290. Million-pound mega-yachts in Palma, Majorca

- I’m just back from a week’s holiday in Palma in Majorca where I thought I’d do a rare ‘real vlog’ where I wander about as a tourist, pointing the camcorder at the boats.

I for one appreciate the Sir Mixalot reference 🤣
And all of us others can not deny!😎
Yeah, I laughed too
👌🤣
Deserves a "stern" rebuke... 😂
"And I like big boats and I cannot lie" Bravo that man! 😂👏👏👏
David, I originated from poole, dorset. The harbour there is exactly the same. No fencing we used to fish as kids with handlines luckily never fell in. I think it's extraordinary no one has gone in as the other side of the road is lined with pubs!
That is indeed surprising!
"I like big boats and I cannot lie..." 😂😂😂
I don't get it?
@@jonathanbarrett3532 ua-cam.com/video/X53ZSxkQ3Ho/v-deo.html
@@jonathanbarrett3532 It's a bit of spin on an old Rap lyric(from the early 90s).
Sir Mix-A-Lot - Baby Got Back
ua-cam.com/video/X53ZSxkQ3Ho/v-deo.html
@@jonathanbarrett3532 You have superior taste in music and have managed to avoided that one...
@@jonathanbarrett3532 It's a play on words from a song by Sir Mixalot with a lyric "I like big butts and I cannot lie". Very clever !!
Portals Nous just 12km further on from Palma is THE place for boats David. There is unlimited access to the Marina which is very easy to walk around considering the expensive boats moored there which you can stand just feet away from. I felt it was more 'upmarket' than Palma Marina. Well worth visiting if you have time!
Alas, I’m back now but maybe next time
I like big boats and I cannot lie, but my wallet will deny! Nice change of scenery thanks for sharing.
Thank you David for taking us on this journey with you. You are such a great communicator & we thank you sincerely. Love from New Zealand.
Thank you 😊
I could do with a week there. It's delightful to see such a warm pleasant view at 40 degrees north in The Med, with snow on the ground at 40 degrees north in Columbus and Indianapolis. That's why it's called a vacation. Thank you.
For me, as a denizen of the Texas gulf coast, hearing someone called 17°C "blazingly hot" is wonderfully refreshing! (That would be 63°F, a temperature we do occasionally see down here in the swamp, but approaching from the other side.) Thank you, David. I quite enjoyed this unexpected journey to Mallorca.
😀
A little geekery from a former planetarium operator. The sundial is called, I think, an "analemic" sundial. An "analemma" is the path the noon sun traces in the sky through the course of the year, represented by that figure8 pattern. The analemma makes the sundial more accurate since it compensates for the change of seasons. Thank you for the lovely tour!
Good info, thank you
I suspect you were there at the best time of year! Great to see all the locals bundled into their padded jackets as you went in search of a cold drink and ice cream. Gorgeous boats, blue sky and sea, what’s not to like?
'i like big boats and i cannot lie' it would be criminal if that wasn't going to become merch lol
Excellent idea!!
I for one am delighted that you can tell the difference between a boat & a cathedral David. Clearly those glasses of yours are working fine!! 😎😱
PS : Enjoy the rest of your hols.
Thanks for bringing us the sun from the so-called "17th state of Germany"...
🤣
Brought back memories from a few years ago, when I spent half a day wandering in these marinas, looking at the boats!
Thx a lot for taking us with you!
👍👍👍
I actually felt a lot warmer watching this. Thankyou David for taking us along.
Yes Mate.
What a good idea to make it a winter ritual. You good do boats around the med , whilst at the same time catching some rays 😎. A nice sunny vlog for a Baltic day at home. 👍
My wife and I had two Mediterranean cruises that included stops at Mallorca! We loved the city, and would love to go back!
Thank you, David, so many lovely little and BIG boats there. Thank you for such a pleasant promenade around the shores.
I was most intrigued by the sailing boat at 4:45. And I can't decide if my favorite line was. "miss the gentle smell of diesel" or "marina del biggun".
Marina Del'Biggun sounds like a film star from the 70's!
