What It's Like to Drive The Alpine Renault A110

  • This Particular a110 was built in 1969 and first registered in 1971.
Not a single detail of this Alpine A110S goes unnoticed as being a little quirky. From the 3 sets of headlights, to the interference of the steering column to reach the clutch pedal, this machine is definitely French.
The rear end is geared for a top speed of about 55mph in 5th gear making for an involved experience on the street.
The 1600cc rear mounted powerplant is free revving and provides a rewarding bark as it charges to redline.

Not enough (original) Alpine A110 videos on UA-cam so thanks for posting this Tedward! If you come to Europe, you really should try out the new Alpine A110 too. Aluminium construction, Double wishbone suspension (front & rear) and weighs 2400lbs. Dan Prosser (UK car journo from EVO, Pistonheads, Autocar) loved it so much that he bought one himself. Unlike the original, its mid-engined, so would be interesting to see someone do a head2head comparison video on both cars.

Loud engine, good looks, no power steering or brakes, manual gearbox. That is what makes you feel like you are having fun and going fast, the visceral feel is so high! Modern cars you just floor the pedal and everything happens, to get to an exciting level you have to be doing double the speed limit.

That’s no surprise. The company's founder, Jean Redele, always uses parts from Renault's series production to build his sports cars. And the most powerful engine, from the road production series, the 1600 SX, had a mere 110 hp. But that was enough with the low weight for a top speed of approx. 130 M / ph. We're talking about a time when the average European could be happy to have 75 horsepower under the hood ...

Not to get too sappy, but you’re playing an important role in preserving the culture. We are of a generation that-in large part-IS looking for the next M2 or GTR or Supra, but they are missing out on a world of classics and lesser-knowns. By you bringing some of them out and sharing the “drive,” I hope you’re able to add a bit of depth to the current car culture.

Not only that a perfectly restored Alpine would bring in up to 90,000 dollars in Europe today, but the feeling of being able to drive this rally legend is simply hard to describe . It is a light car, manual, the sound of the engine is rather on high note, the shocks are rigid, no wonder an american would be confused by it. It has been maufactured in Mexico under the brand Dinalpin, in Brazil under the name Interlagos, in Bulgaria under the name Bulgaralpine and in Spain by FASA Renault. Since none of these cars were procuced with the 1600cc engine, the car in this video is an original Alpine from Dieppe.

Nope, that's the pronounciation of the respective Sunbeam, then Tablbot cars in UK. The proper pronunciation for the A110 is "Alpeen" to underline it's French and distinct from the British eponymous car.

you Americans have no idea about real sports cars, do you??? don't blame you but V8 ain't racing my friend!!! yeah, your NASCAR is unique but prefer the American version of Formula One Gran Prix, the IndyCar Series!!! because that's real racing just like F1!!!

Had a poster of this car competing in the Monte Carlo rallye back in the day. The rubber shifter just goes with the old Renault rear engine drive trains. If you can find an old R8 Gordini its a similar experience
