  • @stevep2073

    That advice to set your psi at 50 being half your speed is just silly, wrong and dangerous. Perhaps when he says it’s the “general rule of thumb out there in caravan land” he’s referring to Australian built dual axle vans? I don’t know I don’t have one. I do know if I followed that advice for my dual axle Euro van, I’d be running at 20% over inflated. Similarly if my friend with a single axle van followed it, he’d be running his at 25% under inflated. I do a proper calc using the load rating and I don’t use the ATM as per this video; I use the actual weight on the axles because that’s what the tyres are supporting. I suggest this video be removed.

    Have a tandem caravan near enough to 3T weight. Independent coil non-load sharing suspension. 245/75r16 LT tyres (85psi max pressure), load rating of 121. I tend to use a "4psi increase over cold when at operating temp" benchmark for most vehicles. Based on this I run 62psi in the tyres and still get a 6psi increase when driving on tarmac on a fine 25C day. Tyre temps sitting at about 30-32C which I am comfortable with and the primary reason I don't bump up the pressure. Have 265/70r17 LT 123LR tyres on the tow vehicle. Rears get an additional 10psi (to 46psi) when towing and sit at about 50-51psi when at operating temp. I think 50psi would kill my caravan tyres real fast. Calculations give a starting point but all tyres/vehicles/conditions and driving styles will be different, better to keep an eye on tyre temp and pressure changes than apply a rule in blind faith. Spend $50 on a decent gauge and then spend 5 minutes checking pressures after a decent drive. Then you will KNOW if your tyres are too high or too low.

    The calculation doesn’t appear right for my single axle van. The recommended psi is 75. No way I would be putting 75psi in my tyres. I run them at 50psi on the black top and 30psi on outback roads.

    Pretty sure the majority of the temperature increase is from sidewall flex not "road heat".

    Rather than using the ATM, I would have thought it made more sense to use the GTM given this is the part of the van weight that sits on the road and discounts the towball download weight borne by the tow vehicle. That said, appreciate the advice being given. I have checked tyre pressure recommendation with my dealer several times and am more than convinced I’ve been getting the wrong advice for years now.

    Thanks for taking the time to put this together and to explain. But using your calculations, on my single axle 18 foot full off road van with an ATM of 3200 would be around 100 PSI. This seems extremely high. Considering the max the tyres can go is 80psi the tyres I am running are Mickey Thompson BAJA LEGEND EXP 295/70R18 129-Q (1850kg) I am currently running 65 psi on the bitumen (up to 100 km) and off road with corrugations 50 psi and generally keep speed down to (60 km or less depending on road condition) I would welcome your feedback on this. Thanks. Cheers

      @adelaiderv 3 дні тому

      It seems there are certainly some outliers that don't fit the equation, especially heavier single axle vans. The 4 PSI rule should still apply though, so as long as you meet that you should be fine.

    • @alecmarra8124
      @alecmarra8124 2 дні тому

      @adelaiderv thanks for your reply. This is the calculation method I follow Maximum Inflation Pressure: 80 PSI Caravan ATM Weight: 3200 Kg’s To determine the correct tyre pressure: Start by dividing the maximum pressure for the tyre (80 PSI) by its load rating (1750 Kg’s): 80 ÷ 1750kg = 0.045714285 (Max Pressure for the tyre divided by load rating) Next, multiply this result by half the weight of the caravan (ATM 3200kg ÷ 2) = (1600kg) (since it’s a single axle caravan): 0.045714285 x (1600kg / 2) = 73.1428 PSI (inflation factor times half the weight of the caravan) So, the appropriate tyre pressure for my single axle caravan is 73.1428 PSI.

    Load rating is important also, as with each individual tyre there is different load rating or how much weigh they can carry. For example, on our single axle, 18 ft Wild Child, our big off road family van, they have to have about 60 - 70psi in the tyres, as anything less than that on a highway, the tyre isn’t actually rated to carry the weight that you have put on it. From the marvel web site

      How did they know the weight, roads or conditions of your car/trailer as you use it. It is a good starting point but you should use a gauge and some common sense rather than assume the plate is going to be correct for your situation. My current work vehicle has had three completely different sets of tyres. Michelin, Bridgestone and Continental. All three had the same size and load rating. I ran pressures with a 4psi difference going from the Michelin to the Bridgestone. Bridgestone had a much sturdier carcass. Continentals sit about mid way between them pressure wise. If I followed the placard the Bridgestones would have been overinflated (came with Michelins).

    My AVan single axel has a loaded weight of 1935kg, and by your tyre pressure calculation, tyres should be around 60psi. My compliance plate says 34psi. Next time we're on the road I'll do the pressure check after an hour to check see where we are with the "4 psi rule", but I'm confused by AVan's pressure recomendation.

    • @adelaiderv

    Hi Dave, thanks for the useful (and timely) video. However, as per other comments below, the numbers are not quite crunching correctly for my application. I have a 2018 Goldstream Wing 3ST (single independent axle full Offroad spec) with 15x7 rims, and newly fitted Falken Wildpeak AT3W tyres in 31-10.5.15 sizing or 265/75/15. The camper trailer tare is 1525kg, and ATM is 2000kg. Tyre placard in the camper states min cold px of 250 kpa (36PSI) and max cold px of 350kpa (50PSI). When I crunch the numbers as per your video, I ended up with a recommended 47.93PSI for 1525kg, and 62.85PSI for 2000kg.. What would you advise for my application?