Methinks our videographer is starting to miss his narrow boat!!! 🤠👍
I miss the canals, certainly
Nice walk around the shoreline. You never lose boat fever!
What I love in Marinas especially on a windy day, is the sound of the wires tinkling against the poles (don't the techinal names sorry). The gentle noise is delightful.
Thank you for another fun video. My favorites; The Nostromo I "that's not a Lobster it's an Alien" and the great big all black one. Must belong to a wanna-be James Bond Villain :o). It was also fascinating to see that as you walked past each area the average cost of each vessel went up by several magnitudes. Lots of fun.
Wonderful walkabout! Thank you for taking us along on your stroll to see the sea the ships and the sailing things. Hope you had a relaxing break.😎
I did!
Very interesting thank you for taking us all along🙏✝️🙏🇨🇦
Sir, you do such an amazing job of (beautifully) riding the line between classic British TV host and salt-of-the-Earth contemporary VLOGer that I just cannot sing your praises enough.
I enjoy each installment and thank you so much!
And I don't think you try to ride that line...it's just who you are...and that's what makes your stories so enchanting.
Thank you so much 😊
Thanks David for taking us with you and cheering us up with some sunshine.
Great video David you lucky bugger, but you work hard so you deserve it. It looks lovely. I read somewhere that owners of boats /yachts like those in your vid spend as little as 10% of their time on the boats actually chugging about around the med / world. When you showed the the fish sheltering under the hull of the boat I was sure your were going to say “We need a bigger boat” (From Jaws). Great video thanks.
Haha I should have!
Breathtakingly beautiful. Hope you had a great holiday. 🎉
I did, thank you
Trying for the Philippines or Thailand this end, Hope Majorca was fun.and your not wrong bout Palma Cathedral or the Royal Palace. Its looks like a pretty kool place. Nice job, thanks m8
Always supremely professional and interesting videos
What a lovely walk around, in the sunshine, looking at boats! Thank you for sharing your day with us!
Looks like a nice place to be…. Thanks for sharing!
Judith Chalmers is still looking good I see, thank you for taking us along, I enjoyed that.👍
Haha you're showing your age!!
Best laugh so far this year: “There’s a fish!”😆
I thought it unusual that not a single boat seems to be used on a warm sunny Sunday.
After all this time you feel like an old friend sending me his vacation vids. Carry on.
You must really miss your Narrowboat. I too love the videos, of old, cruzing along the beautiful, and lovely green English country side. The first thing coming to my mind of those apartments was the FUGGLY Milton Keynes. Remember your Sun block! 😉
I miss the canals
How lovely! Thanks for taking us along, David. As always, a most enjoyable journey while still in my pjs on a Saturday morning in Las Cruces, NM. ❤
Thanks David! I hope you had a nice hola-day. I didn't realize you were into hip-hop!
I’m down with tha kidz
"I like big boats and I can not lie". 😂😂😂
If they knew that DAVID JOHNS was just outside the fence, gates would fly open and invitations to inspect yachts would abound! Aquaholic would be green with envy... 😎
Brief and concise David... hope you enjoyed your holiday, thanks for sharing... Have a wonderful and prosperous 2023... Cheers from Tennessee, USA
Thank you
I spent 10 days sailing around Mallorca and in a marina just where you were filming, aboard my second in line father in laws Camper Nicholsen yacht back in the 1980s. It was a great time apart from when the engine control snapped, and I had to operate it at the engine end. The replacement was bough just behind the wonderful cathedral.
A large yacht came into an outer dock and unloaded a Rolls Royce specially built shorter to fit in the ships hold. They even had a lamp post at the end of the gangway for the ships dog to use. Are how the other half live.!!!!!
Thanks for stirring up memories yet again.
Right then - get yourself a phrase book, go back to Palma, have some decent meals in restaurants down by the boats 🍔, chat to the staff, find someone who owns one, wangle an invite and get yourself on there 😂 and take us all with you! Great little 'boat show' vlog though! Beautiful cathedral too. Thanks as always
Alas, I’m back now
Next time then 😂
Awesome tour!!
Thank you!
