Great video but I thought you could have gone harder 😂. Yes the affiliation links are one big reason…people start channels reviewing Ali watches because they are cheap, also because aliexpress sellers are first to offer free watches but I also did it because I love making content and you can’t see these watches in shops so as long as you have the watch you are providing a useful service. I also have to sell most of the watches I review because I never charge a cash fee unlike MOST large channels. I also don’t like that channels review watches they haven’t handled. I only ever recommend watches I’ve handled. I still get some for free from aliexpress but actually I buy many now because it’s easier than dealing with the sellers. They can be quite demanding and even try to influence the content. I’m known for my San Martin content but I have no shame in that, they make amazing watches in my opinion and they get the most views too…there’s far more sinister and nefarious stuff going on than this trust me…this is the tip of the iceberg in terms of the ‘let’s all hate on reviewers’ subject like for example…where Bens video on dodgy watch reviewers gone? Did he remove it because he’s now started up a second channel where he does the very things he was so critical of in his video….😅 his new channel also has no connection to his main channel so it seems he wants to almost fly under the radar…be ethical on one channel and be a dodgy reviewer on the other…You can’t make a video shaming reviewers for doing what every reviewer does then set up a channel and also do it…I think that’s called hypocrisy.
I cannot imagine the clownery that goes on behind the scenes. I for one think you and Simon are doing it correctly. Thanks and keep the SM Content coming!
@@ilikewatches true story, at the end of this video (originally) I highly recommended your channel and Simon’s channel and James channel from Watching James, I should have left that in but it was already getting more wordy than I wanted it to be, and you and I have discussed the issue with people hiding themselves behind the includes paid promotion bit! Appreciate your channel and your content more than you know Gary, now ya do :)
Great video man! I have been contemplating about doing a “how much I make as a youtuber” video lol. Just to pull the curtain a bit and I am with you on your pet peeve, recommending watches they haven’t seen in the metal for clicks and sales makes me smh. 🙂↔️
Thanks David! I am about to begin on the influencer program for aliexpress but not sure how far I will go with it as their platform stinks and isn’t the most user friendly. Hopefully it will provide opportunity for me to make a wee bit more but I will never push a product I haven’t handled that’s for sure and I would love to hear about your experience on UA-cam for sure
For me personally, I don't mind being shown watches that the watch reviewer is watching. I actually like this. I like being made aware of watches that I'm not aware of. I don't care if the reviewer has actually handled the watch or not. I just want to be made aware of new watches and then I'll decide whether to buy it or not.
My thoughts exactly! I'm a noob and still developing my taste for wristcandy. I've learned from other hobbyists about what stands out about certain watches: I'll decide if I agree! For instance: I realized "I don't get it" about about dive watches, I really love vintage military watches, I learned that I was captivated by all Wristwatch Revival videos and so, instead of watches, I spent my money on tools, lubes and clone movements just to do maintenance!
Oh for sure some of the things I have learned about what some UA-camrs are doing (sly, without full transparency) is troublesome and of course it’s all about the money unfortunately
I think you forgot one major reason.. it's content the viewers want to see. As inflation skyrockets, the budget conscious consumer is looking for value and that's where your first few points come in. I'm far more curious about when reviewers are getting paid in addition to getting a free watch.
Yes gz that is also true aliexpress videos are very popular, just look at how this one is trending compared to my other videos, yiu are absolutely correct about that
You make a lot of sense. When someone reviews a watch, they are actually doing some work. When they just provide a list of "watches I am watching" they are just fishing for commissions through affiliate links. It is borderline dishonest. This irks me as much as those "Watch me reacting to someone else's video" which just means someone else did all the work, and I get all the hits and UA-cam payments when all I did was roll someone else's videos, and throw in a few personal comments of my own.
I don't have a problem when reviewers make lists of watches that they are keeping their eye on, that's exactly right that everyone is doing it, but they will bring something to your attention or remind you about it. The annoying thing is that the lists get very repetitive especially when they are all so similar. Like a new san martin release is bascially going to be on every single reviewers list.
@@gz7587 yes, I totally agree, although I will say I think it’s annoying when said video with lists has affiliate links when you know the person hasn’t had the watch in hand but still wants you to buy it so they can get the commission. Most do that, and that’s my beef, having a list video in and of itself is not an issue I have
Thank you for the video. Reason No. 5 is such a problem. I do understand the money aspect, but I think reviewers should keep it under strict control. Sadly, some - including a few of my most favourite watch UA-camrs - don’t always succeed in that regard. For me, a watch review should be objective, critical, and based on a personal experience with the watch in question. Please be honest and professional, and don’t review watches you didn’t have in your hands.
I am getting really tired of the incessant shilling on UA-cam. Either AliExpress or microbrand watches. And even the most honest reviewer (which not all of them are!) will see differently the same watch when it's sent for free vs. when it's bought with its own money or on loan for review. Thank you for this video!
I think most viewers are aware of this, but it is good to remind us 👍 . I don't mind reviewers getting free watches and using affiliate links as long as they declare it AND I see them criticise the watches, if every watch is wondeful something is wrong. I still watch channels that charge fees (finding out who takes a while, they should declare this at the start) if they are entertaining, but take their recommendations with a large pinch of salt.
@@c.s2001 well it’s true, I am new to being an aliexpress influencer as they reached out to me. Not sure how long I will be on it though. I have one wafch on the way that I am super excited to highlight where I reached out, fantastic looking watch by a microbrand in the US
Theres also a point of sustainability for a watch content creator, once they get to the point of monetisation on YT, affiliate links and the causal promoted videos is that they are not going to hang onto all of their watches that they feature so they would end up selling the ones they bought from AliExpress onto places like ebay as an example.
I really agree that those "Watches I am Watching" reviews are the lazy man's way to get UA-cam hits by just comparing specs on paper without ever having seen or touched a product. When you couple this with a clickbait title and thumbnail this is just as dishonest as those "reaction videos" where someone else does the work, and you get paid for their efforts. And the ultimate bottom of the barrel are those videos that don't even have a human narrating them.... just a computer generated voice comparing "the five best dishwashers" or the "top ten laptops for 2024" videos. Those kinds of reviews are really faking it for easy income.
If I had million I would buy Rolex, Omegas, etc, etc. However I have a regular job with a regular income. Pagani Design, Steeldive etc, etc are within my price range. Anyone unless they and interested in watches could not tell the difference or ever care if you wearing a Rolex or a Pagani. All the AliExpress watches I have had are worth the money.

