eBay Return Fraud | exploring an Inspur LSI SAS2308 SAS controller

  • In this video I'm sharing with you guys a case of eBay return fraud that recently happened and exploring an Inspur LSI HBA SAS controller that I received. eBay return fraud is a fact of life if you've been an eBay seller for a while. It has happened at the ART of SERVER store several times in the past, but fortunately is a very small percentage of all people who visit my store.
    In this case, someone bought a genuine LSI 9201-8i HBA controller and immediately wanted to return the card. Upon receiving the returned package, I realized they did not send back the 9201-8i card I had sent them. Instead, they sent back some package from China with an Inspur LSI HBA and some cables. So, I thought I would take this opportunity to checkout this Inpsur HBA that I've never seen first hand before and share that with you guys. As it turns out, this Inspur card is a LSI SAS2308 controller and has a unique design.
    eBay return fraud happens, but in the larger picture of things, it's a tiny fraction of all the transactions at the ART of SERVER store. The vast majority of people visiting my store are honest, good people and I love helping you guys with your server builds. Your awesomeness drowns out the bad, and I very much appreciate your support! Thank you! :-)

    My worst buy /sell transaction was buying a keyboard from someone who I thought I knew through Facebook and who I'd given positive vibes to when he was pretty ill.
    Basically he ripped me off to the tune of £450 for a dead DX-7 keyboard and swore red was yellow - it just did NOT work. Asking me to pay "freinds and family" should have been enough of a warning, but trust blinkered me.As he said "caveat emptor" - If I ever meet him, he will be eating pavement.
    Well done turning a bad experience into something of value in this video.

    I have one of those cards in my machine. Since there is almost pretty close to no options for cheap/budget DIY server products in Australia. This card was half the price of the others. I have not had an issue with this card. I put a 40mm fan on the heatsink, it keeps it nice and cool. I do think it is low of the buyer to send that back to you.

    I just saw your video and checked my card that I ordered in December and yes it had that funny gray tape covering the logo which I removed and discovered that the card was a FASTPCB. I thought I was getting a Fujitsu 9211-8i but that is not the case. This happened to me on ebay as well, I sold a ~200 dollar item, the day they received it they opened a return, the package going out was 15 x 12 x 8 (larger item) what I received back was a plastic bag with random junk in it weighing about the same as the package I sent. I opened a case with ebay and of course they sided with the buyer as they always do (was a new ebay account as well).

      Tell them not item you sent period and they return a completely different one as return fraud? Tell them also they open case as changed mind. A good supervisor will put two to two together. As for the covering of logos, there is a sad trend in the US of them ceasing packages with logos as "counterfeit".
    Apple really loves to enforce this on Apple branded refurbished screens, calling them imported fake parts because they didn't authorize the importing of it, even if they were the original manufacturer, they just went to China to be fixed for whatever reason.
    So that is why stuff going to the US has logos covered to get through customs.

      Louis Rossmann touches in this in a video titled: "Apple & Customs STOLE my batteries, that they won't even provide to AASPs." is the title of the video.
      Since YT hates links, at least giving the title should make it hit when you search for it at the very least, and you can read the US Customs letter.
      I have also seen this with Airsoft guns, where in the rest of the world, they can bear the Colt logo, but they are either removed, painted over or covered to enter the US due to this customs policy.

      @@ArtofServer I can attest to this in the clothing industry. Fake clothing is often seized based on trademark infringement of the manufacturer's logo, as that is really the only "protected" element of the item. But yes, I have also seen it used by manufacturers to control the movement of genuine goods between different markets. Not just in the US, most countries have trademark enforcement treaties of some kind.

      I actually had that happen once and buyer screwed up thinking I sold him the item. I sold him a solder station and he returned to me a Rigol dp832 power supply that was defective? Needless to say I saw the feedback and he opened a return at the same time I knew he had the wrong seller as he mentioned defective power supply in feedback? Once received the item it was a Rigol dp832 power supply.
      I did contact him when I saw the feedback before receiving the item and he still assumed I sold him the power supply? Well did get it and sure enough was a like new Rigol dp832. I did contact him with pictures and showing the item I sold him. He still was convinced I was the seller that sold him the power supply which was worth way more then the solder station. eBay removed feedback and I got to keep the power supply, which did after waiting a couple months just in case the buyer wanted it back once he realized the mistake? I ended up repairing it and put it to use.
      Still to this day never heard back from that buyer?

