How to fix the stuck DVD Drive issue on the old XBox 360's. Very easy to do and will let you get back those games lost in there for months.

Helping folks a decade later! I was sweating when I was cutting through the warranty tape, but then I realize there is no way this thing is still under warranty more than 10 years after purchase.

hey i just wanted to say thank you for this, been searching for a while for how to fix this problem and after going through all the 12 year olds saying to do silly things like jam knifes into turned on electronics it was really nice to come across someone who actually knows what theyre talking about
I had a modern warfare 2 limited edition 360 in the closet with the disc tray half way out. It would not close or open. Its been in the closet for at the least 2-3 years. I had given up on it. Yesterday I was searching around on how to fix my ps3. Ran into this video. I got home followed the video and BAM!!!!!!! It works now. Thx man.
Dude the same thing happened to me :/ im gonna open it and fix it, it is one of a kind! but im bummed out my optical drive (matte black bezel with xbox 360 on it) is broken.. im gonna have to get a replacement chrome one

The face plates were pretty hard to remove with just a screwdriver but eventually got it, everything else was easy. Thanks so much for this
Thank you for this video. My tray had been jammed for months and none of the other things I tried worked. Turns out that a small piece of the tray was broken and jamming the tray. I was able to fix it and my Xbox is working great now!
The year is 2020 .... after many years of Xbox playing my tray finally gave up ... so I spent £2 on that Bay and get a replacment band ... followed this video and we are back up and running .... thanks dude ... appreciate the video .... :)

It’s 2024 and I’ve used this video to fix that exact problem and it works. One thing I will say is doing it without the opening tool took ages.

I'm a 58 year old woman. I figured if I could build a desk top computer I could do this. I followed your video and fixed my xbox360 gen2. Also made sure to use canned air to clean out the dust that will help with keeping the heat down. I no longer have to keep a disc in it so that it will open. Thanks so much for another headache gone from my house.

I bought my 360 about 10-11 years ago when they were only out a few years. I got it for $60 when they were reselling used for $100-150 more than that because the drive wouldn't open, and it came with no cords or controllers. I just pried the face off and dealt with it not opening for years. Not sure why, but I guess I decided to fix it, and watched this video. It's been working perfectly for a few days now, and I don't know why I waited so long to fix it. For the first time since I've owned this machine, the face facade is in place and the drawer slides out every time! Thanks!

You know, i normally talk shit about UA-camrs' who do these tutorials, but after i got the case open my self and everything, i could not find how to open the drive, thanks man.
You don't have to disassemble the console for this! Just get yourself a flashlight (I used my phone's light), power off console, use a paperclip to open tray, remove the band, wipe it (I used some antibacterial wet wipe), then reverse it (so that the inner side is facing out and not touching the gears), put it back on. First put it on the small motor gear, then as much as you can on the big gear and turn it (the big gear) clockwise while holding the band so it doesn't slip off. Voila! It's like new now... Just bought a used arcade jasper.

I believe you have to remove the front plate and then there's a little hole in there to put the clip in. there must be a vid on youtube

BTW for anyone wondering, you can do this WITHOUT taking it apart, like he said though its harder. I just turned the 360 off, popped off the front panel, spun the wheel while everything was together with a toothpick, then did the same process as in the video with a pair of tweezers. To get the band back on (with tweezers) just hook the small wheel on first, then the front of the big wheel and then bring the band around the side and to the back of the big wheel and drop it down.

@@flugamelu I was having the same problem at the 3min point of opening the case. There are 5 sliders on onside that need to depressed all together. Doing then without a specific tool designed to release all together makes it very tricky. I did manage, but only with help of someone pulling the case apart whilst I released each clip.
Yeah every single pin on the back of mine is broken 😂 I bought mine used and the chick before tried to fix it herself but didn’t have the right hardware to open the electronic part thank god. But yeah she superglued the back, back together

thanks alot bro. my sons xbox was jammed and misaligned. I used your video to dismantle the xbox safely and correctly. cleaned the dust out to keep it clean. then gently pulled out disk tray. I then completely removed the disk tray gently (was tricky) but by following the track lines it clicked back and re aligned. checked carefully with power on and it worked sweet. thanks for this video. really easy to follow.
All I do is slap my Xbox until it opens
The problem is that I slapped mine so hard that it no longer opens 😂
Facts!! But now it won't close all the way it's a tiny bit open.. and won't open. As soon as I power on my Xbox it's trying to automatically open or close the tray.. poor thing