I think it's okay to make a "what I'm watching" video as long as you're not flat-out endorsing them or making claims about them and passing it off as a review. It's also important to say when you're getting commissions off of sales. I'm a content creator and always make sure to clearly disclose that. I haven't seen a ton of those "what I'm watching" videos, but I do like seeing some recommendations for watches I might not have been aware of. Then as a viewer, I will go look up more about it to get more info before purchasing it.
This is the point of my video. The I’m Watching lists are fine by me too if they are being shared as a point of interest but some (not all) are doing so and sharing affiliate links with the hope that someone will purchase it based on a rather cavalier recommendation as you know in some cases they haven’t handled the watches at all. Not what I would do. In fact in my latest video about the best pagani design watches I do suggest their speedmaster homage as I have good friends that have given in great reviews, and my experience with any pagani that has the Seiko vk63 movement in have been great, but I haven’t handled the speedmaster and therefore did not supply an affiliate link for it. I personally think that’s the proper approach. Thanks for sharing m8!
@@MirrlyonTime I totally get that and there are a ton of bad actors in this space and people who take advantage of their audience. I think you're being a little too hard on yourself though and think it would be completely fine for you to share an affiliate link in that case and if someone is already looking for it they can use it. "Any Pagani that has the Seiko vk63 movement in has been great in my usage, but I haven’t handled the speedmaster personally yet myself. If you are interested in it still however, the link is below". With the huge multitude of often unknown chinese watch brands available upon Aliexpress, Temu, Ebay etc. Some may be truly great value, but some are inevitably going going to be junk costume jewellery, if still amazing value for money unless sellers are profiteering savagely. Reviewers have been able to point out some of the better brands (which may be good indeed), though comparatively little is heard about the poorer ones that seem so tempting, as their sellers are hardly likely to offer them for review... Prospective buyers will be searching reviewers to investigate brands at all price points.
To play Devil's Advocate: 1. AliExpress affiliate links are now all clearly disclosed in UA-cam videos. 2. The UA-cam watch reviewers that make thier livings providing content (100K+ subscribers) need to produce 3 to 6 videos per week, and reviewing that many watches with fully editing the videos is nearly impossible. If a reviewer is familiar with a brand because they have reviewed several other Sea-Gull, Steeldive, Tandorio, or San Martin Watches, it really isn't a problem for them to call out new releases or top sellers, even if they are yet to produce a full review. 3. More problematic is a constant stream of positive reviews, wherein the reviewer is afraid to point out major flaws for fear the brand or seller will cut off further free review items.