Many thanks David, for a lovely winter reminder of the delight of Mallorca... one of my favourite places...SO much variety ...
Oh this brings back so many memories of walking on that promenade whit my 3 year old son almost 40 years ago on our holiday trip to Palma. We lived on a hotel not to fare away, not on one of those big boats sadly
I also “like big boats and cannot lie” David! 😊 Until later in the video I couldn’t comprehend that many boats in one place! 😮 Wow, thanks for sharing David! As always, another great video.
"I like big boats, and I cannot lie" might be your best pun so far this year.
Well look at you playing yacht-see in Majorca! Well done sir.
I love big boats and I cannot lie. Awesome!
Always enjoy seeing loads of lovely boats, big and small. Thanks David.
Fantastic remarks. Enjoyed very much. Beautiful weather.
What a fantastic location. So many beautiful boats. Thanks for sharing. Be well and stay safe.
Hi, So happy you got to take a holiday. Thank you muchly for showing us all the boats. This is boat heaven for sure. Just think how much they all cost together. Take care, Gloria
Glad you're feeling up to a vacation!! Awesome scenery too !! Thanks much !
I used to drive down to Port Solent in Portsmouth just to look at the boats. :) I was sad when they fenced off the wharves, but I could understand, especially as it was surrounded by very popular restaurants, cinemas and the like. It wasn't remotely as big as this, but when I drove further west, the road went over a huge river with a *vast* marina! Masts as far as the eye could see! :) I expect some people see it every day on their commute, but it was always a bit of a wonder to me.
A particularly historic dock somewhere around there was all just open to be fallen into (lol) when I used to visit. I think it was in Poole. I know it's not really near Porstmouth at all, but the places are grouped together in my mind because they're all on the roads west from where I lived. I used to go driving that way, partly for the drive itself but also for the then-unspoiled beauty of the Isle of Purbeck.
*sigh* Dreams... I'd _love_ to live on a boat, but with my health, the chaos level would reach disaster proportions. Maybe in the next life ;)
You almost had me convinced you were going to jump aboard that boat and sail off into the sunset 🌇 😂. A quick thought passed through my mind, that I would soon see your picture on the news like the guy who rolled over in that stolen boat a few weeks back. 🤣
Enjoy your holiday, David. Thanks for the tour.
I did, thank you. Back now!
"Oy yoy yoy!Oh yeah , this is where the boats are" you seem to enjoy your vacation very much :D Thanks for the tour
Your pun game was strong in this vlog!! Enjoyed it greatly!
Thank you! 😃
I do enjoy gongoozling Boats. I think is my first time doing it in Spain. Thanks for taking us! Enjoy your vacation👍👍
It is good to see you made another great informational vlog!
Majorca was the first place I ever went abroad to - since then I have been back time and time again - its one of my Happy Places - thanks for the vlog
I remember being there what seems like a million years ago. Only thing I can remember was all the boats. So thank you for a trip round the harbour. Hope your holiday was restful and enjoyable.
It was 😀
"I like big boats and I cannot lie"... Epic pun. LOVE IT! LOL
Marina Del Biggum! Most accurately described!! Thanks for sharing a part of your holiday.
Lovely video David! Glad you took a vacation ♥
The cathedral is so beautiful! The water looks lovely🤗 Hundreds of boats😯so close, yet so far away. However, they did make your tail wag just looking at them😉 Very nice vlog, thank you!
Thanks for the memories, in the 70s we used to moor often stern to the Paseo Maritimo before all the new marinas and kept our boat there in the Club de Mar for a year for 300 pounds. The King's father lived aboard his yacht along the same pontoon but Juan Carlos fell out with the marina because they wouldnt allow his kids in the pool with an adults only rule.
Quite right too!
Well David it looks like you chose the most splendid place to have a few days of relaxation. Those where some large boats. I hate to think about it like this but the cost and upkeep plus paying someone to help I cannot get around it. Thanks for sharing your few days of Nirvana!
Happy holiday!!!
💓💓 the super cool sundial...
Goat wagon rails..
Boat porn..
Crates of wine...
Brilliant blue sky..