@@nicholasbossi2377 yea.. I got a flathead screwdriver thing (lol.. thing) and put it in the spot that was partly open and dragged open the tray.. forced it .. w.e but then it kinda eased up.. a screwdriver is always helpful? Even tho I have a half metal and half plastic shell xbox360 now 😅

My tray is jammed. It will not come out but maybe a couple of inches What could be causing it to jam?

I used a paperclip to open the drive and then I could see the wheels and band so cleaned them with a brush with some isopropyl on it. Thank's for showing where it all was. I also heard from other comments that if you leave a disk in it will never ever fail to open - no idea if it's true but no harm in trying. Cheers.
Mine only does it when there's no disc in it.

Spray wd40 on it from the outside under the tray in the middle. Guaranteed to fix it
+nargis751 lol not gaurenteed.. mine was a bent piece of plastic had to completley dissassemble the tray.
Everything&Anything well done for sorting it. whenever something mechanical gets jammed I use wd40 if that fails then dismantle it.!

@Mattie432 trust me is easy to use paperclip to open disc drive you just have to stick it in the middle to open when I clean the mechanism disc drive.
Tysm, in 2020 summer I got a xbox 360 from a yard sale for 30 bucks, the disk drive was the only thing that didn't work, so me and my dad used this, broken some of the plastic but still works perfectly fine, again tysm.

Using this method you can clean the inside of your Xbox 360 but there are more detailed videos of it on UA-cam.
Thanks for this. I was able to spin the drive belt manually by taking off the front case and swiping a screwdriver over the belt until it popped open!
Unfortunately, the drive won't read any discs, so I'll have to figure that out soon.

This worked perfectly.... One tip some of the parts like the plastics won't come off easily like the video because this isn't his first time opening that Xbox 360 so be patient this will work if you follow instructions
I second this. My Xbox did NOT want to come open, and it took a lot longer and more force than I was expecting, but it eventually did!

you are an amazing young man, i fixed it! One suggestion though, i noticed on the main wheel where you pulled the band from? The brass or copper looking post in the middle of the wheel was sticking up slightly, and would catch on the bottom of the tray. with some pressure, it popped back down and the tray was free to move.

Thank you so much. I'm a chick and I open the whole console up after watching your video. Turns out the underside of the tray got damaged. So I gave it a facelift. Works perfectly now.
So helpful with the manual pulley opening! I also was cleaning the rubber belt and the door latched on me. Now it opens perfectly!
Thanks for this video. Cleaning the small belt worked! However, I just opened the tray and grabbed the belt with some tweezers, cleaned it, and put it back on w/the same tweezers. There was no need to take apart the entire xbox.

mine would also only come out half way . followed the video . only thing I did different was manually pull the tray out and off the machine when it was apart . put it back in track , out it all together and BAM it worked . you are a genius friend . Peace from the States

I was cleaning the belt without taking the Box apart. I got the belt off but let the drawer slip and it closed and latched. The part about turning the pulley (at about 05:55 ) is exactly what I needed!! Thanks!!

I originally subbed because of your clear tutorials, from modding, to your window 7 theme tutorials, you make it very easy to follow along and you are great at explaining how to do certain things, keep it up
Hey, thanks man. Just FYI though to anyone reading this. You don't need to remove everything. Just the faceplate, sides and the front part to see the wheel. Spin counterclockwise and you got it. Then a hold quetip with rubbing alcohol by the rubber band. While doing this, push the tray in and out slowly. The grime should come off. Solved, if that's the problem to begin with.

Thanks for that video! I had a bid on eBay for a replacement DVD drive, started to think that replacing it could get complicated if flashing the "new" drive were a requirement, and then I stumbled across your video. I did as you prescribed, and now it's working like a champ! I have another Xbox exhibiting intermittent problems of the same nature, and did that one as well. The other one had about a pound of dust inside, and cleaning it out using a service vacuum cleaner fixed the loud fans.