These you tube reviews turn into a giant circle jerk when companies pass out watches to reviewers and they all drool about how amazing these watches are, and say little to nothing substantially bad about these watches. Otherwise they wouldn't get free watches to sell on the open market. Their reviews are valueless. They would have credibility by returning all watches to the manufacturer, but that will never happen.
Thanks Andrei! The series was inspired by a mug we have at home that was given to one of my sons I think with the same picture and the iconic line what you talkin bout Willis printed on the mug :) at least this comment made it through haha
I always take any watch "review" with a huge grain of salt. I don't expect any watch reviewer to be making these videos purely from the goodness of their heart. Ain't nobody got time for that. But I do appreciate being shown new watches I'd have probably never discovered on my own. If I'm interested, then I'll dig deeper. Sometimes, I get more information from the comments than from the review. I think it was from the comments section of some video that first exposed Benyar watches for actually being alloy rather than the claimed stainless.
@@michaelhorn8962 yes great points Michael! Whenever you purchase something you neee to do your research. I do pride myself in giving honest reviews even if the watch is free, which it seldom is for me but it won’t be long before I am able to get some more in the magic number seems to be 5k subscribers. Check out this video of a watch that was sent to me for free, and the initial unboxing comments revealed it was a drop ship of an addies dive model. If you are interested in Horology and start a UA-cam channel, you would probably like to get some return on you start up costs and then your time in making your videos. I understand that for you to become a professional youtuber, you need to publish at least three times a week to get to the big bucks, so I don't see there is much of a problem in how they create that revenue. Plus if you are seriously interested in purchasing a Ali watch you will probably find more than one channel reviewing it, for a second opinion.
@@fattmatt200 very true fattmatt nothing wrong with making a return for your work. That said, be upfront about your motives if that’s the case right from the start. Peddling product you haven’t actually had hands on experience is wrong imo, and some reviewers are getting more than just free watches they charge for their reviews. If receiving free watch potentially biases the reviewer (anyone with common sense knows that it does a little) than how much more would getting paid on top of that slant your bias? I’ve seen it happen.
The reviewers I watch are usually upfront with their affiliates, and that they make money from this. I have no issue with this. When I see a watch, I usually look at a number of reviews to get an idea as to whether the reviews are factual.

Interesting topic! It is quite complex and I think there are arguments both ways. I think ultimately there should also be some trust in the audience, us viewers, that many of us are capable of watching objectively and being able to decipher bias from paid reviews whether we know its paid for or not. To be honest im a bit of a cynic and assume there is gonna be bias in videos I watch and skip over all the notifications about whether its sponseres or paid or whatever. I actually dont care so much because Im gonna watch the video objectively and with my own interpretation. But thats me and everyone is different. Also important to have a healthy conversation about it on both sides of the fence. I like how your video doesnt name and shame anyone and your just providing info. There are some comments in here naming and shaming and I dont think thats helpful to anyone or the best approach to "fix" whatever the problem is. Thanks again for this video.
Thanks mk as I said in my video (at least I think I kept it in)’there is nothing wrong with making money doing this, I think the problem lies with some of the practices that show me anyways that some have transitioned slightly from doing this out of the pure love of the hobby and wanting to make money the priority and not the love of watches which leads to compromise, but you are absolutely bang on a viewer with common sense is able to figure out quite quickly whether or not someone is genuinely promoting a watch or brand or is a mere shill for it. Bias cannot be avoided, I admit my bias for Timex over Casio in some of my videos for example, but bias has nothing to do with my biggest pet peeve mentioned here which is promoting watches that you don’t even have or have had, and provide affiliate links for them. That to me is just wrong and I don’t follow channels myself that do this. Great feedback mk thank you for that.

