Lane Staley's grandmother was our librarian at North Mason high school in Belfair Washington. I remember her showing me pictures of him and his family to me.
Mike Starr was my very sweet friend in the 80s. He lived down around the corner from where I lived at my grandma's in Burien, WA & we hung out a lot. The little cutie wanted me to be his gf but I had a bf at the time. I'd see him at parties & he'd stick his lower lip out, like pouting, over exaggerated, kinda kiddin. We went to school together too. This was about 2 years b4 they hit it big. After he was on Rehab w/Dr. Drew, he saw my best friend growing up, Renee, at the Methadone clinic in Seattle. She called me up & said he ran up, jumped on her, wrapped around her, legs & all & asked her in her ear "How is Donna?" Sadly, she died of a Heroun OD on 8/1/13 & we know what happened w/Mike. I guess I needed to get that long story out. I can't say how much I love the music of AIC. Staley's death was also a gut punch, knowing those details. Saying the usual RIP just doesn't seem to be enough but unfortunately, it'll have to be. ❣🙏❣
I grew up with a a preteen/teenager by the name of Layne Elmer. We used to run around the streets in Lynnwood. I grew up on 65th Pl., West in Lynnwood. When I moved away from Lynnwood in 1981, we parted ways as friends I ran into him years later in Nashville at a record store as him and the boys were signing autographs before their show with Ozzy Osbourne that night. I didn’t go up to the autograph table because that’s not my jam and I really didn’t know who was sitting over there, but as I was flipping through the albums in the store, I turn around and run face-to-face with Layne. We both recognized each other immediately, he said Chris dude what are you doing here and I said just flipping through albums man. I’m like what are you doing here? He said my band is opening up for Ozzy tonight. I said dude I thought Alice In Chains was opening up for Ozzy tonight. it’s hard to look at him like this 🥲 he was so messed up. But his gift was still so amazing and undeniable. So sad he couldn’t get free. He one of the GOATS.
I've been a huge fan of these guys since they came out. I think the significance of this, for us who've loved Alice in Chains for a while, is that this performance was April 10, 1996....Layne Staley overdosed on July 3, 1996. Just 2 1/2 months apart. I can see and hear his struggle through this entire Unplugged special. My favorite song by them is Would? I think you'd like it. RIP Layne Staley. "I'd like to fly, but my wings have been so denied." Very sad.
There were only a few shows, interviews, appearances, etc he showed up for after this unplugged performance. He struggled with addiction until his death in 2002. When his body was found he weighed 86 pounds and had no teeth. A wellness check was performed because he hadn't moved money for two weeks. He died on the same day as Kurt Cobain and his bandmate Mike Starr had an argument about helping Layne the day before he was ever heard from again. Starr ended up dying of a prescription overdose in 2011. So much pain and immense talent around that man.
@@MrStickypowCame here to say this. A lot of people say this was his last performance, it was not. They did 4 more shows on their tour with KISS after this appearance. After the 4th show Staley overdosed & they quit the tour. He lived 6 more years, passing in 2002. I saw AIC a couple of years ago. William DuVall can get pretty close to sounding like Staley, but there will never be another like him
The entire "Dirt" album (from which the studio version resides) is one of the most harrowing confessions of a man who had knowingly given up fighting his heroin addiction. It takes you on an incredible journey into the mind of a full-blown junkie and yes, it is very sad. But it is strangely beautiful at the same time - even at its most brutal moments - because it is honest. Some might say maybe a little too honest... self-fulfilling prophecies and all that. All I know is that Dirt's just a masterpiece in my eyes, but I'm from that era and was a fan since the moment I heard that scary was on the wall. I hate getting old, but I'm glad that I was in my early 20's when it dropped & I got to see them live a few times. AiC are legends in my book. RIP Layne & Mike
45 yr old here, I have the Baby Jessica movie on VHS tape. We can't watch it now, but it doesn't work with newer VCR'S no speed control like older ones. It was an amazing story.
Layne Staley had the voice of an angry angel. My favorite song of theirs isn’t on radio. “ Don’t Follow” … their music has helped me get through so many aspects of my life even to this day.
Jerry wrote it. There's a little piece in there where Layne had hit a note and Jerry looks back and smiles. They're still around they added a vocalist.
