I had this problem with customer car. I watched your video and discovered my problem was same as yours. I used a punch and a couple of pry bars to reposition the reluctor wheel. Then I use the welder and tacked it to the cam shift. It worked. Thank you for this video.
Awesome catch! That was the problem. I used a blunt piece of steel and a hammer to rotate the reluctor ring counterclockwise to get it back into alignment. I used a laser down the camshaft by eye for the realignment and put it back together and the codes cleared and car runs fine now, Thanks. Great find!!
God bless this man. I had to go in through the cam sensor port to knock the ring into a better position after doing the job, and it got to running with no codes.
I rarely comment or give Kudo's on a UA-cam vid, but this save me and the customer alot of headache. I actually adjusted the realuctor thru the cam sensor hole after finding TDC and changing a broken vacuum pump. thx Mike (Luckiamute Auto Body)

Great video!!! Been trying to find this problem for two days. Vac pump came apart, after fixing, would start, no idle, stall. New sensors, etc, couldn't find it!! thank you.
I've not pulled the cam shaft covers off, but here is a good one. P00014 and P0017. Crank no start. Pull both cam position sensors and car will start and idle. This was after I had replaced both valves. This started on my daughters Malibu after she heard a loud "thunk" from the engine compartment and within 3 miles at interstate speed the motor lost power and died in the fast lane. That is when she also discovered her brake pedal was very hard and more difficult to stop. The vacuum pump locked up and broke off chunks of the housing that surrounds the coupling, and hence knocked the reluctor out of position. I hope I can realign it on the cam. This design is not one of GM's better ideas.
Definitely need to address the reluctor. It likely runs with them disconnected because the ECM is not receiving any info instead of receiving info that says it’s out of time.
@@donshort6651 tapped the reluctor back into alignment with the barcode spot on the cam. Put it all back together and it started first crank. Running well now. Wasn’t the first time for this motor either. I found chunks of vacuum pump from a previous episode. Aluminum

@@brookebridgewater5219 Is the check engine light on? If yes, can you get someone to pull the codes? If you disconnect both cam position sensors will it start and idle? If so, then you likely have a cam position reluctor ( the thing that spins on the cam and tells the engine where the cam is in its rotation) knocked out of position. Which will require pulling the valve cover to see.

Getting ready to do this to my cousins car. Same thing has happened. Vacuum pump had broke into a bunch of pieces and the reluctor had spun almost 1/2 way around. Appreciate the help buddy!
Just did one. Same issue. Very common problem. Its electronically timed, if it moves it will not start! Replace just the cam and the vacuum pump and your good to go. Obviously pull your pan off and clean it out, plus l.o.f. Just reset the timing tensioner and use a small drill bit to hold it. Timing simple. Cam cap torque is 106 inch pounds. Actuator is 15 ft lbs. Plus 90 degrees.

Hey Don -thank you for the video. We have a 2019 Malibu in the shop now with an intermittent crank/no-start BUT also while the customer is driving it, the car will lose power and she has to pull over and shut it off. It only has the P0014 code and so far the brakes are fine. Oil is full and clean and so far we have not been able to duplicate ANY of her symptoms. Thoughts?
I would swap the cam sensors if they’re the same. See if it changes to the intake side. You could always remove the valve cover and inspect the reluctor position on the camshaft. With it being intermittent, I don’t think this would be your issue. The issue I was seeing would set codes immediately after start up.

I chose to replace it, but it maybe could have been reused. I didn’t want to take the chance that maybe the reluctor wouldn’t be as tight and could move again.
I have a question for you. I have the same vehicle. I replaced the camshaft after the vacuum pump broke. For some reason, the new cam isn't going in correctly. The A on the exhaust sprocket is turned to the left about 60 degrees from the intake sprocket. Is this normal? I put it all back together and it's still throwing codes. PO1101 and PO0011. When I installed the new chain. I had to grab a wrench and move the exhaust camshaft to the right position to put the chain on. But I feel like this is throwing off the timing. Any advice would be greatly appreciated thank you!
If you aligned the colored links then it should be in time. Some engines will require you to rotate the cam a little to get it timed correctly. Did you install a new chain?

Well, I have no way to verify your timing is good. If it starts with brake cleaner then you just not be getting fuel.