He can say that doesn't influence his "reviews" but it must to some degree - otherwise watch manufacturers would stop supplying him with watches. As a result, no free product to review, so less content for him to make, so less potential revenue from affiliate links and UA-cam. I unsubscribed from his channel.
Well, I have it on good authority that Jody was not just receiving a free watch he was also getting paid for the reviews. In fact, Tandoirio offered to pay me 100 dollars for the review, I refused and said that the watch was payment enough (as I will be able to sell it if I want to), and I don’t do any reviews on watches sent unless I can say what I want to. You too don't get it! Like I said on other channels, you can load these Chinese junk watches with all the specs you want, it still has a Pagani Design stamped logo on it!!! You're just cheating yourself by buying a Rolex clone because you cannot afford it!!! I once took that route but quickly realised that I don't want to put on a chinese watch with a stupid snorkling guy stamped on it just because it looks like a Rolex. Who are we kidding? And everytime you look at that dial, you know that you're just fooling yourself. You see a brand name is everything, whether you like it or not. If you cannot buy a Rolex, you can for only 200 or 300$, buy yourself a nice Seiko or a Citizen or a G-SHOCK or an Orient... These are brands with heritage, brand recognition and durability that you'd be proud to wear. Stop promoting these watches even if you want to start a channel. It is not good advice.
@@cougarbatterie thanks for sharing your opinion cougar. And when I look at the dial I am not fooling myself, nobody is, I know it’s a homage watch. And just because it is a Chinese brand doesn’t mean that it isn’t a good watch m8, so no one is being kidded here, people know what these watches are and like myself many many people who can’t afford a Rolex are more than happy to own a Chinese homage watch. To your point about buying a citizen or a Seiko, I agree, for example why I won’t buy a San Martin. I’ll spend 100 bucks (or 80usd) on a Chinese homage all day and twice on Sunday before I spend 200 more when that could buy as you say a heritage piece. So don’t presume what I or anyone else is feeling (kidding ourselves) when we wear these watches, I am a proud owner of many homage pieces of watches that I cannot afford.
@@MirrlyonTime Sorry my friend, a person who buys basically a copy and paste of a Rolex or an Omega is fooling himself, even if he knows that it is a homage watch. @@cougarbatterie You have a very strong opinion on the matter. And that is fine. Hell, in some ways I agree with you. A company making watches for 100+ years adds something to the design and choices that go into making a watch. There is nothing better than having a model line for 50 years that you keep making small adjustments to in the pursuit of improving the core concept behind the watch. However, that does not always equate to an objectively superior end product. Would I still prefer the heritage over the potentially marginally better components? Personally, yes, absolutely yes.

@@sinjinadams2862 fair enough

@@chosearmandoarmando3864 that’s definitely a way of putting it! Thanks m8
@@Marty4650 yes true that Marty thanks for the insights!
Great points! Thanks for watching m8
I am getting really tired of the incessant shilling on UA-cam. Either AliExpress or microbrand watches. And even the most honest reviewer (which not all of them are!) will see differently the same watch when it's sent for free vs. when it's bought with its own money or on loan for review. Thank you for this video!
Thanks for watching m8
I think most viewers are aware of this, but it is good to remind us 👍 . I don't mind reviewers getting free watches and using affiliate links as long as they declare it AND I see them criticise the watches, if every watch is wondeful something is wrong. I still watch channels that charge fees (finding out who takes a while, they should declare this at the start) if they are entertaining, but take their recommendations with a large pinch of salt.

Theres also a point of sustainability for a watch content creator, once they get to the point of monetisation on YT, affiliate links and the causal promoted videos is that they are not going to hang onto all of their watches that they feature so they would end up selling the ones they bought from AliExpress onto places like ebay as an example.
Yessir, spot on!

