I believe that all of us first thought, whether this was scripted, but it can't be. It wouldn't serve any purpose for the Oscar Gala. It got attention, but wrong kind. People there were genuinely surprised and shocked, and Will Smith crying at the stage, the script would have gone too far. If it was scripted, Smith would have walked to stage near Rock, pretended to be angry, and then they would have made a joke together to show it was all scripted.

Chris's joke is not funny because of Jada Pinkett Smith's situation. Jada suffers from a medical condition called alopecia. Alopecia results in unnatural hair loss; hair falls out in clumps and the hair doesn't grow back. There is limited medical treatment to make the hair grow back. Chris's joke is that Jada can play GI Jane because she doesn't have any hair. The joke is making fun of someone who has a medical problem.
The fact that Denzel Washington and Tyler Perry comforted Will after the incident means not everyone is not on Chris's side with this matter.

As I wrote in my responses, as human beings, we will respond emotionally when we are being attacked, criticized, or believe that our feelings are not being validated. The question I have is how we would behave if we were in Will's circumstance?
I teach ethics. As I tell my students, we would like to think we would do the "right" thing but in reality, we don't know how we would respond under certain circumstances. We would like to think we would do the "right" thing but we don't know until we are faced with those circumstances.
