I went to Verdun last year The whole area is covered in cemeteries bunkers forts museums trenches etc it doesn't feel a 100 years ago there, actually the whole of Northern France is full of battlefields from three Franco-German wars
Bunkers are primarily from the first world war, as during the second one all of the bunkers were centralized on the modern border. During WW1 though there was a larger battle for the country and forts were built all around France.

Every weekend the army would be firing off Arty , it would go on all night long and you could feel the impacts, it would shake the house a bit. after a while you would be able to tell the difference of incoming and outgoing rounds. it was scary yet calming. one night of our scheduled barrage a round came close to the neighborhood and shook the whole neighborhood awake, my Father being a combat vet during heavy fighting in Baghdad woke up in such a fright that he began pacing around the house trying to calm down, it took about a hour or so but he kept muttering "this aint shit this aint shit " on his way back up stairs. he later told me when we moved back state side that he couldnt stand the Arty some nights, being a naive teenager at the time i replied with "i like it sounds cool and soothing" he then said its not soothing when you see a friend get blown up. I now listen to these noises think of the men who had to endure such torture day and night. Artillary still plagues the battlfields today ...what a world we live in.

I have readed during ww1, artillery fire could be heread within the distance of 200 kilometers and more. sounded similar to a thunderstorm, but not excatly like a thunderstorm.
I was staying at short distance from the Beaumont-Hamel battlefield this past January 2018 when I woke up during the night and heard this sound. It only lasted for about 15 to 20 seconds.

I can believe that. Lots of creepy stuff go on around those famous battles. I’ve had some creep experiences around Atlanta and north western Georgia. Artilary musket fire and men screaming. Creepy stuff.

The main purpose of artillery bombardment isn't to kill the enemy, but to scare and disorient them and destroy fortifications. All to make it easier for the attack that is supposed to come directly after.
What absolutely stuns me is that when you weren’t even fighting or sitting through artillery barrages, this is what you would hear still. No matter what you were doing, or where you were, the shells never stop
I believe this was the battle of Verdun, to this day that battlefield is off limits due to the thousands of ordinances not being detonated on impact. Trespassers have entered and some or most have never came out, and no one will go in to retrieve them for obvious reasons. Learn about this battle, it was horrific and brutal, the campaign started with a order of more than a million artillery shells and 850 artillery pieces, just on the German side.
I live in a rural area that has a hill that separates us from a big town and at night the sky is lit so you can look out the open window with one earphone in at this and stare at it, the horizon is on fire and I pretend that's where the artillery is hitting and it's actually very realistic

Not actual audio from the war. Btw, all the audio you hear from WW1 videos/documentaries are exactly this, modern audio re-creation. Silent movies, remember?
