Expression by Sylvia Humble, at Nanaimo Ukulele Festival, May 24, 2024

Expression is a song I wrote this year, because I think the world needs more singing out loud imperfectly; for me, singing is a human birthright (I denied myself the joy for way too long); it is about joy and connection, not perfection.
This is my first call-and-response song, meant to be interactive. I use a loop pedal (I call it “the Sylvettes”) to create harmonies, and this is my first time looping harmonies live in a performance. It wasn’t perfect, but that’s what the song is about!
I was thrilled to be the opening performer at the 2024 Nanaimo Ukulele Festival! The audience was great and many sang along, which makes a performance way more connective and satisfying, I feel!
My looper is the Boss RC-500 model. It’s fun! I have a lot to learn but it gets easier with practice.
