That's what the cardboard tube is for. U push it with that tool and twist it.

a little under 20 bucks for a thermostat ,if you buy the whole housing as many want to sell ya ,its 202 plus tax for everything ,you are right ,just change the thermostat , especially since the housing isnt broken !