    • @martynhuteau2022

    • @adelaiderv

      It would probably be safest to start with 47 as it's within the recommendations of Goldstream, then drive for an hour or so before checking the increase in pressure. Go off the 4 PSI rule (though for LT tyres it can be actually be between 4 and 6 PSI and still be suitable). It may take a few drives to dial it in, but once you figure it out you'll always know.

      You would get a higher PSI on a single axle caravan as the tyres are most likely taking more weight than they would on a tandem axle van, so they require a higher pressure for the same footprint. Be mindful of the max PSI, if it's 80 PSI you wouldn't want to go past 75 PSI cold. Stick with 45 PSI and go off the 4 PSI rule, increase as necessary.

      Your joking right That tyre psi rating is the maximum and what the speed and load index where setby at maximum psi

    Good advice. Only thing I would add is the 4 to 5psi variation from cold to hot can vary a lot depending on the conditions. My car and van both have tyre pressure monitor systems and on cold, wet roads the tyre temp will only vary 2 or 3 degrees. On really hot days the pressure can vary 6 to 7 degrees. If driving on a dry road and suddenly the road becomes wet the tyre pressures will drop a few degrees. Something to be aware of.

    When I use this calaculation with my current van I get a recommended PSI of 92.7?? I have a single axle van with LT tyres, ATM of 2950 kg. Clearly doesnt make sense here. How does this calculation take into account TBM at say 300kg reduces weight on axle and load factor of the tyre, in my case 1450kg? I would welcome your feedback on this. Thanks.

      I have the same issue, single axle van with an ATM of 2750kgs. My PSI using this method is 87psi, clearly not correct. Did you get a response from Adelaide RV?

      Yes, looks like heavier single axle vans and very light tandem axel vans skew the calculations a fair bit. Checking your pressures with the 4 PSI rule would be best.

    The ‘passenger car’ tyre calculation does work for LT tyres. The big issue for vans is the cheap crap tyres that they come with being ‘less than truthful’. LT tyres have a higher max load and pressure, and stronger and stiffer construction (to Facilitate higher load and psi ratings). If a tyre is being truthful with its ratings, the max load, max psi, weight per wheel formula will lead to the correct PSI (ie 40 in your van example). But wouldn’t trust many OEM van supplied tyres to run at 80 psi and with 6t (to max out 123 rated tyres) of van weight at 100kph.

    That calculation and the way you explained it is the first time in my life (and I've been around for more than a few years) that the PSI has an actual meaning in my head. It is LITERALLY pounds per square inch! Amazing, thanks!

      I'm glad you found out about PSI! Here's some other fun and fascinating information about pressure - the pressure of all the air above and all around you (at sea level) is call 1 bar. 1 bar is 14.5 PSI (15 in round numbers) so every square inch of your skin has 15 PSI 'pressing' on to it (0 bar in space). Knowing 1 bar is ~15 PSI is a handy conversion. Also, you might see pressure expressed a kPa, that's kilopascals (the capital P is because it represents the surname of the French mathematician and physicist Blaise Pascal) and 1 bar is the same as 100 kPa. PS: so 1 bar represents 1 atmosphere of pressure, but this can vary according to height above sea level and weather conditions. Pressure in the atmosphere is measured using a barometer (hence bar) and a barometer which is also used to forecast the weather. Gee - I didn't think I was going to write so much. Hope you made it to the end. Well done if you did! PPS - if you swim down 10 meters under water, the pressure is 2 bar. So 10m of water produces the same amount of pressure (1 bar) as 100 km (62 miles) of air (also 1 bar)! That's the pressure caused by the weight of all the air above you!

      That's the maximum the tyres can be inflated to. There should be another saying the recommended tyre pressures for normal use.

    Genarator 1200 bucks ( chinese will do the job with 5 year warranty), rip- off 12 v dealers ,accessories suppliers , are rubbing there hands together when grey nomads are wandering in, to upgrade to a inverter system 6 to 8 k, depending on what you want to run, but min 6k just for an A/C . Unless you're 24/7 on the road, it doesn't equate. It would be like solar panels back up batteries on your home and never turning the power. Next, you will be buying electric cars to tow your 2.5 ton van and getting a maximum of 150k per charge. Dont get me wrong, l want green! But at what cost?

    Great presentation. Thank you!! I have the same setup as the TerritoryX but in a Leader Gold, Dirt Roader (purchased from a different dealer). After 10,000kms on the caravan, I will say that having the Manager Alpha50 under the bed is a disaster. It gets SO hot under the bed, the mattress feels like I have an electric blanket on. I strongly recommend keeping the battery charger away from the bed, and ideally out of the main cabin of the caravan altogether. I'm currently looking for someone who is able to relocate my Alpha50.

      Thank you for sharing your experience with the Alpha50, the heat generated by it is certainly something to consider. Perhaps it could be moved to a tunnel boot. Good luck on finding a solution!

    Good info Jeb. I always put a little bit of water back into the cassette once it has been emptied and cleaned so that when I drop the sachet inside the cassette it is good to go for next use.