    I hope you were able to dispute the theft and keep the money from the sale.
    As far as the tape over the logos... Louis Rossman touched on this years ago in several videos. The tape is there to cover the log and help slip past customs. Apple, in the context of his video, claimes all parts with their logo are clones, even if those parts are proven to be removed from trash and sold as used. Part of the anti-right to repair tactic, if you can't get parts, you'll buy new.

    Regarding Supermicro cards, what do you think of the AOC-SASLP-MV8? I have two that've been running like champs going on a decade now. My only concern is that they get FIERY HOT. They also require a beta Windows driver that was never officially released to support drives over 4 TB.
    I tried posting the Supermicro link, but UA-cam auto-deleted my comment.

    • @ArtofServer
      @ArtofServer  Рік тому

      I don't have a lot of experience with those cards. They are not based on LSI controller chipsets, but rather a Marvell 6480 chipset. It's also very old, being a SAS-1 controller, and PCIe x4 only. If they are still working for you, then that's fine. But if you ever need to replace them, I think I would get something a little more modern.

    • @fredleggett923
      @fredleggett923 Рік тому

      @@ArtofServer There is a newer version of the card (the SASLP2), but it's probably old hat by now, too.
      TBH, I'm at a real crossroads and I don't know which fork to take. I have an old (back then it was brand new) Norco box that I modified to accept a large Corsair AIO. It worked out really well in the beginning, but I've lost at least six high-capacity drives in the last 6-8 months that have, according to SMART data, cooked themselves. I now highly suspect that my modifications made the Norco into a slow-bake oven and I'm going to have to get rid of it, especially since chia has permanently spiked drive prices into the stratosphere.
      Problem is whatever I get as a replacement will be directly attached to my TV in my living room as a media box, so noise is a critical factor. I can't have a system running Tinnitus-inducing Delta fans, as I already have a case of constant ear ringing and don't need an exacerbating factor. And all of the server-type chassis I've examined via Google images look to REQUIRE Delta or Delta-like fans since they force drives to sit in a tight metal cage with almost no air gaps for heat dissipation.
      As such, I'm seriously thinking of just getting a standard mid-tower PC case with an external drive bay solution, like the 10-bay Sabrent docking station (DS-UCTB [again, I'd post the link, but UA-cam would just delete my entire comment]), and completely ditch the idea of thinking I can run enterprise-grade hardware, especially on their own rightful and justifiable terms. I know various outlets have really, REALLY nice Supermicro chassis on offer, like the 846, but its placement in my living room is non-negotiable.
      So, uh, any advice?

    I actually own this card, my first time putting it in I noticed errors up the wazoo on all the drives luckily I caught it before actually using it, So I can tell you the cables are trash (or at least mine where) replacing the SAS cables and you are correct the thing gets hot, theres a couple videos of people modding fans onto them and thats what I did, I also flashed it with what I think is the 20.00.70 firmware and the BIOS with it and its been a great little card. I dont know too much about this stuff but yea I grabbed mine on aliexpress so I was fully expecting a knock off figured Id start with that to make sure its right for my use case

      glad this card is working for you. i don't necessarily think it is a "knock off" ... there are many OEMs that make their own SAS controllers based on the LSI/Broadcom chips. This includes Fujitsu, Supermicro, and Dell. HP/IBM/Lenovo seems to just use the LSI reference design and put a sticker on them. I think as long as you are cooling this card with enough airflow, it should work fine.

      Not sure why you are asking this question under this video? This video was NOT about counterfeit or fake HBA cards. That said, in my experience, the counterfeit cards usually are lacking in quality, such as smaller heatsinks, cheaper conductive materials, etc. And that's only what is visible, so who knows what other components they used sub-standard quality parts on that are not easily visually identifiable? Do they work? Yes, they usually do initially, although often flashed with incorrect firmware and using incorrect PCIe IDs, so they sort of work. But my biggest concern is probably their reliability and longevity, considering the cheaper components used. But since I don't use them, I don't have any data to share. The card is this video is not a counterfeit or fake card, it was just an Inspur card that I was not too familiar with.
