The blame lies with the studio who funded the film as they submit the actors/actresses into whichever category they feel they will most likely gain enough recognition to receive a nomination. I also think Vikander in The Danish Girl should have been submitted in the lead actress category but it wasn't to be. Rooney Mara should have been submitted in lead as well, but the studio didn't want her and Cate Blanchett to go against each other for Carol.
Her performance throughout Testament of Youth is one of the best and rarest I've seen an actress reach the level of commitment to a rule and the ability to evolve the character and still manage to stay in it, that alone granted her an Oscar in the future.. And about time she won it! Absolutely well deserved...

She is supposed to be in Lead category and Kate Winslet should bag her second Oscar. The Oscar sometimes had it wrong in nominations in the past year just to a have a win with a specific person. Best example was. Tatum O Neal which is clearly a lead which denied Linda Blair her Oscar, Dianne Wiest in Bullets over broadway which denied Jennifer Tilly and Uma Thurman. Ugh. Academy is obviously not playing fair and get influenced by the campaigns of the studio or the producers.

I've just finished watching the Danish Girl. The performances of all the actors was outstanding but Alicia stepped it up even further. Man, she was beautiful but also heartbreaking to watch. A very well deserved Oscar 👏
Jennifer Jason Leigh's character was far more deserving as it was more complicated. Her character needed more work and the result deserves that award. Alicia is good, but not that good for an Oscar at this time.

Rooney Mara and Alicia Vikander were both leading and Vikander totally pales in comparison to Mara's nuanced, subtle performance. I don't think that Mara should have won (it's such an obvious case of category fraud) but if they really wanted to go for a leading performance in the supporting category, why for the weaker one? Vikander's performance in The Danish Girl is a weakly written suffering wife. She has probably two good scenes, that's it. Mara gives her character a total arc and shines in every scene she's in. In the end, I think Jennifer Jason Leigh should have won in this category and Mara should have been nominated for lead (she would have been a very deserving winner). Vikander would have been a deserving nominee and winner for Ex Machina, though.

I also guess that many voters voted for Alicia Vikaner not only because of The Danish Girl, but also for Ex Machina (although she lost the Globe and BAFTA when she was nominated for Ex Machina in Supporting). While I found her totally deserving in Ex Machina, it still bothers me that she won for her role in The Danish Girl, not only because she is just as lead as Mara in in Carol, but also because I felt like the role (like the whole script of The Danish Girl) was weakly written and so inferior to Winslet, Leigh and Mara. But of course they didn't want to give an award to a performance in a (very good) Sci-Fi-movie and prefer a Tom Hooper movie.

CAROL was one of the biggest snubs for Best Picture and Best Director this year. Mara and Vikander should have been under the Best Actress category-don't know what happened there-(BSA's still a great position though) and she (Rooney Mara) should have won that category [the Weinsteins campaigned her for] nonetheless.

Best example was. Tatum O Neal which is clearly a lead which denied Linda Blair her Oscar, Dianne Wiest in Bullets over broadway which denied Jennifer Tilly and Uma Thurman. Ugh. Academy is obviously not playing fair and get influenced by the campaigns of the studio or the producers.
Kate Winslet was AMAZING in "Steve Jobs". One of her best performances! I loved Alicia Vikander in "The Danish Girl" but she was clearly LEAD, as was Rooney Mara in "Carol"

In my opinion Rooney deserved this award more (she won Best Actress in Cannes for her performance for Christ's sake) ! But congratulations to Alicia (although she won for the wrong movie). I really hope Rooney will win Oscar in the next few years. Her Audrey Hepbernesque performance in Carol was so enchanting !
I've just finished watching the Danish Girl. The performances of all the actors was outstanding but Alicia stepped it up even further. Man, she was beautiful but also heartbreaking to watch. A very well deserved Oscar 👏

Jennifer Jason Leigh's character was far more deserving as it was more complicated. Her character needed more work and the result deserves that award. Alicia is good, but not that good for an Oscar at this time.

Rooney Mara and Alicia Vikander were both leading and Vikander totally pales in comparison to Mara's nuanced, subtle performance. I don't think that Mara should have won (it's such an obvious case of category fraud) but if they really wanted to go for a leading performance in the supporting category, why for the weaker one? Vikander's performance in The Danish Girl is a weakly written suffering wife. She has probably two good scenes, that's it. Mara gives her character a total arc and shines in every scene she's in.
In the end, I think Jennifer Jason Leigh should have won in this category and Mara should have been nominated for lead (she would have been a very deserving winner). Vikander would have been a deserving nominee and winner for Ex Machina, though.
+Sabrina Ross totally agree, actually this Oscar is for Ex-Machina, this is how I understand it. Rooney hadn't a supporting role last year, so if she had won it would be a super clear category fraud.
I also guess that many voters voted for Alicia Vikaner not only because of The Danish Girl, but also for Ex Machina (although she lost the Globe and BAFTA when she was nominated for Ex Machina in Supporting).
While I found her totally deserving in Ex Machina, it still bothers me that she won for her role in The Danish Girl, not only because she is just as lead as Mara in in Carol, but also because I felt like the role (like the whole script of The Danish Girl) was weakly written and so inferior to Winslet, Leigh and Mara. But of course they didn't want to give an award to a performance in a (very good) Sci-Fi-movie and prefer a Tom Hooper movie.

CAROL was one of the biggest snubs for Best Picture and Best Director this year. Mara and Vikander should have been under the Best Actress category-don't know what happened there-(BSA's still a great position though) and she (Rooney Mara) should have won that category [the Weinsteins campaigned her for] nonetheless.
