Fix LSI SAS9207-8i Overheating In Desktop Computers

  • The LSi SAS cards are used by many people to expand the available sata ports in a normal desktop computer when running a home server. The only issue is these cards were designed to be in server chassis where there is a substantially higher airflow to keep everything cool.
In this video I will show you repasting the heatsink and adding a small 40mm fan and this combo has lowered the temperature of the card from 150'F down to around 85'F.
The issue with it running so hot at idle is many people have had problems with these cards in desktop situations where they are doing heavy disk access and the speed falls off since the card is overheating.
One item to remember is when adding the fan to the heatsink, you will block the PCIe slot below the card. In my case it was only a 1x PCIe slot that I was never going to use.

Did this yesterday with a 40 by 20mm fan. Took a few trips to the hardware store to get the screw lengths right. For those that opt to go with a 20mm thick fan, the screw is a M3, 30mm length. Long enough to get a rubber washer and a nut on the other end.

I just repurposed a larger heatsink by drilling two holes and mounting it with two screws and nuts on this model of card. It is a very cost effective way without buying expensive Noctua fans and the additional power and noise produced as a result.
Edit: Thumb up for the nylon screws very neat and safe way of mounting the fan and heatsink.

I was actually going to watercool my 8805 just for kicks, even bought the block, but I got lazy in addition to it just not making good sense- so I slapped a fan on it. I knew I would need one after reading just how much airflow the manufacturer recommended. They were asking for values that would make my PC sounds like a vacuum cleaner without its own independent fan. It was super easy to mount with those extra long rubber mounting pull thingies.

I've been running an LSI SAS2008 9200-8i with TrueNAS in a desktop for a while and kept getting disc errors and a degraded pool because one or two discs would be "faulted" and removed. There was no data in that pool (array of 4 ZFS2 discs) so I didn't really bother out of a lack of time to really invest in fixing it. I replaced "faulted" discs a couple of times but the new ones always faulted. I finally set aside some time to tinker with it after trying replacing the SATA cables and changing the SATA port. Always the same results. Checked the logs: Always the same two discs... Touched the heatsink and burned my fingers. Watched this video. Shut down, pulled the card, removed the heatsink, cleaned and re-greased it & reassembled. Had a spare Noctura fan and attached it with two 3mm socket head cap screws down into the fins of the heatsink but with two rubber washers giving me ~3mm spacing between the fan and heatsink (which I think will give better air flow). Since reassembling everything, the system has been up longer without error than ever before. Thanks for being a catalyst!
PS: Cleaning aged heatsink compound does not seem possible with isopropyl alcohol but "Goof Off" worked great. I imagine acetone would work too -- only in a well-ventilated space!

well done m8 , sure this will help a lot, but you add another problem; the slot next to it is unusable due to the fan, it might be just good enough to add only new paste and place a 80-120mm fan on the end of the card, that will help cooling the other cards too. Or; find a bigger heatsink with same thickness but twice the height or so.

its amazing how even a small low speed fan makes a big drop on temps.

    • @madelectronengineering
      @madelectronengineering  4 роки тому +2

It does that because the ic under the heat sink only consumes around 10 watts. A little airflow goes a long way with these, that's why they had no problem keeping cool without a fan in a server case as they are internal wind tunnels.

I bought an LSI SAS 9300-161 hba bus card that has a larger heat fin than this card you're working on so I'm going to find a way to finagle a 80mm Noctua (I have a box of them already) but this card doesn't have the brass retainers holding the heat fin on like yours. It has 3 screw/nut holding it on with little springs I'm assuming to evenly apply pressure. And I cant even get close to getting 2 holes to line up.

    Rotate the cpu cooler 90°
I have a 7700k that runs 5.2GHz, I have my NH-D15 air cooler pushing air vertically from top to bottom due to RAM clearance issues. If you oriented yours to flow from bottom to top, it would pull a large amount of air around the card and cool it.

MAD what size screws did you use? I love this application. I am using a standard fan screwed to the case but would like the space for a hard drive so this solution would give me back the space. i am guessing 25mm since the fan is 10mm and the heatsink looks like another 10mm.

Dumb question, but what's the operating temp for those Nylon screws? I'm worried they might melt if the temps are really that high...Is there really that much of a risk of shorting if I were to use metal screws and nuts

Nylon melts around 220C, so the chip will burst into flames before the screws melt.

for those just reading this post. 3pin fans use the 3rd wire to signal power adjustment by sending the speed of the rotation. Modern motherbords now use 4pin fans because the added 4th wire allows for PWM control. Noise is reduced most of the time while the 3pin fans the noise is steady and constant. It provides a longer lifespan because the fan rotates at the speed required. PWM provides automatic control thru the hardware

    • @madelectronengineering

Remember these cards are designed to be in a server chassis with a ton of airflow going past them, this airflow is not present in a desktop case, which is why this mod is basically required.

LSI all run hot. 70-90c. Mine never slow down though. my 9286cv-8e runs the same at 65c as it does at 88c. No difference in speeds airflow is the key, I think the battery and chip maybe last longer cooler. I know the chips have a thermal shutdown, not sure about throttling, it could be corruption and resends and not throttling.

It might just be better to buy a new heatsink. You can even get a full copper one for about 10-12£ you'll need to drill the holes tho.
