This was highly evocative! I grew up near steel mills. At night, the sky was illuminated by the fire from the blast furnaces, suggestive of some kind of industrial Dantean Inferno. Mountains of cooling slag heaps grew to dizzying heights, the outpourings of the Industrial Age, that is no more. The skies and the waters of those towns in Ohio and Pennsylvania are dark and quiet now. The rivers flow silently and clean, but a way of life, a culture has vanished.

Really enjoyed this. I spent a bit of time finding Deer Hunter site locations in Thailand. You can see them on my channel.

Thank you for sharing your video project Ed! 👏 This is one of my favorite movies and I believe culturally very significant! I was just in Tremont sitting outside of a cafe facing Lemko Hall. I grew up in Akron just south of Cleveland. I have been inside that church for a Mass service. It's stunning! The backstory of this film is just incredible!

What strikes me is how economically depressed the areas still are. The Rust Belt has not been treated kindly by time. A great video by you and your wife. Thank you for doing this homage to simply one of the very best movies ever made.

Thanks. Very good and informative. If you ever want to hunt BIG "White Tail" in Pennsylvania, go to the Allegheny National Forest near Warren, Pennsylvania.

@@thegreatindoorswithedandmi7880 It's fab. I'm always amazed how distant the locations were from each other, considering it's just set in a pretty nondescript small town. You'd have thought they could have found somewhere with the right bar, bowling alley, , church etc in one locality.

Crazy. I thought a lot more of the movie was filmed in Tremont. Honestly, there were steel mills all over the area and most of the scenes could have been filmed there. Good job hunting all these places down.

Thanks for the great video! It was very interesting to look at the locations from the film in our time. It's a little sad to see the destruction and desolation where life was in full swing in the film. I really love this movie! I watched it for the first time about 20 years ago, and then it struck me precisely because it showed the life of ordinary American steel mill workers. I'm from Russia

I'm a blue collar worker as well. The movie reminds me of all the different sacrifices people make that may go unnoticed. Thanks for watching.

Chuck was a general foreman at the #2 Q-BOP shop at Gary Works for U.S.Steel. He was considered as an actor in the film after meeting a couple of the actors and sharing beer(s) with them at the local bar, Tobys, on Virginia Street.

Chuck had a lot more scenes. After the movie, he did the same or a similar job in California. Unfortunately, he died last year in a nursing home. I think he only had a sister, Karen, unless his wife was also named Karen. It is possible since it says that she passed away in 2008, and his sister published his obituary. 7:03 The way he drew a man dying of cancer seems really scary. Fortunately, they say that Chuck did not have any repeated scenes. John Cazale is the only actor whose films were all nominated for an Oscar. All the scenes with Casale were shot first. Everything seems poor, they could have used the fame of the film to develop tourism, but they didn't.

What is the background music at the beginning? Is it from the movie Out of Africa ? It is beautiful.

Hi Ed and Michelle, love your videos. Great detective work. I just wanted to let you know, that you also uncovered another movie location that you may not be aware of. When you went to the location of Michael's house, at Avenue A and 2nd Street, you were also right near the basketball court where Michael's post-reception streaking incident ended, and he and Nicky had a conversation. That basketball court was right on the corner of Avenue A and 4th Street. You can screen-match the factory and that big steel scaffolding-type thing in the background. Perfect match.

I would never have known, but I watched your video, then I went to Google maps to mark the location, and I saw the factory in the background. Then I decided to re-watch The Deer Hunter, and I saw the same factory when DeNiro was streaking. I went back to Google maps, and sure enough, there on the corner is a paved lot with no overgrowth or grass at all. Clearly it was a basketball, and apparently also a shuffleboard, court. When DeNiro was sprawled out, I saw some shuffleboard markings on the ground. When you go there, check in the grass to see if you can find some shuffleboard discs in the bushes!

Oh: and the correct angle for Michael's house is from further up on 2nd street. His house was between the 2nd and 3rd telephone poles on 2nd Street. And in the movie, you can see that building in the background that is still there today. It has 5 windows across the 2nd floor, with a skinny window in the middle. So go up 2nd street a little further, and you'll have the perfect angle.

It's more likely to have been from Ferguson Tire Service which can be seen in Google Street View 2012, but seems to have been demolished by the time of your video. That building can be seen in the background of Michael/Nick's trailer, which was up the hill a bit. @@thegreatindoorswithedandmi7880
