Thank you for your precise (and I'm sure 100% accurate) simple to understand explanations of ALL caravan weights!!! If I ever upgrade vans, I'll come to Adelaide to see you guys, Cheers!
Hi Steve. Great videos!!!! So with the Tare weight of the van, if I've ordered the van with AGM batteries as standard and then later I install lighter lithium batteries do I need to get the plate re stamped? I only ask because if the obvious weight difference between the batteries allows me to have more "stuff" to pack (that is the battery weight difference) and im weighed and Im technically under but over as per the plate how do I get on?? Thanks
Hi Peter, thanks for your comments and question. Yes, your van weight will drop (Tare) a bit with the addition of the lithium's. You would need to have it professionally weighed and re-plated to show the change. Or, if you weigh the out going batteries and then the new lithiums it will give you a good idea of your saving without having to change anything...you now know how much extr load you can use. When they do weight checks they only worry about your ATM (van and payload) not your Tare.
Hi Steven. Very well explained. I have one question though. I have read that the stamped Tare weight of the caravan is the default factory weight before dealers install any options, and hence dealers quote generic ATM weights of their models on their websites. Are they doing the wrong thing if this is the case, which would explain why people buy a caravan only to find the Tare weight is much heavier than stamped on the plate.
Thanks Astro! The dealers don't normally fit too much to a factory caravan. At most they may do things like a toolbox, diesel heater or some sirocco fans. This might add 50 - 70kg at most. The van from the factory should be tare as it rolls out the door.
Good question! Each state in Australia has different requirements for increasing your ATM. What state are you in? Feel free to give us a call (Steven).

Never seen it explained so simply. Thanks heaps
You're welcome!
Best video I’ve seen explaining this important aspect. Well done and thank you
Wow, thanks!
Appreciate the feedback.

Great video, thanks. Why is such a discrepancy between the ATM and the axel capacity and how do you get an increase in the ATM?

@@adelaiderv I am in Victoria, I don't understand why a van with an Axel of 3000 has only 2750 ATM.