Your honesty is appreciated.
@@seangallagher4997 thanks Sean!
To play Devil's Advocate:

Interesting topic! It is quite complex and I think there are arguments both ways.
I’m not jealous, I am happy to see my friends channels growing to be honest.
@@MirrlyonTime uh huh, what you said😈
Couldn't you also start a channel by getting watches from Amazon? (Free returns!)
@@michaelhorn8962 I have never thought of it that way Michael, now that is something to ponder, although I’m sure they would be quick to catch on :) thanks for watching m8
@@MirrlyonTime Amazon might not send you free watches to review, but they ALSO have an affiliate program that pays you for every order placed through the link you post. And some people make a pretty good living this way. Buy something, review it, post a link, and get paid. Of course, this works best with larger channels since the more subscribers you have the more likely that more orders will be placed. And if enough of your subscribers make orders, then it really doesn't matter what you paid for the watch.
@@Marty4650 true Marty but I believe Michael was suggesting buying the watch, reviewing and it returning it since Amazon has such a good return policy hehe, as I said to him wouldn’t take long for them to catch on
I used to watch Jody on Just One More Watch but I soon got sick of his channel when I noticed that EVERY video of his was sponsored content, with the watch supplied by the seller/manufacturer.
Nothing wrong with getting watches sent for free, as long as everything is properly disclosed. I insubbed to Jody’s for that reason
At least Jody tells us he pros and cons. Being paid or not. ⚙️🕐🍸
Jody is the worst culprit, he spent years telling people he wasn’t getting paid when he was! 🤦🏻♂️ he only stopped when I emailed him and told him it was wrong! You can’t play an alarm, claim you only got a free watch all the while charging huge cash fees for your content. It’s outrageous that he got away with it for as long as he did.
@@ILikeWatches2 Interesting information. Thank you. I just remember calling him out that the particular video was sponsored. If he didn’t do that when it was affiliate link sponsoring only then I didn’t notice it. Maybe because I never click on affiliate links. Okay, I am starting to hate him now. Or at least when my Erebus Ascent arrives and it is a bad watch. :D
He now says sponsored because I emailed him and told him to stop lying about getting paid. When reviewers say sponsored they are telling you the charge a cash fee with telling you they charge a cash fee…I think it’s their way of clearing their conscience…it doesn’t go far enough.
@@ILikeWatches2 However, thank you for telling me and thank you for emailing him!
@@ILikeWatches2didn't you get into trouble with UA-cam over something to do with Jodie in the past?
I really despise Ali Express watches, they steal IP and build them with child slave labor. I've bought 2 of them early in my collecting and they are my biggest watch regrets. They both have had problems. I have too much self respect to buy another one.
Thanks m8 appreciate that, and totally understand your point. What ones did you buy?
@@MirrlyonTime Boderry Checkmate and the obligatory Seagull 1963.
@@LenRedeemingTheTime that’s funny the obligatory seagull 1963 haha, I haven’t obliged to that one yet, actually the only thing I like about it is the movement I’m hoping to get a watch with that movement in the future. What about them are your biggest watch regrets?
Child slave labour? Do you have anything to back that statement up?
If these Chinese watches weren't a homage to iconic brands, would you still buy them? Of course not! You just want the looks of a Rolex without paying the hefty price. If this is not cheating on yourself, what is it then? And for God sake, don't ever compare the quality of an addiesdive dive to a Seiko that makes watches since 1881. You're just being ridiculous.
@@cougarbatterie now who is being ridiculous. Just because a company has been making watches since 1881 or whatever doesn’t make them a better watch, a brand yes a watch no. San Martin watches are fantastic and offer far better value for dollar spec wise than a 200 dollar Seiko. And the answer to your question, would I buy an 80 dollar watch from aliexpress if it didn’t look like a Rolex, is yes, since they make good watches for the money. Move on and troll someone else m8, I believe the term used to describe you is watch snob, and you’re a big one
@@MirrlyonTime Listen how pathetic you are: did you just say that a company that makes watches since 1881, doesn't mean that they make better watches then a 5 year old Chinese brand that buys Miyota movement from the Japanese and copy great brands with zero innovation! Did you just say that?!!!😂😂😂 Yep, you're a hopeless case!
But that is a personal opinion, based on my values. Just like yours is your own personal taste and opinion. Others might have a different opinion that is equally valid (or invalid) from an objective stance. You should also consider the fact that you are interacting with a guy that is doing videos as a passion project to reflect what he likes about collecting watches. He is not obligated to cater to anyone else's tastes than his own. Be respectful or move along.
Great video man. Truth. 🍸🍸
Thanks Norm!
