- How to remove shingles to do a roof repair. It doesn't matter if you have 3 tab shingles or the newer dimensional shingles, also called architectural shingles. The repair process is basically the same. Whether your shingles are damage from wind hail or any other damage, start with removing the damaged shingles with a flat bar. Make sure to remove any nails that are sticking up. Then reinstall the new shingles. Make sure any of the compromised seal strips get a small dab of sealer, otherwise they could blow out again.
I used the AJC mag hatchet to do this repair. I use it for mast all repair work I do!
It is definitely worth the cost! It will speed up your repair and save your fingers from being smashed! It will also help from smashing the last shingle that needs nailed, saving you from damaging more shingles.

Thanks for the vids. I hate roofing and I seem to see more crappy previous roofing work than any other trade for some reason. You do nice work. Maybe get into doing sidewall work to carry you through the winter.
You are right I see a lot of shoddy workmanship when it comes to roofing! When you say sidewall work, are you talkin about siding?
I like how you resealed the ones you broke the tar Strip on too. A lot of people do not take time to do that. That's quality work there
Just got an AJC Man what a nice change, Thanks again for the great tutorial.
Good work. Those 3 tab shingles though you should nail right below the tar Strip. Those 3 tabs with the solid tar Strip when they seal, water can get stuck behind the tar Strip and ride it across and start getting to the nails and possibly cause a leak over time.
My grandfather invented the roofing hatchet.
Super great video thanks
Makes me miss roofing. I did it for 10 years. Now I haul mail.
Thanks for the video man.
Now I know how to roof I could do my three gables in the summertime.
Perfect instructional video. Great job!
I have to do that this weekend. I've been putting it off.
Excellent work you make it look so easy
Quick and clean. Subscribed. Very motivational, cant wait to roof tomorrow!
like watching you work
Binge watching and liking like a mofo!! We have nothing like this in our roofs here in Spain.
Thank you I appreciate that! Let me know if you have any ideas for future topics?
Good job!
Great work, I'm looking at DIYing some repairs this weekend and yours are among the best videos on the topic. I'd be curious if you'd do a video on roof safety and steep roofs, as well as non-roof topics you work in, eg framing or siding.
Thank you I really appreciate the feedback! I do want to shoot a lot of videos around safety on steep roofs. it's just hard to schedule to have the time to do it as well as editing the videos. Thanks again and be safe!
Like to see a video on all the uses you get out of a roofing hatchet
I've always felt buying tools good investment
I'm getting one
Nice Job, thank you
Seeing as you're working on a gable end, are those 2-in nails showing from below?
I want hatchet is there a reference way to order love
why did you leave a broken tab on the start ? and where's the starter for the rake ?
You don’t put a starter up the gable edge?
I love that hammer
What's the kind of caulk you use?
Those shingles had their oun place in time .I also RIP off a lot of them old jet shingles I call them .they were the beginning of designer shingles
My old boss years ago bought this thing I don't know if you ever seen one for shingles .it was this long thing across and two nails on top ridge .you lined you shingles across it nailed them and went up another section .I could not believe my old boss actually wasted money on this thing .he new what I thought with my laughter so hard I tears in my eyes
Same boss pealing plastic of the old shingles. That's when I new he was a meat head lol
Then to impress him dad he did big job price chopper morrisville. Banged it out so fast I was not there but latter it was known the plastic vapor barrier was skipped on a mechanical fastened roof and he learned the importance of it .what a mess omg

How do you work with a shingle repair on a newly installed roof where the seals are bonded really tight. It seems like those are almost impossible to repair because you cannot lift the shingles above the damaged ones to pull the nails out to make the repair.
you have to be extremely careful splitting that top row. Even if it means pulling the seal strip from the headlap. It will lift the granules with it. When your repair is done, seal them down. Word of caution, you need to make sure you don't actually slice the shingle clean through. Paying close attention to any key ways. It is a pain in the ass for sure, but can be done.
@@GrandRoofingInc I was hoping you had some magical method that made it easy! Darn. Do you typically charge more for these kinds of repairs?
Definitely! Whenever you're looking to give an estimate on a repair, typically you're up there. So I will just try gently with my fingers to get an idea how sealed they are. If they are sealed extremely tight you can expect it to go slower or possibly run into trouble.
When a hand hammered nail makes a a little indentation in the shingle pulling the material down - is this the correct depth of the nail or is it a slightly overdriven nail?
I thought your supposed to nail under the tar line 5 inches from the bottom and not above the tar strip
With asphalt shingles you want your nails to be above the exposure line. There is a slight margin above or below that you can safely put them. You don't want them too low to be exposed from the shingle above. You also don't want them too high. With 3 tab you have to be cautious on how far left and right you place them from the keyway. With that said it's not so much where the nail is in relation to the tar. You do however want them to be close to the tar so it's fastening that section of shingle down when the shingle above seals to the tar it's not going to give.. I have had people tell me in the years past I was doing it wrong and that the tar strip is to seal the nail. That is completely incorrect. The seal strip is to hold the shingle above down.
@@GrandRoofingInc the instructions I read it says to nail under the tare and above the kewway between those two
Have you ever worked on a single wide trailer with metal roof
BRO ITS OVERHANG U SHOULD USE 3/4 NAILS
stilleto
Hey brother DeWalt made a really good roofing nailer
Battery operated
$70..i don't think even Thor's hammer cost that much...
Once you've used it you'll understand that it's worth it
What's the point of the hatchet? What are you chopping? I've still never seen anyone who owned one.
This is extremely wrong. You do NOT cut shingles in the center sections of a slope, improper and illegal in most places! If a tab is damaged or missing, you remove the entire shingle and replace it, not cut out the bad part and leave the good like you did. You’ve now changed the offset of the shingles and made them different from the rest of the roof, increasing the number of potential entry points for water and increasing the likelihood of the shingles being damaged by wind again. Cuts should only be made on the edges, valleys, hips, and ridges.
