Too many lame RAMS

- It's not quite as slick as the KVK that Graeme uses on the Hoof GP but the Te Pari Racewell is great for trimming feet..... especially on the big rams.
In this video we show you some of the boys and some of the poor feet that they currently have!
We need to get on top of our feet problems

ABOUT ME
I’m 33 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 850 breeding ewes.
I shore over 19,000 sheep this season in the UK and have my own shearing run which lets you see many different farms in the summer months.
A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
I watched a few farm vlogs on UA-cam and decided I could have a go and now here we are!
Thanks for watching my videos and please subscribe if you want to see more in future.
That big teaser ram was a well behaved boy! Even though his foot was sore he didn't fuss about it being picked up and trimmed. Felt bad for that one ram with the really bad foot, good thing the lads have got Cammy! !
I follow a lady in Ireland who farms Zwartbles Sheep they are a very docile and friendly breed
Good thing I don't farm sheep.. I'd have kept that black teaser ram as a breeder..
The lady in Ireland with the Zwartbles sheep uses the fleece. It is spun and woven into lovely blankets which she sells. Apparently the wool is particularly good for this.
She also farms organically I have learnt so much from this channel very interesting and she explains it so well.
Her sheep rarely get worms because of all the wild herbs in the pastures but she does get things like scald and fly strike of course
@@marleneclough3173what's the name of her channel? It sounds interesting. 😊
@dreamcatcher3861 Zwartbles Ireland Suzanna Crampton she takes lovely pictures of the flowers wildlife trees etc and her garden she is a real regenerative farmer and talks about how much wildlife has returned since she is doing this. It is her families farm and she sells sheep and wool and blankets woven from the wool. Apparently the wool is especially good for wearing. Also because she uses no sprays etc the sheep eat all kinds of plants they would not otherwise and are virtually parasite free be ause of the herbs they eat!
The new thinking about not trimming the infected hoof does not take account of the fact that the necrophorus organisms are anaerobic so the bacteria will persist if the infected area is not exposed to the air. I think the rams would definitely benefit from regular foot bathing rather than over use of antibiotics.
Yeah I'm starting to think that no trimming just prolongs the problem and allows reoccurance of the issues!
@@TheSheepGametrimming is the way to go from what I've seen from Vet shows.
Loved seeing Jock with his tractor. Won’t be long before he’s helping you!
It’s amazing how we can see him growing up from video to video.
He's a fearless young lad. We city slickers tend to see a rough farm upbringing for children as dirty and dangerous, while forgetting we all lived like that not long ago. There's something to be said for learning about their world rather than overprotecting them from it.
That ram with the white line problem looks like he warranted a visit from the Hoof GP. Thanks to the many farming UA-cam channels, I’m grateful to be better informed as to all the different things necessary to bring food to my family’s table.
I do wonder how well your Scottish Mule or Cheviot Mule ewes deliver lambs sired by the big continental rams. I know twins is the ideal, and wanting good growth rates is also important - but do those Texel sired lambs need assistance being born? I marvel at the decisions farmers make every day, planning for the future and dealing with daily surprises.
Hi Pat, one of the best things about mules is how easy they lamb. Just have to get the nutrition right before lambing!
Great video, love hearing jock chatting away, such a happy boy
I had a who,e paragraph and I pressed something wrong and lost it all Its wonderful how you keep up with all the sheep illnesses, especially the feet. Little Jock is helping you today😂 and he’s just adorable. And here comes Angus in the carriage. Have a great day❤️👍
Thanks Barbara!
It’s interesting to see the day to day “maintenance “ of the tups thanks for showing us ❤
Another great family video Cammy/Lizzy and the boys.I liked trimming feet back in the day but alas its outdated now a bit like me,looking forward to the next Tup video Take care.
It's wonderful how the Te Pari saves you from the hard graft of catching those big rams.
Always work to be done. God bless your family. Love the videos.