There's plenty of artists that don't use auto tuning, you just have to look harder for them. Honestly one of the reasons o listen to more country music now. Artists like Sturgil Simpson, Tyler Childers, Colter Wall, The Dead South. None of them use auto tune and have a unique sound
This entire concert is beautiful and tragic. I had a buddy that was in the business for years and he talked specially about how the camera work on this concert and how they were trying to hide laynes teeth because they were starting to rot from the drug use. So they did a lot of over head shots and shots where the mic was between his mouth and the camera. The lights were back lit and over head to cast shadows on his face. Its also why you see so many jump cuts, as soon as they start focusing on his face, bam jump cut.
I love it! Layne was so caught in the grips at this time and the band-mates had expressed doubt as to his ability to perform this show. All except for Jerry who insisted he could do it, (I believe those two were soul mates, of a sort). If you will notice at 14:28, Jerry looks back at the others as if to say, "I TOLD you!". Gives me chills every time! Thanks for this! We miss you, Layne.
Hey BP, first off thank you for reacting to this song. It has a special place in the hearts of us fans and is one of the most gripping live performances in Rock history. I think you will appreciate and enjoy their new singer William DuVall and would suggest Check My Brain as an introduction to his vocal capabilities. Honors the band's signature sound and Layne's legacy while taking a new direction that is exciting. Cheers!
BP i recall that baby girl being stuck in that hole and watching them try to get to her. Relating these lyrics to the situations with Layne makes this one so much much deeper. Hopefully now his spirit flies 🕊 may he rip 🙏
The original concept was being in the place due to a lost loved one (Holding red flowers in a tomb) But it is very much about the place, not why he's there.. Excellent dissection.
Great reaction - Love Alice in Chains - Thank you for all your hard work on these reactions - Greatly appreciated - Look forward to see you do more Alice in Chains Unplugged
you have to see Nirvana's MTV Unplugged session of the song 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night' also... both (AIC and Nirvana) of their full shows/albums are incredible, front to back
Control is an illusion. I learned that “again” when my wife was diagnosed with cancer. The big things like that, we are powerless and it humbles you. Without your health nothing else matters in this world, so make the right choice about your spiritual health (the one thing of most importance we can control” and the rest will be ok.
You've definitely gotta do "Nutshell" from the same concert. It's even deeper. This was their last performance before the lead singer Layne Staley passed away from a drug overdose. He was getting pretty bad, and everyone could see it here, but he still killed it. That two-part minor vocal harmony is their signature sound.
Ive watched and listened to this album thousands of times since it was first released and didnt realize until a couple years ago that he did this whole performance with no front teeth!
Never heard this version before. Not a big AIC fan, but this is by far my favorite track. When AIC cancelled Memphis for 3 shows in a row, they put on a free show, which was incredible. I only went because it was free. One of the shows they cancelled was opening for Van Halen and they needed a local band replacement at the last minute and some buddies of mine got the gig.
Layne briefly formed a band called Mad Season with Chris Cornell, Mike McCready (Lead guitarist for Pearl Jam), & Duff McKagen (Bassist for Guns N Roses)! They only made one album, but u should check out some of their songs! River of deceit and Wake up are two of my favs!
I watched the live video of baby Jessica being rescued, it was incredible. She was 18 months old. I wish Layne was able to get out of the holes in his life regardless of the theme of each one. He was an incredible musician who made a huge impact on the music scene. His fans miss him, myself included. There are videos that single out his voice without the background music and it’s incredible what a great voice he had. I recommend watching this episode of MTV Unplugged it highlights the incredible talent of this band. Their music has been relatable from the moment of release and it remains as such today.
This song hits so hard, just hearing the lyrics and seeing Laynes face. You can feel the pain. I agree the beginning took a second to get up to speed, but then it turned to pure gold. Pair this with Nutshell and its game over 😢
Layne and Jerry’s harmonies were magic. Side note the story you mentioned, the movie about her rescue is streamed free on UA-cam. The Jessica McClure story
Their live stuff is on a whole other level. I swear it's so much better than the studio versions because Layne emotes those lyrics to the crowd and the band puts their all into it as wel. You don't just hear their live stuff, you literally feel it. I'm obsessed with their live stuff. There are a lot of great suggestions in here, one of my other favorites is Junkhead at the Singles party
Everyone including Layne pretty knew that this would be the last time Layne would be able to sing because of his addiction. He was basically singing at his own funeral. Another thing to point out is AIC and Metallica are good friends with them and were sitting in the front row watching what they all figured was Layne’s last performance.
