- Today, remember the extraordinary life of the aviator Amelia Earhart who was born on July 24th, 1897. Amelia Earhart is most well-known for becoming the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean and for her ill-fated final voyage to become the first woman to circumnavigate the globe. However, Earhart set numerous records throughout her aviation career, each time empowering women and inspiring the world with her immense tenacity and courage.
In June 1928, Earhart penned her powerful poem "Courage:”
Courage is the price that Life
exacts for granting peace.
The soul that knows it not,
knows no release
from little things:
Knows not the livid loneliness of fear, Nor mountain heights where bitter joy
can hear
The sound of wings.
How can life grant us boon of living,
compensate
For dull gray ugliness and pregnant hate
Unless we dare
The soul’s dominion? Each time we make a choice, we pay
With courage to behold the resistless day,
And count it fair.
Composer Christopher Tin explores the themes of this poem and pays tribute to Earhart’s role in aviation history in his work “To Shiver the Sky,” an oratorio about mankind’s quest to soar in the sky.
We hope you enjoy “Courage” from Christopher Tin’s “To Shiver the Sky.”