I could watch this all day
With all the rain you get I am so surprised you don't get more hoof rot. No tops or not enough, no lambs or bad scans.
Need a visit from the hoof GP! Good luck with the tup buying
😂😂😂
Great video Cammy aye it’s getting near that time again when the boys meet the girls 👌
Thank you cammy & Lizzy ❤❤
It was to meet your rams. Thanks, Cammy!
You may want to consider the battery operated hoof trimmers that Sandi Brock has. She loves them and they stay quite sharp.
Cammy simply needs a spring to make them operate, just like the spring you get with garden secateurs.
Sand's are great. I don't think we do enough to justify them though!
she thought the same thing until she got them, and once the ease of maintaining their feet with the battery shears was shown, she kicked herself not getting some sooner, youve got the handling system to make it easy too with the tilting race@@TheSheepGame
@@SylviaAlcatrazzthe difference is that Sandi has an intense farm and her sheep are always indoors and on pack so they don’t get worn down naturally so she trims every sheep a couple of times a year, much more that Cammy is likely to.
It comes down to the simple cost Vs utility. I have no idea what the difference in price is and everybody is going to have different things in their own equation.
Oh Jock you melt this Grandma's ❤
That evil boy giggle my grandson has one too !
Great video !
Thank you for sharing !
👏😀❤️
Hi Cammy, I have just bought some Zwarble ewes can't believe how quiet and good natured they are. There going on a Texel x Charolaise tup see what we end up with. Love the vlog 👍
Thanks Simon! Good luck with them!
I never knew there were so many different breeds of sheep. I like the ones with the big square heads but the ones that have heads like Bull Terriers are pretty cool.
I see Jock drives like you Cammy 😂
Hope you get some nice new tupps without breaking the bank. 😊👍👍
Thanks Cammy.❤️🇦🇺🏴
I so enjoy your videos. I have gone back and watched from the beginning. Your channel has grown so much in the last four years, congratulations! I love seeing wee jock! What a cutie! When will you go back and check on the rams? How long will it take for the antibiotics to work? Just curious.
Thanks Barabara! About a week and u see a huge difference! 😁
Still waiting on a That'll doooooooo Maggie! , jumper. Maybe with her doing a victory roll on the back. I'm sure it would be a best seller.Hope you'll try an ile de france tup. Much better than a texel, IMO, especially if you are considering keeping replacement ewe lambs. But great for terminal lambs, too.
Sorry to see that.. hope all lambs mend soon! Thanks for sharing!
The blue texels look great!
Sandy Brock (Sheepishly Me) trims the sheep's feet on a regular basis. She has electric shears to make the job easier.
One of her favorite (retired) ewes recently passed away from a case of foot rot that got away from her. Ruby was being treated at the time & was improving.
I saw that, very sad. She's had a hard time of it recently.
10/10 pedicure skills Cammy.
I do wonder about the cost of teasers, vs the time and effort for sheep IUDs, watching Sandy Brock do her ewes seems like such a lot of work compared to chucking a teaser into a field. Obviously its about what works for the individual farmer.
You have maybe made a a bit of a rod for your own back by choosing the biggest sheep you can get as teasers, 4 shetlands or mayo blackies wouldn't need nearly as much food/care, but they are so much more wild.
I met the friendliest zwartable tup at the Westmoreland show. He was mugging every passer by for fuss, just loved getting scratches. They're lovely chill sheep.
U are right i should have chose some hebrideans 😅. Re the IUDs they make lambing much tighter than the teasers do. With teasers the ewes should all lamb within 17 days. With cidrs u can basically pick the day they lambs 😁
Never a dull moment. 👍
Got to credit the perseverance with the springless shears there! 😅
It’s a hard watch🤣
Absolutely another great video and very interesting video to watch .. TQSM Sir
Glad you enjoyed it
Howya cammie if ur having problems with feet leave a pile of lime in the field the type u spread on a field we had serious feet problems ourself and that sorted them. Love the vids🇮🇪🇮🇪🇮🇪
Cheers Ciaran. To be fair i've seen us doing that in summer round water troughs. Not done it for a while though maybe need to get back to it!
