoic, a workaholic, introverted, and extremely loyal to the royal family. He normally performs royal family duties 7 days a week from early morning until late at night. He wasn't available to provide the level of attention Diana needed.

Being unfaithful wasn't their biggest problem. There was a lot more wrong in the marriage. I believe Charles grew very fond of Diana and they had happy moments before 1984. The relationship was crumbling by 1984 and increasingly toxic, both were miserable. I believe Charles was overwhelmed by Diana's self-destructive behaviors, he was sympathetic at first but became irritated. Especially since she refused therapy. Diana was moody and irrational, living with her was an emotional roller-coaster.

They informally separated in 1986. The toxicity in the relationship continued until the divorce. Diana had 8 or more affairs before the divorce was final. Some of her affairs were with married men. Most of her affairs didn't last very long. Apparently she had difficulty establishing and sustaining a long-term relationship with any man. Charles and Camilla have been together since 1986 and apparently have a successful relationship. They are soulmates. It's sad that the queen refused to approve their marriage in 1972.

@nicolemurphy2629 agree during the first 5 years. After that, it got ugly. There were a lot of outside influences that prompted Diana to want to hurt and undermine Charles and Camilla with her 1992 book and her 1995 BBC Panorama interview.

Seeing Harry on King Charles shoulders really makes me mad at Harry thinking back to him lying and saying how cold his father was , any dad that put's their child on their shoulder's like that would definitely give a hug to a child just being told his mother passed away .
Wow - what I see is Diana stuck with a cold, cold family. No one acknowledges her, looks her way, says hello, makes small talk, nothing, even though they are right next to her. Charles looking anywhere but at his young wife. The only friendly one was Fergie's father on the balcony. This is a happy occasion, not a funeral! Poor Diana, stuck with that lot. Didn't work out so well for Fergie, either, down the road.
Diana wanted to be a member of the royal family. It was her childhood dream.
Diana's childhood nickname was Duch, short for Duchess. She believed she was destined to marry into the royal family.

@@karlamccullough5319 I don't think that she expected love and attention from the royal family but she did expect her husband to appreciate and value her instead of being jealous. She wanted her husband to be faithful. She would have appreciated advice on how to handle the glare of the public and media at first. They didn't give her support or advice on anything - instead, they were quick to criticize and put her down. Diana had to navigate everything on her own - and she was naturally graceful and was a perfect match to be an unofficial ambassador for the UK. Unfortunately Charles was the prince who turned into a toad.

When Charles tried to advise Diana, she perceived his encouragement to follow the rules as criticism and mistreatment.
Diana had people working for her that provided guidance and advice. One of her private secretaries was handpicked by Charles. Patrick jephson was Diana's private secretary of 8 years.
Diana could have asked Ruth Sylvia Roche, Baroness Fermoy, who was a friend and confidante of The Queen Mother and Diana's maternal grandmother.
Diana struggled with mental problems. She saw herself as a victim and helpless. It wasn't the truth.
@@karlamccullough5319Sounds very familiar. I liked Diana and thought she had some very redeeming qualities but at the same time I could never have lived with her as a spouse. Nothing was ever enough and her constant need for attention and threats of self harm would wear anyone down. It was so easy to blame Charles because he wasn’t the one always crying and looking sad. Never mind many of those events were carefully planned and paps called to get the pics required to back her up. People should just stay out of other’s personal relationships.

I agree. I read a few articles about Diana's mental problems and she was very different to live with.
She was prone to mood swings, bulimia, self-mutilation, lying, and inattention. She had several of the traits and symptoms of
borderline personality disorder
(BPD).
I feel sorry for her and for the people who lived around her.