Glorious sunshine..
And of course our David.
Who could ask for more on a dreary Saturday?
Cheers =^··^=
Love Majorca….all the boats chinking in the harbour….It’s a beautiful island
Hey David. What a Fantastic video. Wow. Our 24 ft. pontoon boat was nothing like those beauties. I looked up on Google, and those rails you showed are part of the old Mallorca electric rail network. Used for passengers and loading and unloading ships years ago. Thank for sharing your vacation with us. Fascinating. Travel safe and don't forget the sunscreen.
Totally awesome. Love it. So MANY huge boats and others. Man. Thanks.
How beautiful! Enjoy your holiday!
I did, thank you. Back now ☹️
Thanks for that trip down memory lane…. Or Paseo! But when we used to visit there were far fewer boats and you could actually see the sea!!! Lovely hotel on the front. Anyway we hope you enjoyed the break. C&Lx
Wow! Bought a 56ft ketch here years ago and spent 3 years on it. Gibralta, Morocco, Canary Island, Barbados and all up the Caribbean to Ft. Lauderdale. Met and married my wife on the way. Happy times. Thanks for his memory jolt
Lovely David.Hope you enjoyed your wee break.
I did, thanks
Loved the walk around.
Thanks for bringing us along on your holibobs! ☀️🛥️
The larger the boat, the less time the busy owner has to spend on it. I lived in marinas for ten years and owners used to pay me to take their boats out for exercise. I had a dozen sets of key and my friends had their choice of boats for me to take them out on. Good times.
Thankyou for sharing! As I will never go there it was lovely to have a mooch about. I found the whole video very enjoyable and intervals without boats is just fine with me. Enjoy your holiday, gee some of those boats are monsters! Give me a homely modest boat with lovely wood features any day.. Good decision to share, thankyou Jane Southern Australia
Wow! A veritable forest of masts: one can’t see the boats for the “trees” (or something like that). At any rate, that was a very enjoyable walk around the harbor! It brought back fond memories of my childhood, since any trip that involved being near water also involved looking at boats. 🥰. Thank you for bringing us along - I hope you had a pleasant holiday!
I did, thank you
Very good footage at the marina. I enjoy kayaking through the marinas here in San Diego and enjoying the beautiful (expensive) boats.
Very relaxing, hope you had a good holiday (got my fingers crossed that you journeyed down in the campervan and we have that video to look forward to 🤞)
Errr no, I flew down.
A fun & refreshing departure from the "norm." Always keeping things interesting, David. 👍👍
Thank you
That was pleasant enough diversion, thank you so much. Many years ago someone misjudged my character and felt me worthy to invite me for a day on a large fancy boat. It was roughly the class of the first set you described as large. Very interesting no doubt, glad I had the opportunity. But to be honest, I get much more pleasure poking around in the reeds in my kayak.
I hope your vacation was very relaxing and recharging.
7:52 is all you need. Forget the big boats. The smallest boat your comfortable with is the best boat to have. Manageable on your own, broad decks, mid cleat, easy to reach from the helm position. Nice travel Blog David! You should do this more often!
Nice job with this. Keep ‘em coming! 🥸
Superb vacay, David. Wish I was there! 😎💕😎💕😎
With those big boats/yachts David Bowie once said "The best two days of owning it, are the day you buy it and the day you sell it" lol
We used to hang out in Mallorca, in the 90s. My bro and sis in law had a flat. It’s so beautiful, and the food is delicious.
I had visions of someone coming up to you and saying hi David would you like to go for a spin around the harbour but no such luck. As always a splendid documentary on your travels thanks David looking forward to hearing more about your little vacation in a place I never knew existed
Hi David!
Enjoy your holiday travels. I haven't had a proper vacation in many years. Only work.
"I like big boats and I cannot lie. You other boaters can't deny!"
There are so many type of boats i could not chose which one. Have a great time David.
I did! Cheers
When I have the opportunity, I usually go around and look at boats. I also like beautiful buildings so this was perfect! 👍
I like the look of the couple of black boats you saw, but I imagine they would get pretty hot in the sun. Thanks for the tour.