Layne Staley had started losing his teeth from the drugs he was doing. He was so highly addicted to heroin etc. He died at age 34. He was missing for about two weeks & found deceased in his apartment from a speedball overdose.
I'd love to see you listen to more grunge... I personally would love to see you react to more Soundgarden (My favorite), Alice in Chains, Nirvana, Stone Temple Pilots, Pearl Jam, Temple of the dog and Nirvana.
Everyone’s comments are heartfelt and empathetic. He was too good for this world.

I'm excited for this because Alice in chains was a huge part of my heart as a young adolescent.
Great reaction - Love Alice in Chains - Thank you for all your hard work on these reactions - Greatly appreciated - Look forward to see you do more Alice in Chains Unplugged
I remember Baby Jessica
1987 in Midland, Texas
"Would" next 😀
Love your reactions bro ❤ keep up the great content 👏
Don't know why the unplugged version of Brother gets overlooked.. master class in harmonization between Layne and Jerry
I love that version so much more than the studio version. Even though I love Ann Wilson's voice, I prefer Layne's harmonies.
Goosebumps every time…
Damn, the Talent coming out of Seattle is staggering! A in C, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden, Temple of the Dog, Nirvana, Candlebox, Hendrix, Heart....so on!
My 4 year old daughter loves listening to these unplugged AIC performances with me. She loves hearing the "Sad man" sing.😢
Yes!
you have to see Nirvana's MTV Unplugged session of the song 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night' also... both (AIC and Nirvana) of their full shows/albums are incredible, front to back
Whenever i hear this i just want to give Lane a big hug and ask if there is anything i can help with. The delivery just claws at my soul
It's about time you got around to this
Ive watched and listened to this album thousands of times since it was first released and didnt realize until a couple years ago that he did this whole performance with no front teeth!
Love Hate Love live at the Moore is a must watch my dude. That performance by Layne will blow your mind
9:34 I wasn't looking at the screen, and I legit thought Black P was the one harmonizing there, was about to say damn he really hit that! 😂
Hands down, that one show was the greatest thing MTV ever did!
This is amazing ❤️
One of my favorites
Great reaction🤘
Never heard this version before. Not a big AIC fan, but this is by far my favorite track. When AIC cancelled Memphis for 3 shows in a row, they put on a free show, which was incredible. I only went because it was free. One of the shows they cancelled was opening for Van Halen and they needed a local band replacement at the last minute and some buddies of mine got the gig.
How not? You live in a cavern? Lol
You gotta check the song 'rooster' with the official video. Super badass tune.
IMO This album is one of the best ever made. I’ve listened to it countless times and I still get the chills.
Chris Cornell isn't on Above
Woah I actually didn't know that 😮 sounds like a Rockstar Super team up!! 😊
@warrickcaldecott2866 Cornell isn't on the record. Idk where they got that from
@@theOGnokk Chris took part in a reunion show, that’s probably where she got that
Damn, I forgot how good this was, thanks for the reminder.
Thanks for the vid! Was my era, one of my favs. Very emotional to watch, Layne was in bad shape for this final live performance.
This will be your number 1 video, just wait for it. One of the best unplugged bands MTV did
Their live stuff is on a whole other level.
Studio version > live
Everyone including Layne pretty knew that this would be the last time Layne would be able to sing because of his addiction. He was basically singing at his own funeral. Another thing to point out is AIC and Metallica are good friends with them and were sitting in the front row watching what they all figured was Layne’s last performance.
Arguably in the top 5 best live performance albums of all time.
The whole show is amazing . 👍🏼👍🏼
The harmonizing in the studio version is clearer. Still, love all these Unplugged mini-concerts, better emotion.
that acoustic and the harmony is A+
Layne Staley had started losing his teeth from the drugs he was doing.
Gifted, temporarily prolific, damned and ultimately tragic and important musical artists.
