  • On this episode of Flashback, let's talk about the first two major upgrades that I made to my trusty Epson Equity II. We'll also talk about the first couple of games that I got to play in color, Red Baron and Arkanoid II: Revenge of Doh, and more importantly talk about one of my favorite PC titles of all time; SimCity! Lastly, we'll talk about dialing into the local Cray supercomputer and using it to connect to far off places, literally and figuratively! All this and more on this episode of CGQ Flashback!
    As I said in the video, I am moving the mail segment to the pickups videos. That being said, everything sent in to the show will still be shown on-camera. If you'd like to send something in, including sending in a post card (which will get an official CGQ postcard sent back to you), you can do so at:

    Just so you know, I wouldn’t be upset if these Flashback episodes continued to gain in length. If you have the memories to share and the time to share them, I’ll certainly have the time to thoroughly enjoy them, and also reminisce about my own.

      Cool, man. To be honest, I make this without regard to length, so they're as long as they need to be for me to get all of my thoughts out. Probably why they're so long! I used to try to keep the videos shorter, but there's really no reason for that, so now I just wing it.

    Going back to a comment you made about Red Baron. Balloons were used for observation going all the way back to early part of the 19th century. Balloons using had just an observer or two and were mostly unarmed, the one fortunate thing for the observer was they usually wore a parachute so they could bail if the balloon came under attack. Sim City was great, more good memories Chris!

    Oh dude, I was all over BBS's when I was a kid! I know exactly of what you speak and am very much looking forward to your episode on it (I used some kind of BBS called Telex or Telnex or something like that). I don't remember the games I played, but one was Star Trek/Wars-styled and the other was like a Medieval themed game. There were a bunch of local people that played, but I was only 13-14 at the time I played it. Thanks so much as usual Chris!

    Hey Chris, thanks for another great trip down memory lane! Similar to your memories (as always) I had an old IBM PC and it was very very basic but man how I loved that machine. Nothing fancy but hey, it was still a PC we could do school work on and play golf ⛳ with my dad on it..awesome...
    In other words we had the word possessing program called MS WORKS, when others had MS WORD. If you catch my drift... It was pretty dated but who cares right...that same year I got to have a sleepover at my friends house down the road and his family had a newer advanced pc with a nice color display, maybe a gateway or Tandy? and he had the original Sim City game. First time I experienced the game.
    We stayed up all night long building our awesome city and drinking mountain dew sodas, i instantly fell in love with the game. We would save the game state and then switch over to a game called gorilla? 2 gorillas standing on top of buildings and the object was to throw a banana at your opponent with the proper angle and velocity...
    You type in your desired angle and velocity and hope your banana hit its mark. Trial and error game. Type in gorilla and you can see a quick demo of the game on UA-cam..... Anyway....Best time ever.
    The next morning I wanted so very badly to be able to play the game on our own home computer. His father was gracious enough to copy the game for me onto 2 floppy disks. I returned home to My beloved IBM (you know with the big red satisfying power switch (thanks LGR!) and metal box you could open to "look under the hood" very loud and very basic IBM dos pc , was able to run the game but only in black and white (I was envious of my friends nice color widowss pc but really I didn't care because the game was still playable at home!) I was so excited.
    Between playing gorillas and sim city and eating grilled cheese samiches and mt dew soda the was a most memorable sleepover from my childhood. It's the reason I prefer to play the original sim city to this day. You should check out the gorilla game although I bet you already have a similar story too! Hahaaaa it is truly uncanny how often your stories and experiences seem to match up exactly with my own. Blows my mind. I wrote an entire book just now forgive me!
    I always look forward to your uploads. And the fact your willing to create hours at a time. A highlight of every week... Thumbs up for Tuesday night game night. It's comforting. So thanks again man, cheers!

    Apropos since LGR just did a retrospective on Sim City. I only tangentially experienced Sim City back in the early nineties but hearing both of your thoughts and experiences with the game (and the others you mentioned) really got the waves of nostalgia flowing over me.
    The 90's really was an almost magical decade to be into computers with the rapid advancement and new, exciting technology seemingly over every horizon.
    I'm still heavily into computers and PC gaming today, but I always feel so blase about "new" computer stuff since it really just feels like incremental upgrades vs the quantum leaps that felt like they were happening monthly in the nineties.

