I was raised on 1980's Kenworth T600's. Nostalgia from all those summer vacations over the road with my father instilled the love of trucking in me that still burns today.
You can't get a Detroit in a 2020 Volvo. I'm not sure you ever could 🤔 to my knowledge. The Coronado and Century class are actually Columbia's. They just have different hoods and warranties. And youre right, they rattle cause their freight shakers. Navistar LT is an old Prostar with a new hood and redesigned interior and serves its purpose. Every truck has a purpose. Vocational/ off road will be Paccar, Westerns, Mack's. OTR would be the VNL and modern Cascadia. Both OE 12 speed automated trannys are far superior than an Eaton 12 or 18 auto. You sound like a Harley guy. Lots of chrome, looks tough, sounds great, rides heavy but lost a lot of its reliability. Pete/ KW makes great cabs but has really lost their ability to grow much marketshare for OTR due to the inability to come up with a reliable proprietary engine platform thar is fuel efficient.
surprisingly Dean, I was picking the same ones you did, while I was watching the video, I feel almost like I know a lot about trucks now. Have an Awesomeness week, thanks for the vid
I like it, it’s got great power and always feels planted because of the great build quality all the steel. But a lot of bigger guys don’t like them because they’re a bit cramped inside. The only thing I hate about the Mack’s is the turning radius, it’s literally half of a freightliner. But overall they’re pretty nice inside
Thats my son's Western Star its been a great truck. Its too bad the 4900EX are no longer being produced he's says its is much better than the Petrrbilt 379 he had before
I have a 99 W900 86” studio sleeper 1MM 600 Cat 18 over 3:55 rears 11R 25:5 tall rubber last truck I will build and drive. Sure feels good going through a level one inspection officer asking if it is really a 99 like title says because they have new trucks not even a year or two old failing inspection.
I have an 08 Pete 367 tri-ax dump (I work construction), the DOT guys can't believe the truck is an 08 despite hauling aggregate and asphalt daily...only thing I've ever been gigged for was a light being out which I replaced on the spot since I always carry a couple spare marker lights in the truck.
My number one pick is the 2022 international lt, I just got issued a brand new one at my current company and it is the nicest truck I have ever driven. Personally I do have a soft spot for KW’s in general and I prefer the newer stuff because it’s more economical and generally comes with more modern day creature comforts than any of the long nose trucks.
@@aaronsanborn4291 What are you hauling and where are you hauling it? Mine’s got the cummins x15, I’m hauling van trailers across the southern midwest, and with the way my company set up the truck I’m getting 7.4 mpg.
4:50 In the U.S.A. International LT's are not available with the DD15, instead you can get the A26 engine or the cummins like you mentioned. In Canada is it possible to get a Detroit in a new International ??
All I can go by is my own novice experience. I drove around 30 newer Cascadias as a slip seater. I found all but one of them to be lacking to atrocious. The inconsistencies were glaring. Some had touchy brakes and throttle and some easier, but not smooth. All of them except one had nice tight steering for about ten miles and then it got loosey goosey from there. Controls varied too much from year to year models. One would have the radio in close reach and have controls on the steering wheel, and another would have the radio far to the right and for me a real stretch, but then NO contols on the steering wheel. Compare that to a 2016 international and it seems like a diamond in the rough. smooth braking, throttle, and steering. Not too much creature comforts and not very advanced smart cruise control, but driving it made my day easy.
Kenworth is by far the best truck I've driven over all...I've driven W900s and T800s and loved them both especially with Cat motors in them.... comfortable and power for days (I work in the woods and construction)...I've driven every major brand in the U.S., I also liked driving the International 9200, 9300 and 9400 series with a Cat or Detroit under the hood. I hated driving Western Star and Mack.
Why compare Pete to Pete, kw to kw, freightliner to freightliner? Why not the 1999 kw w900 vs the 1999 Pete 379. Now that's a comparison of real trucks. Everyone will have a different option on that. But I was interested one your take I know I'm going w900 over Pete. But that's because I think Pete engineers aren't smart enough to hang a clutch pedal. Which makes the Pete so awkward use the clutch.
