- The Andy Griffith Show is a classic TV show that showcases idyllic Mayberry. You can visit the real Mayberry at Mount Airy, North Carolina. We stayed at the Mt. Airy Hampton Inn, ate at The Loaded Goat restaurant and Snappy's Lunch. The ride in Barney's Squad Car was a family favorite with the wonderful guide, Roger. We loved seeing all the memorabilia from the show at the Andy Griffith Museum and walking down Main Street where you can purchase souvenirs, see Floyd's Barber Shop, and imagine a simpler time where Barney, Thelma Lou, Opie, or Miss Crump might turn the corner any minute!
It takes about half a day to visit all the sites in Mount Airy so it's a great addition to a family road trip to North Carolina or southern Virginia. Our family vacation was Mt. Airy--then Appomattox---then St. Johns Church and White House of the Confederacy in Richmond--then presidential houses Monticello and Montpelier---then staying on Walton's Mountain. What a fun video! I have lived near Raleigh all my life but have never spent the day in Mayberry. It is now on my list of places to go visit. 😊 How is your knee? I just had my left knee replacement on June 10 and am doing great.

We loved it!
My husband and I celebrated one of our anniversaries there and we had a great time. Seen most of the things you did. We also did a ghost walk and it was very fascinating. At one point this car pulled up and this lady asked if we were enjoying ourselves and it was Thelma Lou. She let me take her picture…I was so excited. We ate at Snappy’s too…he had the pork chop sandwich and loved it. I can’t remember what I had…lol
How neat to have met Thelma Lou!!! It was such a wonderful trip. It seemed like life just slowed down at Mayberry.

Betty Lynn died Saturday after a short illness in Mount Airy, North Carolina, where she lived in a retirement home. She had moved to the birthplace of Andy Griffith in 2006- now home to the Andy Griffith Museum, where she regularly signed autographs and delighted fans -