    Thanks for sharing your early PC experiences! I got started a bit later - my dad had a monochrome PC from 1984 that was probably a 80286 but I didn't really use it. We got a 486 in summer 1993 and that really kicked things off.
    I played a whole lot of Simcity along with other games my dad gave me. He actually got a collection of games with the computer he had at work including Ultima VI, Wing Commander, Monkey Island, and Loom. Those games along with Rogue were really the foundation of my PC gaming experience. Man, so much fun...

    I had a couple friends who had PC's (I think they had 386 SX computers, and cousins who had the latest Macintosh/Apple computers. I remember I spent a years worth of paychecks working at McDonalds buying my first computer, and my computer teacher at school sold me SimCity (the one you held up) for I want to say $5. Man I loved Sim City, but I gotta be honest... as soon as I played Sim City on the SNES I could never go back to it. I have to say, the SNES version of Sim City is my favorite Sim anything game of all time. I remember I would jack up the taxes, then go to work for 6 hours, come back and I would either have a boatload of cash, or my entire city would be burnt down from a plane crash.

    Ha Boots! I feel like we used to loiter all the same stores 😅. Boots, Best, Monkey Wards and Circuit City. I was a little farther south on the corridor than you so we also got Gemco and Manchester. Riding bikes around feels like a thing from our generation. I also played a lot of SimCity on my ancient Epson 8088-based machine. I'm amazed SimCity ran on those old CPUs. I must have had the second DOS release as I barely remember the copy protection and I would have remembered that dark card. I never saw a red card like that until Civilization a few years later. I figure piracy was less of an issue for a second run since they sold so many copies already. I printed out my cities as well, but I recall being able to print it zoomed out so everything was made of small tiles on one sheet. SimCity was a great game to have at the time and with such low minimum requirements. It had so much variety and killed a lot of time in an enjoyable way.
    By coincidence, I just watched Lazy Game Reviews' video on SimCity last night, so I knew a lot of the details of the game here, like that specific sound card. No problem for me to hear it all again.

    I was introduced to MUDs by a co-worker in 2003 (pretty late). I remember it being fun drawing out maps. I think it was Realm of Chaos or something similar based on Dungeons and Dragons. It would have been pretty cool to know of them in the early 90's. But, I was focused on the Genesis.

      Back then the Boots Camera was between what was the Tower Records and the Copeland's Sports on Blackstone between Barstow and Bullard (which itself was next to the old Toys R Us), across the street from the Bob's Big Boy. No and no. You still there?

    • @alunaticbastard
      @alunaticbastard 5 років тому

      @@CGQPlus ah yes that was after they moved from fig garden. I do remember that also. Behind Bob's big boy was Best and Montgomery Wards. It's crazy that none of that exists anymore. All the major stores that were in the area right there have long gone out of business.
      My wife quickly corrected me last night about the time frame and the location. She worked right there at Copelands when she was younger. I also lived "nice neighborhood adjacent", but down past Christmas 🌲 Lane over closer to Manchester Mall. Which I'm sure you guys road your bikes too also! It's a small world and this takes me back.
      This is by far the best video series on UA-cam. Even if it's for sentimental reasons, it doesn't make it any less true. And yes, I am still here. I moved away for a few years. But fate brought me back and it looks like I will be here for quite some time.

    • @CGQPlus
      @CGQPlus  5 років тому

      We used to shop at both Best and Montgomery Wards. The Wards had turned into a Target, and the Best into a Burlington Coat Factory, but I don't know what either one is anymore. Yeah, I used to go to Manchester all the time. That was actually my mall-of-choice as a kid. And I know what you're talking about. There are a lot of nice older neighborhoods around there, but you aren't too far from some that aren't. Next time I'm visiting home, we should go get a coffee or something.

      Thanks
      Also, the target is still there and just got a recent remodel (as did most targets in town here). And I haven't paid attention to the old best building in so long I could say for sure what it is anymore.
      I grew up in the neighborhood across Blackstone from Manchester. We lived at that mall for most summers when school was out. I watched that mall go from greatness to so empty they had to rent space to the state and county. Now they are remodeling and reinventing it again to attract new customers and businesses. It's crazy to think back over the years how much everything has changed around here.

    • @CGQPlus
      @CGQPlus  5 років тому +2

      Well, pretty much any time I've ever talked about "the mall" on this show, I'm talking about Manchester. That's where I interviewed for the Radio Shack job, and I bought my Playstation at the Sears there. They had a great food court, and a nice arcade, along with Kay-Bee, Radio Shack, Waldenbooks, etc.