The VEST system sucks especially when you are driving through switchbacks in the mountains or going around a slight curve you know a barely steep bend in the road that you as a driver know you can take at speed without even slowing any, but yet this ignorant system slams the brakes for you constantly. It will slam the brakes for a big enough bug that crosses one of the sensors on the front bumper. Not to mention the system has started giving my company and me tons of issues with the ABS, TCS and Stability Tract LIGHTS that come on because of one of their ten thousand sensors that Volvo's super smart engineers (NOT) thought would be a good idea to cause one's ECU to shutdown and throw check engine and stop engine lights all because of an ABS and or TCS issue. My Volvo has been at the dealership for three weeks now while they chase what it could be a bare wire causing a shortage not yet been found but in the meantime they have replaced the vehicle ECU, the ABS module, the brake ECU and now the steering wheel angle position sensor also apart of the BEST SYSTEM EVER (NOT) LOL the VEST system but it the steering wheel angle position sensor is going to be replaced today if the lineup and recalibration of said sensor doesn't fix the issues. The system shut the engine down because the steering angle position sensor on the computer was showing it was off 400° degrees when the steering wheel was straight happened because of the roads in Louisiana. Bopefully after today I will be back on the road with it but during said down time I've been driving a 94 Peterbilt unfortunately it's a daycab otherwise I would stay in it without a doubt, but kind of hard to be OTR on a daycab lol. She has a 3406 B model CAT in her and she also has 1.7 million miles and she gives us zero problems. The company has owned it since new and according to them and their mechanics it has never been rebuilt just new injectors a few years back. Give me that old iron any day over this computerized nonsense! Sorry about the long comment but I said all that to warn anyone that is an Owner Op and thinking of purchasing one of these Volvo's with this option to stay away, unless you plan on leasing and getting a new one every couple of years. My Volvo would be awesome and pulls like crazy and rides and drives like a dream we ordered it with the Cummins instead of the Volvo engine but she runs and pulls like a champ if it wasn't for that after treatment nonsense def etc and the vest system issues by the way I'm a Peterbilt man but you can only drive what your company offers so I love my Volvo except for the nonsense extras that in my opinion isn't needed but I digress. Over and out my brother's and sister's of the road, I and my family appreciate each and every one of you and your service and sacrifice we all make of being away from our families for the collective good of our countries and the people there in to keep our shelves stocked, gas stations full and everything else we the truckers bring which is (EVERYTHING). Keep the rubber side down and the shiny sides up over and out 10/4!
No, the newer engines don't last as long as the order ones and they don't the fuel mileage the older trucks are capable of, I spent 40 years as an owner operator and just retired and the newest truck I ever owned was a 1999 and it averaged 9.2 mpg with a 12.7 Detroit Diesel and the one before that did 8.1 mpg with a mechanical Cat.
If Volvo could fix their wiring system/sensor problems, they could most likely take over from Freightliner, as North American sales leader. Two friends, love the ride, but at last report, will not buy another. One will retire, the other will switch to Freightliner, most likely. I'm used to Volvo Penta motors, in mining equipment, just shy of two years they start having sensor and harness issues. Love Caterpillar.
@NorthAmerican-Trucking-News No sir, I was interested in a review but can't find much on it. I like the fact it has a Detroit motor and a large sleeper, and I believe a steel body. Mix between the old and new. I Googled the mpg claiming 7.6 average, not sure how true that is.
In australia they are prefering the European cab over trucks. More comfortable and economical. Then the scania v8 770hp is more powerful than the cummins volvo and mack.
If I had an unlimited budget I’d get a new Cascadia double bunk glider kit Detroit 12.7L 600hp, 18sp, 3.08 gears, steer air ride, dual wheels, and no transfer case with rear tandem lift.
@@lifedrivefitness9123 It’s a setup to get over 10mpg and still run paper logs. Put a Bullydog tuner and FASS fuel pump on the engine. Use a controller to drop the front air suspension down at speed and install side skirts that cover the rear wheels and longer cab fairings. It won’t be a long hood Peterbilt but you’ll save $1000+ a week in fuel. I wish I could have a truck like that but you don’t get what you want in life.

He complaines about the kenworth having close seating but doesn't mention it with the peterbuilt even though they share the same cab basically, ET Transport usually puts out informative videos but I have found none of that here. No comparison between the older trucks vs newer trucks, the older trucks are capable of great fuel mileage vs the new choked of emissions trucks the real problem is very few people know how to set up a truck for fuel mileage, example my 99 FLD120 I just sold got 9.2 mpg consistently.
Great catch. I have mentioned in a few comments already that I mistakenly put in the Detroit engine. I agree the Kenworth and Peterbilt share Very close cab size I just find personally the Peterbilt to be better displaced inside.
