  • A lovely low-pass to end the day after a beautiful cross country flight. During the pass, the glider is flying at VNE which is approximately 270 kph in the LS4.

The 5 m refers to sea level, right?

didn't you have a low pass of the ls2 in your Instagram story as well? I'm genuinely interested to see the footage of that and the landing, since the ls2 has flaps as air brakes

Wonderful pass. Every member of the Crusaders Gliding Club in Cyprus was allowed to "Beat up the strip" on their last flight before leaving the club/island/forces regiment. I did mine at 100knots in a Czech Blanik in 1976. Sadly never flown again since that day, and now restricted to a wheelchair. Thank you for sharing 😊

sorry to hear, are you in a wheelchair because of a crash in the last flight, or are you unable to fly because of something that led to your medical cobdition ?

@@davidweaver4702 I'm sorry to hear it. FYI, maybe you can try again. In Spain, for example, we have FIs training disabled students at "Las Sillas Voladoras" (Flying Chairs). Just as cars have been adapted to manual handling, gliders have been adapted to manual handling...

Air shows are so dull these days I don’t go to them anymore

Is it worth the risk? You can see a bird at 0:07 and 0:48 in close proximity. A direct hit at 3m AGL would be a nightmare and there is a lot more that can go wrong very quickly. In some planes the trim or flaps can readjust if the forces are high and there is a little turbulence. If you have this happen during a low pass its game over. I hope you know what you are doing and have considered everything.

@James Bond I disagree. I would even argue that at least for Germany it is an illegal maneuver since you are required to stay above 500ft except for landing or if steering the craft does require getting lower (e.g. ridge soaring). There a competitions with a finish line but it is not the standard approach today. Many competitions switched to finish circle with a decent elevation to get to the airport safely. I know of at least one fatal accident in a competition where the low pass was messed up.
The maneuver is more complex than many people think. The margin for error minimal. Think carefully if you want to accept these risks in your flying.

@@B14kh4r4z @Fabian At my local airfield maneuvers like this have been "banned" (more like strongly discouraged) for quite some time now. Not only is it unnessecary risky (if you push it too far), but it also has a bad influence on the younglings who are still learning. It may be ok for experienced pilots to do, but we already had some incidents due to juvenility from underage fuckups. People still occasionally do a low pass, but it is met with disapproval by most seasoned pilots.

THE FUN POLICE STRIKE...........and how safe is the finish circle method? Why do so many top competition pilots dislike it, hey? He wasn't even burning any worms at that height - go and wrap yourself up in cotton wool.........

Simon, I like your Channel! But these kind of illustration is unnecessary 🥴 Think of your role model function!
Looks really nice, but dangerous when you don't know what you're doing! You're a good glider glider pilot but other pilots are maybe not so skilled like you... Don't encourage them to follow suit😉

Hi Philipp! I really appreciate your comment! I do think about what is acceptable and what not. I hope it's clear that these things shouldn't be done without careful planning, but perhaps I should put some more emphasis on it in later videos. See you in the air!