Isn't it always true that you can never find the right working tool you need when out and about. You did make it work though. 😂
Why did you not put the rams through the foot bath to get any foot rot cleared.
We did Rebecca but I hadn't pressed the button on the camera. Shame as that's the best part of these videos!
As always, thanks !
My pleasure!
Thanks cammy lizzy and marisa for your hard work❤
Your son is adorable with all of his blond curls😁
Cracking video as always.
You need the Hoof GP!!
Cammy could you please film a few videos of you buying rams?
One coming soon!
Jock's hair is so beautiful. (I'm doing lots of small comments for the algorithm)
🥰
Thanks for the video Cammy, looking forward to seeing what Rams you bring in, hopefully some sale footage too. Any more collaboration with the Viking ?
Got a sale vid coming soon! I don't think i'll be back up there until Scanning time in Feb / March!
Thanks Cammy, looking forward to the sale footage as well as the future scanning videos, hope you Lizzy and the boys are doing well. All the best.@@TheSheepGame
Well your fantastic skalet must be to mutch help! But it semester like it is time to invest in very good tools for the hooves!🐑🐏🕊🇸🇪
Jock is such a lovely dandelion! I can help but smile when I see him 😊
I use to do my ewes hoofs when I had them in lambing jugs but quit when I found they did not all need it every year and just did the over grown hooves after that.
Yeah we never trim sheeps feet but find the tups not working as hard means their feet grow faster so we're going to start routinely trimming them every 3 months or so.
I think little bit more care, looking at the feet ,feet feetrot bath ,good as gold
Some man!
Over here in NZ majority of farmers have any bad feet, health issues then culled, my region has 3m rain annually but free draining soil, as only causes more generational problems. Is there a reason you do it your way?
A good ram shouldn’t need pampering and a bad ram isn’t worth pampering😂😂
When do teasers go out? Also, why did that one ram have a dirty bum? Great video!
Cammy said that the tups should go out 14th Nov and I think the teasers go out about 3 weeks before that
Come to Stirling on the 7 th of October plenty tips to buy we are selling 15
Hi Jo, The teasers synchronise the ewes mating cycle, so he will mate them with a blank, the ewe will know she's not in lamb and will cycle again by that time we have the proper ram in. It makes lambing time shorter.
The Rams seem more chilled than the Ewes or is that just my imagination
Interesting not sheep person but think Kerry Hill is a sharp sheep Is that a good choice for your terrain and flock
Some team of tups
so interesting!
Cool recording on computer Every one has to be a computer tech now phoey😂
Need to have Graham hook you up with some hoof care tools
I'm sure he has a spare grinder around!
This wet warmish weather not been great for the semi-hardy sheep feet
Tup with the Fawkes, lamb with the Fool.
Great video Cammy! How much do the Texel shearlings average at Logie?
They'll be around that £750-£800 mark. I asked them to send down 2 @ £1000. Trying to up the genetics a bit.
You need to get Sandi Brock feet nippers 😅
Iodine draws maggots out. That’s what we use
Those babies are beautiful.
Nice
When you get foot bath in your eye!! 😭
Hey sweet Cammy…remember last year around November 5 (maybe?) the sheep market crashed as far as prices…how are prices right now? Again did you enjoy watching what I sent you? Your babies 🤍🤍🤍🥰
Yeah!! We still have loads left but hopefully we won't be under so much pressure to sell. We have 40 acres of forage rape to eat so lambs will run on that before we sell them! Hope you're well Tammy!
Do you disinfect the trimmers between sheep? What do yo disinfect them with?
Back when i used to trim a few regularly I used to use some dettol. I didn’t on this instance though. Just wiped them down. My thinking was they were going through footbath so that would deal with any bacteria from shears.
