Glynis was the bass player in Chicago band Red Red Meat. She contracted HIV at some point and eventually got sick with AIDS. My bandmate Ken was her lover during that time. I heard Glynis' family was very Christian and they refused to believe she was so sick or thought religion would save her. Hence, "bury your head in the sand." I don't think she got any treatment until the very end. I think the song was trying to address people's responses to her death, especially in the Chicago music scene.
I was in a band with one of Glynis' former boyfriends when this song came out (the scarecrow reference was to a former band of his). Within a few months he was dead. We didn't even know that he was dying at the time. :-( If AZT had been widely available at the time, both he and Glynis probably would have lived a lot longer. I remember hearing this song on the radio right before he died. Little did I know that the story was about to touch my own life. God bless you, Ken. RIP.
Billy looks so wholesome here! It's difficult to believe that the psycho hellraiser lord of pain look from the Adore years is the same bloke. Great song!
now a song to be proud of iv just discovered this song and my name ofcourse is glynis. my sister is called angie after the rollings stones song now i can be cool to whoo hoo!
I always loved the main melody to this song. Something about it always puts me in a good mood and reminds me of my fellow pumpkin heads when we were younger. Not a care in the world. Just what polyester blend shirt and brown grandpa slacks to wear with airwalks or chucks were the only worries.
i d thought u d like... the pumpkins had such a different sound all throughout their existence- no song or album sounded the same- yet it was all AWESOME
funny story, I found a Cat and named it Glynis after this song... a few months go by and find out the cat is actually a male.... Glynis changes into Guiness very easily Great song, I'm glad I was able to track down a copy of the No Alternative CD. I wish more SP fans knew about this song though I know the good ones do.
funny, i was SURE it was "who turn their backs on their sin." given the context of the song, I was SURE. (still not entirely sure i am wrong in fact, but i am stubborn like that.)

I think it's funny that people say Billy Corgan has changed a lot. This song proves that he hasn't changed all that much because it sounds like a song from Peach Peel Residency or The Fillmore Residency.
That's what it sounds like to me, and it definitely makes the most sense. Billy's a pretty simple lyricist (not a bad thing), so if it fits best (grace and God leads best to sins, not sick), it's probably that.

Love James Iha's background singing. The real Pumpkins.
That was one brave high note.

Whenever I feel sad, I watch this video and it cheers me up sooooo sososo much! Hurrah for Billy!
3:07 - James w/ the wah pedal solo and backup vocals helps make the song ending epic.
I've never heard Billy sing this good live.
was totally thinking that. he sounds great here.
Easily in the top 10 best songs Billy has ever written!
That mildly funky guitar towards the end is so unexpected and lovely. Billy makes me desire paisly.
Billy looks so wholesome here! It's difficult to believe that the psycho hellraiser lord of pain look from the Adore years is the same bloke.
Great song!

RIP Glynis.....Love you and see you in heaven honey!
Great tune, and a flawless performance.

Glynis Glynis was real person....an acquaintance who died young of heroin OD

I love seeing this. I used to have it on videotape years ago with a bunch of other Pumpkins stuff. One of their best peformances for sure. :)

funny, i was SURE it was "who turn their backs on their sin." given the context of the song, I was SURE. (still not entirely sure i am wrong in fact, but i am stubborn like that.)

Naouw, this is how they are supposed to sound.
wow, theres like 3 octaves throughout this song. Billy's voice used to be so versatile
Note the MTV dancers in the background, not as extreme as "The Word" Dancers in the UK.
wow
the guitar melody to this song is the same as...............
"sheets of empty canves..."
but its still i great song!
What dvd/show is this from

@EyesofEstranged It's just you.

He was balding, so he shaved his hair, that's all. You can see his receding hairline on some Mellon Collie-era photos. He went goth from that point...

Glynis Glynis was real person....an acquaintance who died young of heroin OD
me
Wtf are you talking about?
*highschool
Why does the title say "Glynis - The Smashing Pumpkins"?? I thought Glynis was the name of the song not the band??
Like it fucking matters
billy terribly missed that high note at the end.
Та хуй вам/там-Нірвана вирвала величезний шматок.
