I'm inclined to think in anticipation that a storm maybe significant in how impactful it is in a region, it gets named after some criteria is met so that when it is recalled in conversation and/or record keeping, we'd know which storm is being talked about. Rather than just saying "storm of [year]", there would be many storms of that particular year, so thus we have a name for the storms. I know, I know. Rich Mitch: "SHUT UP." ................
