Love the video. Have lots of vintage jewelry I repurpose. On your pen puddling, you could use a toothpick or a old needle to spread it into the cracks and creavices. Just a thought. Also watched your venetion wedding glass beads video. Loved it - I am a jewelry designer and you just gave me more info for content for when I make repurposed jewelry. Thank you.

Thank you so much!! Im so glad you found my channel. As far as vintage jewelry, if it has a bright shiny appearance its more than likely plated with rhodium as it does not tarnish like silver does. Matter of fact after this video i found rhodium is a really rare element and used alot to plate jewelry, so maybe i shouldnt have used an oil pen on it 😅 Also around the 1930'a is when rhodium started to be in use this way.

Can you please tell me what you use to try to keep the gems in place? I want use clear nail polish to coat the rhinestones, in hopes that it would add as an extra barrier, to keep them in the jewelry - any guidance would be much appreciated. Thank you so much ☺️

Hi thank you for watching! I use GS-hypo cement to glue rhinestones into jewelry, it has a very fine tip so you can make sure to only get glue where you want it to go :)

Why are some rhinestones foiled back and other are not? Love ❤️ your channel

    • @Hannah-FleursDeMontagne

They are foiled to reflect more light and/or add color, they are normally used when the setting has a closed backing and no light can shine through. Thank you Carol!!

Have you ever run into a vintage magnet piece where the magnet has disintegrated into a powder? And follow up question either way, how would you go about repairing that would you think/recommend?

    • @Hannah-FleursDeMontagne
      @Hannah-FleursDeMontagne  11 місяців тому +1

Thanks for watching! I’ve come across some magnetic clasps that have started to disintegrate and just replace the clasp. Not sure how to fix it unless you take another magnet to pull the powder away and then maybe are able to replace it?

@@Hannah-FleursDeMontagne sounds like great advice! 😊 The powder feels a little too "this is probably not safe to handle" 🤣. I have a multi strand vintage cobalt blue AB crystal necklace that deserves to be saved so I will follow the logical recommendation to replace the clasp - thanks so much!!!

You could also pop the stones out from the back without damaging the setting on the front.

Good idea! I’d just have to use a different tool with foil back stones as not to scratch off the foil. Thank you so much for watching!

I am looking for a resource for vintage replacement stones. I have a Coro Pegasus brooch missing a blue stone but I can’t find a match. Someone on FB suggested that I ask you. Any help is appreciated. It’s a hard blue to match.

Check out MrStonesVintage on Etsy for most rhinestones and unfoiled stones. You can also do a general search on Etsy or Ebay, type the color , shape and size so for example "blue oval faceted 8x3mm". I buy most of my vintage findings and stones there!

I think this turned out looking new but I would stress to everyone that vintage jewelry should for the most part be left alone- adding stones is ok but I guess I’m just a purest- it’s like refinishing an antique dresser- it’s usually best to leave the original finish and let the patina be the character and charm time creates. But, it depends on the piece- if it’s completely ruined- might as well make something out of nothing. It’s just a shame when people don’t realize when they might be ruining something glorious.

    • @Hannah-FleursDeMontagne

I agree that most pieces really don't need anything done to it, I don't encourage people to just rip apart and destroy antiques and vintage pieces. Most pieces need maybe a light cleaning and left as is. They also may need a few stones replaced and there's plenty of options to buy new old stock stones. I think my bracelet looks great with the "new" old stones, but to each their own :) Thanks for your input and for watching!

@@Hannah-FleursDeMontagne I agree- you made it look much better- I guess the pen is where I’m like hmmm- it does look good but if I bought a piece thinking that it was the original finish then found out it was just pen- I’d be disappointed. I’m not meaning to come down on you- I just think some people don’t know better (not talking about you here) and may take an old piece- here’s an example- there was a person who found a 1930’s wooden Scottie pen and it had some paint that had worn off here and there- she said- I’m going to repaint those spots and make it look new- it’s the last thing that a collector would want with a valuable pin like that. You want all the original paint - whatever is left- even if there’s chips gone. People don’t want ‘new’ with antiques. On the flip side- if the item is just completely broken to bits and you are remaking it into something new- ok or if you are just adding a rhinestone- great. Hope I didn’t offend.

@@silvergirl7810 I didn’t take offense, you made a really good point. There is a fine line between actually refinishing something that’s in terrible shape and devaluing a piece by redoing it. I’ve actually thought about how I used pen on that bracelet and because it was more than likely rhodium plated I probably shouldn’t have used the oil based pen and just replaced the stones. Thanks so much for your thoughts, it’s definitely something worth taking about!
