Meh, to an extent. People give in to a lot of the influences that surround them, but they also click on what they want to see. Now tell me, would you rather read a scientific journal about how social media controls people (methodology, data points, test groups, findings, and so on...), or some article that sums up the big numbers and juicy stats without any insight. I can tell you what most people would want to look at. Do you blame the media for trying to get clicks in that manner, or is it a little more nuanced? I think the media is a company that tries to give consumers what they want. If journalism with integrity was getting clicks, then no one would be making garbage, click bait news articles. But here we are...

The docuseries about the early years of the Ukraine conflict were amazing, binged it earlier this year before Russia officially declared war. I haven't really cared about Vice since 2014 but that series is something amazing and the journalists were the reason why it shined.

Vice has always been touch and go. They have always had some amazing journalists pushing the boundaries (sneaking into North Korea, interviewing warlords in Africa, etc. etc.) ... on the other hand they have always had their fair share of incredibly vapid stories. Their best content is often their most edgy/boundary pushing -- which is difficult to monetize. As a consequence with more outside funding, higher-ups within the company started promoting more of the vapid stories as they were easier to sell ad space on.

Moon literally fails at some of the most basic principles of good journalism and research. I don't understand how so many people can't see that.

I don't understand people who comment just to say something without explaining their POV. Makes your shit look weak lol.
@@HackerArmy03 This video is mostly correct, it's more a critique of his entire body of work. The #1 thing is that he makes unsubstantiated claims and frequently misrepresents the significance of relationships between things. It doesn't matter how small or insignificant the claim is, a claim requires proof. 15:20 He says "and in all likelihood, it's only going to get worse from here" okay, what makes it likely to get worse? I'm not being picky or going into semantics, that's something that any college-level English professor would underline on a paper to require explanation. Not to mention, I have actually kept up with some of Vice's new content and everything I see suggests the opposite of that claim.
He presents his videos as journalism/documentary but doesn't distinguish when he's sharing his own personal perspective so he ends up making a factual claim and and then moves on without citing anything, essentially he is failing to remain objective. People see nothing wrong with him because "he provides proof for his claims" but the issue that his proof is not proportional to the size of the claim he is making. In academic research it can be notoriously hard to establish a causal relationship between two things so if you do so then the evidence needs to be indisputable. He frequently tries to claim causal relationships between things without substantial proof. For example, in one video he pretty much claimed that Blackrock is THE reason, not one of many, for Netflix's drop in quality. In that entire 7 minute section of the video he explained all about ESG scores and how Blackrock is invested in Netflix, and yet he still failed to provide any evidence that rules out other causes.
If a journalist from a major news network began writing news articles that read like Moon's transcripts he would be getting called out for it. Given that many people are now watching these videos and treating them as the full account of the truth I think it's fair to hold him to the same standards. And BTW he's not the only one, I've seen several YT documentary creators starting to pop up recently who are way too comfortable making claims without providing evidence for them.