I think about the shepherds of centuries gone by, before antibiotics. What did they have that was effective against foot rot - anything?
I don’t think it was such an issue back in the day😅
If it was an issue the sheep probably died from it.
A lot of animals died before medicine came along.
They would trim out the necrotic area and dress the hoof with tar. They still do that in some areas of the world.
Its important to disinfect your trimmers before moving on to the next sheep so you're not spreading bacteria from one foot to the next.
Don't they fight being all together? I have 3 Cameroon wethers and 4 horns because of butting, plus a few scars on me!
They fight a bit when a new ram gets added but they soon learn the pecking order
Megan looks to be in fine fettle. ❤
How did you keep info before the electronic systems came along?
Do you need to take a course of animal medicine or does your knowledge come from experience?
I see Jock is getting on the job training.
I meant to send Jock birthday greetings but got sidetracked. Please give him a hug and a kiss for me.
Greetings from Northern California!!

Thanks Colleen, so it was usually written in .notes. on our phones but that would get confusing when it came time to write it down in the book. This way all the info is recorded instantly.
Re medicine use I just do what the vet tells me lol
Thank you for responding!!
Nothing like progress!!
Maybe putting on a wee block is a niche for sheep😅
The little lump at the bottom of the testicle is called the epidermis
Why do you hate buying tups?
Because I don't have enough money to buy the ones I want lol
@@TheSheepGame Fair enough!
The foot rot rams have obviously been lame for a while. Why not treat sooner ?
Cammy is too busy making money off farm, and Lizzy has two little ones to keep her very busy. Most family farms need a second job to survive these days. But I guess that doesn’t help the suffering animal
Hi Jimmy, probably a big factor is the tups either just lie where they are or keep grazing when we drive round them, they don't run away like the ewes do so I suppose we didn't realise there was so many lame. Also none of them were like 'hoof falling off' jobs or holding their leg up lame. We're just going to give them routine trims now to keep on top of it.
@@wendyrowland7787 Farmers do have to make an income but they do generally look after their livestock as a principal part of that. I think Cammy explained above why these ones weren't spotted sooner; they were in the field but are not as lively as ewes so weren't seen to be lame from routine observations. It only became visible when he rounded them up to put them in the pen.
@@jimmyjohnstone5878 as a former sheep farmer I can tell you that you don’t need to round them up, just walk into the field, but that takes a little time, and get them to move and do things like listen to hear any laboured or abnormal breathing and make sure they are not fly struck. Shepherds in Wiltshire were known as ‘lookers’ because of the time spent observing their flocks. One thing the farming press repeatedly remind farmers is to pay attention to the rams bearing in mind they are half the flock as they do tend to be forgotten. I hope Cammy manages to get them fit for service in time.
🐨👍
I think you should consider getting help or Do less sheep to Keep them healthy. Not a big Fan of using meds antibiotics you just need more care and maintenence specially for foot rot.
they are big
Epididimus
How were the feet on your whiteface Dartmoor cammy?
100% on the ram. We have one ewe that keeps going lame. Think we’ll need to cull her out 👍
Everybody different but need to cut those sore feet right down then treat.
The part at the bottom of the testicle is the bottom of the epididymus .
That's the one! Thanks.
🐑🐑🐑🐑👍👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Hydrogen peroxide will make those maggots come to the surface, then pick them off (then treat the foot of course).
😐Why use the wife’s garden snips?! Time for a trimming knife, small grinder and a rasp-file boss👍🏻🇦🇺
Robex is good ram instead too many texels out rouge ewe and beltex ram or full rouge ram they make great ewes too great for milk
Interesting Noel, hadn't heard of that one
@@TheSheepGame i have some this year out full rouge ram and lanark type ewes bigger size then texel a lot better for killing too rouge very much like a charlie easy lamb too great on ewe lambs
